Immigrants entering the U.S.
illegally are increasingly making
states along the East Coast their
home, and New Jersey had the
biggest gain, jumping 75,000 to
524,000 as immigrants from
India and Ecuador flooded the
state, according to a report
released Tuesday by the Pew
Research Center.
New Jersey, Florida and
Pennsylvania were among seven
states to register gains in
unauthorized immigrants from
2009 to 2012, even as the total
number of immigrants here in
the U.S. unlawfully was unchanged at 11.2 million, according to the Pew Center.
It was followed by Florida,
increasing 50,000 to 925,000.
Pennsylvania was third, rising
30,000 to 170,000. It saw
increases from several regions
including Honduras, India and
the Dominican Republic, many
of whom moved into the rapidly
diversifying southeastern part of
the state.
Other states with increases
were Maryland, Virginia, Idaho
and Nebraska.
In the early to mid-2000s,
migrants primarily from Mexico
drove much of the nation’s illegal
immigration into Western
states. Now, 14 states including
Arizona, California, Colorado,
Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon
are seeing declines.
Mexicans still make up the
bulk of immigrants here illegally
— about 52 percent, down from
56 percent in 2009 — but
increasingly other countries,
particularly from Central
America, Asia and the Caribbean, are contributing to the
mix.
The report comes as President
Obama seeks to move forward
with executive actions that could
potentially shield about 5
million immigrants here illegally
from deportation. Congressional

Collectors on the state’s two
biggest toll roads had their jobs
spared after New Jersey Turnpike
Authority officials said Tuesday
they will not privatize the
positions.
Collectors have their supervisors to thanks for their new job
security.
Concessions agreed to by two
unions presenting Turnpike and
Garden State Parkway toll
supervisors provided enough
savings so that officials did not
have to ask toll collectors for a
second round of pay cuts, Joseph
Mrozek, the authority’s executive
director, said.
“Now we can breathe a sigh of
relief,” said Kevin McCarthy,
president of Local 194, International Federation of Professional
and Technical Engineers AFLCIO, which represents 1,000 toll
collectors, clerks, maintenance
and trade workers on the Turnpike. “It’s brighter for them now
than it was last year at this time.”
Toll collectors on both roads
saved their jobs from a similar
privatization threat in April 2011,
when they agreed to a contract
that cut wages and provided an

JERUSALEM — Israel
promised harsh retaliation
Tuesday for a Palestinian
attack that killed five people
and left blood-smeared prayer
books and shawls on the floor
of a synagogue in Jerusalem
— an assault that sharply
escalated tensions that were
already high after weeks of
religious violence.
The attack during morning
prayers in the west Jerusalem
neighborhood of Har Nof was
carried out by two Palestinian
cousins wielding meat cleavers,
knives and a handgun. They
were shot to death by police
after the deadliest assault in
the holy city since 2008.
Four of the dead were rabbis
and one was a police officer
who died of his wounds hours
after the attack. Three of the
rabbis were born in the United
States and the fourth was born
in England, although all held
dual Israeli citizenship. Five
others were wounded.
Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas condemned
the attack, the first time he has
done so in the wave of deadly
violence against Israelis. But he
also called for an end to Israeli
“provocations” surrounding
Jerusalem’s shrines that are
sacred to Muslims and Jews
alike.
President Barack Obama
called the attack “horrific” and
