Merciful God,
we confess that we have not given ourselves
to the service of your kingdom.
You have called us to bear witness to the Gospel
by sharing the good news of Christ
and by serving those in need;
yet we have been afraid
to tell your good news
to a world that needs to hear it.
We have been more concerned with
preserving our own welfare
than with serving those who are truly needy.
Forgive our fear and selfishness
and help us by your Spirit
to give ourselves unreservedly to your holy service
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

coherent pattern: approximately
every five centuries, there is a shift
in the life cycle of faith:
 900 BCE: Establishment of
Monarchy under King David
 400 BCE: Babylonian captivity
and the writing of the Old
Testament
 70-130 CE: Birth of Christianity
 600 CE: Gregory I and
establishment of monasticism
 1054 CE: The Great Schism,
splitting the Roman church and
the Greek church
 1517 CE: The Great Reformation
 2014 CE: The church reformed
and reforming

The Reformation brought radical
change to church design. In
England, stone altars were removed
and replaced by a single wood
table. The crucifix was replaced by
an empty cross, and the Rood
screen, which separated the nave
and congregation from the chancel
and clergy, was often replaced with
a chancel rail. As the sermon
became the central act in the church
service, church design focused on
enabling all to hear and see the
minister. These influences are
visible in the White Memorial
sanctuary today.

We believe in one God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, so we firmly believe that
from the beginning there has been, now is, and to the end of the world shall be,
one Kirk, that is to say, one company and multitude of people chosen by God,
who rightly worship and embrace God by true faith in Jesus Christ, who is the
only Head of the Kirk, even as it is the body and spouse of Christ Jesus.
This Kirk is catholic, that is, universal, because it contains the chosen of all ages,
of all realms, nations, and tongues, be they of the Jews or be they of the Gentiles,
who have communion and society with God the Father, and with God’s Son,
Christ Jesus, through the sanctification of his Holy Spirit.

Old Norse. In 1560, the Scottish
Parliament, having declared
Scotland a Protestant nation,
asked the clergy to frame a
confession of faith. Six ministers,
including John Knox, completed
their work in four days. As a
call to action in a turbulent time,
the Scots Confession reflects a
spirit of trust and a commitment to
the God whose miraculous
deliverance the Scots had
experienced firsthand.
