MASSES
November 9, 2014
Today, we have our second round of parish assemblies following each
Mass. The purpose of today’s assemblies is to seek your approval of the
parish mission statement and goals, which the pastoral council drafted
since the time of our first parish assemblies on September 13 and 14. We
also hope to spend some time with you today brainstorming ideas on
how we can achieve our goals. Each assembly will take an hour. You are
cordially invited to attend one of them, even if you did not sign up to
do so on Goal Sign-up Sunday. To the degree that parishioners own the
pastoral plan and help to put it into action is to the degree that it will
help us grow as a parish and become more active in our faith. I hope
we can count on your participation—if not in attending one of today’s
assemblies, then in helping implement the plan later on.
After today’s assemblies, the pastoral council will meet to ponder the
ideas from the weekend and turn some of them into objectives, which
will help us achieve our goals. The council hopes to release to the parish
the entire pastoral plan—together with its mission statement, goals, and
objectives—by the end of January. Implementation will then begin at that
time and is expected to take five years to carry out.
Again, I hope to see you at an assembly today. May God bless you, and
please continue praying for the success of our pastoral planning process.

Reflection on the Sunday Scriptures
“Omnium Urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput.” That is the inscription
high over the doorway of the main entrance of the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
For all of you Latinists the translation should be easy: “Mother and Head of all
the churches of the city and of the world”. That is quite a title for a Church, even
for a Basilica, and in such a title we find the meaning for the celebration of the
Feast of this day “The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica”. It is one of the FOUR
Basilicas (a word from the Greek “basileos” meaning king) in Rome, the others
being St. Peter, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary
Major). Because of those Latin words this feast day is celebrated on this day
because November 9, in 324, this first Christian Basilica was dedicated. First it
was dedicated to St. John the Baptist and then later to St. John the Evangelist.
Now the large new neoclassic temple is dedicated to Christ the Redeemer of
the World.
Its name comes from the family that owned the Palace of the Laterani Family and who donated the land next to the palace. The Popes for centuries lived
in that donated Palace adjoining the church until the 14th century. In such a
place many Ecumenical Councils were held and the church was and still is
“The Pope’s Cathedral”, meaning where his CATHEDRA or Chair is, as the
successor of St. Peter. You may remember how Pope Francis, after his election
as Pope went to St. John Lateran to take possession of Cathedra, HIS CHAIR,
symbol of his authority to teach, without error, in matters of Faith and Morals.
Throughout human history every culture has designated certain sites to be
respected and revered because those special places mark a special religious experience. Rome for us has many such places: the tomb of St. Peter, the house of
Paul’s arrest, the martyrs’ places of their deaths, the Catacombs. Many, indeed.
But Emperor Constantine marked a new beginning. In the Palace of the Laterani that he occupied, there is a large baptismal font that no doubt many of you
have seen where he was baptized a Christian. It is there that a new beginning
of the Church took place, no longer under the darkness of the catacombs and
where the Popes, the Ecumenical Councils, the Tradition continued.
But before we get all tangled up in these necessary historical externals, let
us remember that WE ARE A LIVING CHURCH, because as sacred as a building is, the people who fill it and what they do there, reminds us of our sacredness, created by God and recreated in Baptism. By it, “we become holy temples of
the Spirit” (I Cor. 3: 16). As St. Paul reminds his beloved community in Corinth,
we are each being formed into a dwelling place for God on earth. Each one of us, indeed, is then a temple of God’s Spirit.
Maybe, it is time to make an inventory and clean house as Jesus did in
this Sunday’s Gospel (John 2: 13-22) and allow the Divine Guest to make our
dwelling suitable for the sacred bearers we are called to be. We who believe in
Jesus are responsible to be holy places where others will find God. But we are
also Church, a collective witness of integrity, justice, mercy, and love to all the
world. We are a voice that speaks out for what is right, defends the dignity
of the poor and cares for them, as the face of the broken Christ, and prays for
God’s guidance for us all.
Not bad for anyone associated with these concepts. No matter if it is a
magnificent temple or a lowly hall where the mysteries of God are reenacted
and the Sacraments are celebrated in order to make people HOLY. That is the
best temple.

Centennial Campaign
We began renovations to the sacristy
and candle room. This project should
last 3-4 months and will bring needed modernizations to these areas. We
hope to begin renovation of the church
during Lent of 2015 so we can worship
in a newly renovated church in time for
Easter. If we are unable to begin in Lent
2015, work is likely to begin Lent 2016.
All the centennial campaign pledges
have been made. So many have responded generously and we thank you
for your faith and suppport in the projects. This is absolutely wonderful, and
your pledge payments are both appreciated and critical to getting the project
done. Thank you all for your generosity towards this campaign.

peace is the foundation of life. Grant them the peace
and stability that will enable them to live with each
other without fear and anxiety and with dignity and joy.
