Myrtle Beach (3-4 p.m.).
The Myrtle Beach Seniors Advisory Committee, of which AARP is a member, in conjunction with the Myrtle
Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, developed this piece especially for seniors to gauge what activities they
enjoy and to learn how better to serve the senior audience. The survey will be available through January 31 so as
to include the input of snowbirds, and afterwards results will be compiled which will be shared when released.
Visit www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com<http://www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com> for a link, or go directly to the survey at

Book Signing: Ron Rash (Something Rich and Strange) and Randall Wilhelm (The Ron Rash Reader) at Litchfield
Books (Fresh Market Commons in Pawleys Island). From the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling awardwinning author of Serena and The Cove, 30 of his finest short stories, collected in one volume. No one captures
the complexities of Appalachia – a rugged, brutal landscape of exquisite beauty – as evocatively and indelibly as
author and poet Ron Rash. Winner of the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, two O Henry prizes,
and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, Rash brilliantly illuminates the tensions between the traditional and
the modern, the old and new south, tenderness and violence, man and nature. Though the focus is regional, the
themes of Rash's work are universal, striking an emotional chord that resonates deep within each of our lives.
The Ron Rash Reader, edited by Randall Wilhelm, is a collection of essential works that covers the full range of
Rash's career to date, arranged chronologically and by genre. The collection of more than 60 of Rash's writings
demonstrates his remarkable breadth and vitality—from short stories and verse to novel excerpts and
nonfiction—comprising a best-of volume for new readers and established aficionados alike. Wilhelm's
introduction offers a biographical and critical guide to Rash's work as well as insightful discussion of the writer’s
most crucial themes and techniques, including his use of traditional and nontraditional poetic and literary forms;
of different narrative strategies, story forms, and character voices; and of landscape and historic settings.

their rebellion against the war and their conservative parents and society. Ultimately Claude must decide

Book Signing: Margaret Bradham Thornton (Charleston) at Litchfield Books (Fresh Market Commons in Pawleys
Island). A gifted writer makes her fiction debut with this lyrical and haunting story of missed chances and
enduring love, set against the backdrop of high society Charleston, which probes the eternal question: can we
ever truly go home again? When Eliza Poinsett, who returns to her childhood home after 10 years away, weaves
a poignant tale of lost love, the ephemeral notion of home, and our relationship with the people and places that
influence us the most. Thornton is the editor of Tennessee Williams’ Notebooks, for which she received the
Bronze ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award for Autobiography/Memoir. Friday, 2 p.m., 843-237-8138.
A Lowcountry Evening at Sunnyside – Gala & Wine Tasting. Murrells Inlet 2020 proudly presents its annual

Sunnyside home built circa 1850 by planter Jacob Motte Alston. The one-and-a-half story Greek revival style
house, which is constructed of heart pine with beaded cypress weatherboards, an oval mahogany flying
staircase, and large columns on the front, will be open for viewing. Heavy hors d’oeuvres and a variety of
desserts will be available for tasting, as well as an open bar and an assortment of fine wines and traditional
cocktails. “Band on Fire” provides plenty of music for dancing! The silent auction will feature an exciting array of
local artwork, trips, catered parties and much more. Attire is Lowcountry Casual. The event is rain or shine.
Proceeds benefit Murrells Inlet 2020, a 501c3 community revitalization organization dedicated to making the
Inlet a nice place to live, work and visit. Friday, $125 per person, 843-357-2007 to purchase tickets or online
