This is the final RJ Review for 2014 – it’s hard to
believe!
A small number of recent successful School events
are briefly noted: Orientation Day for Year 7 went
very smoothly; Peripatetic Concerts, involving well
over 60 students were fantastic, providing lovely
entertainment for the large audiences and great
encouragement for the students, a number of whom
performed ‘on stage’ for the first time; Year 12 Formal
was a splendidly enjoyable occasion celebrating
significant memories and allowing for an important
‘send-off ’.
I commend for your attention a number of upcoming
events: Orientation Days for Kindergarten – thank
you in advance to parents who will assist with Uniform
sales and large morning tea; RJ Bike Challenge for
RJ students and families this Saturday morning - a
tremendous time of activity and interaction; Year 6
Graduation Ceremony; Duke of Edinburgh Hikes
(Bronze and Silver Awards) for students/staff trekking
through the Blue Mountains National Park; Ensemble
Concerts involving instrumentalists and bands.
Student Reports will be distributed at the conclusion
of our Presentation Nights, along with a family copy
of the year’s Footprints magazine, a wonderful RJ
publication of 2014 highlights. The comprehensive
General Information Letter, including essential
details for next year, will be placed on the School
website on Friday 5 December.
Our Presentation Nights are always outstanding
celebrations of the year together and of God’s
amazing goodness and faithfulness! We anticipate the
attendance of all students.
“Sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done
marvelous things; He has made His salvation known
and revealed His righteousness to all people.”
(Psalm 98:1-2)
Best wishes

SEGMENTS
What does the future hold? Last Thursday evening we
celebrated the final event for students in Year 12, 2014
with their families at the Colebee Centre. The girls were
elegantly dressed in classic style, and the boys looked like
the young men they were becoming, in classy suits and ties
that managed to stay tied up during the night! Nearly all
the students I spoke with had “a plan” – working for a few
years, enrolling at university, continuing a TAFE course…
very few were still undecided. I thought about them when
I looked at the new students who came for the Year 7
Orientation two weeks ago. These young people will finish
their formal schooling in 2020. By that stage there will be
a new Australian Curriculum for Stage 6, the School will
have celebrated 20 years of operation, I will be…(let’s not
go there!).
God knows the plans he has for us – and we do not say
those words lightly. Gardening is one of my great pleasures,
and I look at the delicate formation of petals and the design
of flowers and am constantly amazed that such beauty
comes from so tiny a seed. Jesus used the flowers of the
field to explain how God cares even more for his ultimate
creation – mankind. He knows our needs before we even
think or ask – my response is to trust him. It’s that simple.
I don’t know what the future holds, but I know and trust
God, who does. This doesn’t mean we don’t do anything!
The Bible gives us great examples and teaching about how
we should live with one another and what sort of people
Page 5 - 18 November 2014
God wants us to be. But ultimately I serve God, not man,
and I rejoice in His blessings.
So, what does the future hold? In the short-term, we are
heading towards holidays and Christmas celebrations. I
pray that it will be a time of great joy for you all – and I
have some words of advice for this time:
1. Think of people other than yourself – it’s too easy to get
caught up in the “gimme” of Christmas.
2. Go and spend time with someone you don’t normally
spend time with – sadly, the people we start the year with
are not always there at the end of the year.
3. Be inclusive of others, not exclusive. Jesus died for the
sins of the whole world, not just someone else’s!
4. Find a church service at Christmas and go along, even if
you’ve never been before. The sky won’t fall in.
5. Rejoice! As the angels proclaimed, “Do not be afraid.
I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the
people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born
to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11
I’ll look forward to seeing everyone at Presentation Night,
and I’m excited about what God has planned for RJ in the
future!

SPORTS SNAPSHOT
We are now more than half way through our last term of the
year, and are entering the final two weeks of sport for the
year. Our final week of sport will be Tuesday 25 November.
In the final week of School, sport is replaced by the End
of Year Swim Day, which will be held on Wednesday 3
December.
It has been a great year of sport and the students are to be
congratulated on their efforts in the great variety of sports
in which they have participated. I would also like to thank
the teachers who have been involved in sport during this
year, both in School Sport, Rep Sport and also coaching
Gala Day teams. Their efforts have been much appreciated.
It is important to finish the year well and I would like to
thank parents for their support in ensuring that their
children wear the correct Sport Uniform each week.
Page 6 - 18 November 2014
REP SPORTS
Our Rep Sports teams have completed four rounds of
the competition with all teams participating well in their
matches.
Last week, our Girls’ Softball team played Wycliffe in the
third of their matches. Last week, Wycliffe defeated our
girls in a closely fought game 8-5. All the girls played very
well and have improved in their skills from week to week.
In Touch Football, the teams have completed four games
in the competition. In their third game, RJ ‘A’s’ played
Lakes winning that game 8-4. The RJ B team played Mamre
‘B’ and were successful by winning 7-5. Last week, the A
team played Mamre, with Mamre winning 4-2 while the
B team won their match against Wycliffe ‘B’s by forfeit.
Teriro Makore, Sarah Hemmings and Alana Vaeila played
extremely well for the ‘A’ team.
In the final sport our 15 years Boys’ Cricket team have
played Penrith Christian School and Wycliffe. In the match
against Penrith, our boys played well but were defeated by
76-56. Last week, RJ played Wycliffe for the second time
and thanks to an excellent innings by Izaac Mateo, were
able to win the match by 54 to 45 runs.
Well done to all our Rep players and best wishes for the
next round of matches.
CSSA SOFTBALL GALA DAY
Last Wednesday, Amilda Kasper and Ayesha Lal attended
the CSSA Open Girls’ Softball Gala Day as part of the
Barbarians team (a composite team made up of girls from
various schools). Both of the girls had a most enjoyable
day with the Barbarians finishing runners-up which was a
great result. Following the final game, the CSSA Open Girls
Softball team was announced and Amilda was named as
one of the shadow reserves, which is a great achievement.
Well done Amilda and Ayesha on your efforts on the day.

OTHER SPORTS
One of the other sports that students at RJ excel at is
Equestrian events. Tamsen Horsnell, in Year 7, has been
competing in horse riding competitions for a number of
years and recently competed in the Zone 19 Championships
on her horse ‘Harry.’ Tamsen competed in a number of
events and was successful in winning the 13 - 17 years
Showjumping. Well done, Tamsen.
Thank you to students, parents and teachers for all
their hard work and support in making this year a most
successful one in Sport.
THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK
‘It is normal to enjoy praise and dislike criticism. True
character is when you prevent either from affecting you in
a negative matter.’

‘Unless you’re willing to have a go, fail miserably, and have
another go, success won’t happen.’

CHALLENGE
WESSTA TRIVIA CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS
Recently, six of our Year 8 students went to St Marys
Community Hall to participate in the WeSSTA Junior
Geography Trivia Challenge. This was the first time that RJ
had participated in this event.
The RJ team competed against 360 Year 8 students from
across Sydney, answering a range of Geography questions,
from naming sacred indigenous sites to identifying
locations from around the world by looking at a single
image.
Our students successfully defeated all the other teams on
the day, winning the Perpetual Shield. In between each
round, the students played a game of ‘True or False’ and
the winners could take home an iTunes gift card. Of the 15
iTunes gift cards on offer, the students from RJ took home
9. Congratulations!

Visual
ARTS
Year 9 Visual Arts have been exploring ‘still-life’ as subject
matter in class this term. A 'still life' is a specific style of
painting. Usually it is an arrangement of inanimate objects.
Traditionally flowers or kitchen utensils, but almost any
household objects were included and shown laid out on
a table. In recent weeks, we have studied Paul Cezanne’s
‘Apples and Oranges’ (c.1895-1990) which inspired some
small Body of Works. Have a look at some of the wonderful
artworks created by Year 9 students in Semester 2!

Year 10
SERVICE WEEK
Each year, students in Year 10 participate in Service
Week, where they volunteer and serve others in various
locations and activities. This year, Service Week will run
from Monday 24 November to Thursday 27 November.
At RJ, we are very keen to encourage the students to be
involved in activities that meet the needs of other people,
to go beyond what they would normally, to do something
for someone else with no thought of
reward for themselves. We know that
Jesus served us and God has blessed us
with so much. This is an opportunity to
be a blessing to others.
There are a variety of different
opportunities for the students to serve
others. These different activities are:
1. Packing the Operation Christmas
Child boxes at Samaritan’s Purse
2. Helping the teachers in the K-2
classrooms
3. Helping in the Library cataloguing books and sorting
shelves. – Mrs Shaw
4. Visiting the residents at the Southern Cross Village –
helping with exercise, craft activities, reading to visually
impaired residents
5. Helping at two local Preschools- St Mark’s Church and
Tregear Presbyterian Church
6. Preparing food boxes at the Tregear Presbyterian Church
Food Ministry
7. Serving at the Christ Mission Possible Centre – helping
distribute food to needy families
8. Make wooden toys for the Operation Christmas Child –
Mr Cohen and Mr Harrison
9. Helping sew clothes for children – Mrs Hamilton
There may be opportunities for the students to spend more
than one day at a particular venue, but that will depend on
the interest shown in that particular activity. Students will
have the opportunity to choose the majority of activities
in which they will be involved. However, there may be
occasions when they will be asked to go to a different
activity due to limited vacancies.
Students will come to School at the normal times and will
leave for their different activities after Home Group. The
students will return to School in time to catch their bus or
be collected. If students are going outside the School, they
will need to bring their own food and drink for the day.
Students will be advised as to whether School Uniform or
Page 10 - 18 November 2014
Sports Uniform should be worn for their activity.
We are looking forward to a week filled with many
opportunities for our students to serve others. If you have
any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at
School on 9677 2455 or by email – [email protected].

Stage 4
THANKYOU
I would just like to say thank you again
to the Stage 4 students and Home Group
teachers for their support of Samaritan’s
Purse and Operation Christmas Child.
We are expecting to send about 80 filled
shoeboxes approximately over $200. A
special thank you to those wonderful
Stage 5 students who, despite this being
a Stage 4 initiative, generously supplied
filled shoeboxes and donations.

Matters of
PRIMARY IMPORTANCE
As we head quickly towards the end of the School year, it is
great to look back on some of the highlights of 2014. Our
Primary Musical, ‘The Greatest Musical of All Time’ was
by far the biggest event that we have ever undertaken, but
what a joy it was to see our 24 actors develop and blossom
into stage performers and to have every single student in
Primary involved in a variety of colourful and engaging
Musical items. Excursions and incursions are always
highlights, with the Year 6 Canberra Trip, Year 5 Camp and
Year 4 Pyjamarama topping the list of memories that will
be treasured for many years to come. It has been wonderful
to see our students excel in both Sport and Music and to
welcome visitors to our School as we celebrate community
events, including: Grandparents and Grandfriends
Day, Bandage Bear Day, Primary Open Day, the RJ Bike
Challenge and the Primary Musical.
FAMILY BIKE CHALLENGE
The ‘Family Bike Challenge’ will be held this Saturday 22
November at Nurragingy Reserve commencing at 9am.
We had a fantastic day last year and are looking forward
to a wonderful day again this year. Students will need
a well-fitted bike helmet and bike to participate on the
day. Students should wear their House shirts to receive
extra House points. We look forward to seeing you at this
exciting event.
ASSEMBLY
During Assembly in Week 5, we stopped to remember
the many men and women who have served our country
in war and peace-keeping missions. Mr O’Hare was our
guest speaker, sharing the tragic story of his grandfather’s
wartime experience. Sadly, Mr O’Hare’s grandfather lost his
life in war. It was great to hear from our Intermediate Band,
who performed in this Assembly. Last week, 4J continued
our look at ‘Prophesies of the Saviour’. They presented Old
and New Testament prophesies that foretold the death and
resurrection of the Saviour. This week is our final Assembly
for 2014 with some special guest presenters. Next week the
Year 6 Graduation Assembly replaces the normal Assembly
schedule. Thank you to all the parents who have joined us
for Primary Assemblies throughout the year.
BAND CONCERT
The Band Concert will be held on Monday 1 December
from 1:50-3:00pm. This will be a great opportunity for our
students to perform for their families and to showcase their
musical achievements this year.
EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS
Kindergarten classes had a lot of fun last week with a
special visitor of the canine kind who helped them to learn
all about the responsible ownership of pets. Tomorrow,
Wednesday 19 November, Year 3 students will have an
excursion to Blacktown to learn more about the history
of the local area to complement their studies in Human
Society and Its Environment. Year 1 students have enjoyed
visits from the local Fire Brigade as they learn all about
transport and safety in their classroom learning.
KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION
Kindergarten Orientation Days will be held this week,
Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 November. We look
forward to welcoming our new Kindergarten children to
RJ on these special days, which always makes us stop and
reflect on just how much our current Kindergarten students
have grown and developed over such a short period of
time. We look forward to welcoming new families into our
RJ community on the Kindergarten Orientation mornings.

More Matters of
PRIMARY IMPORTANCE
LAST DAY FOR STUDENTS 2014
The last day of School for Primary students is Thursday 4
December. This is the day after the Primary Presentation
Night. Attendance for K-2 students is optional on this day.
PRIMARY MUFTI-DAY/PRESENTATION NIGHT
PREPARATION
In order for School Uniforms to be clean and wellorganised for Presentation Night, Primary students may
wear Christmas coloured mufti (red, green and white) on
Wednesday 4 December. Students must have closed shoes
and clothing suitable for School (i.e. no strappy tops, very
short shorts or inappropriate images or writing on t-shirts).
They are not to have any spray paint in hair. Christmas
mufti-day is a fun dress-up day for students to finish and
celebrate a very busy year.
PERIPATETIC CONCERTS
Peripatetic Concerts were held last week and it was, as
always, a joy to see just how much these students have
developed in their singing and playing skills. For some of
our younger students, the Peripatetic Concerts are their very
first concert; for others the Concerts are an opportunity to
highlight the many hours of rehearsal required to master
the skill of playing an instrument. Well done to all the
students who performed.
PRIMARY PRESENTATION NIGHT
Primary Presentation Night will be held on Wednesday
3 December in the Hall. This is a fantastic evening that
celebrates the achievements of Primary students throughout
2014 in a variety of areas, including performance, sporting,
Christian character and diligence to learning. Student
attendance is compulsory at Presentation Night so please
mark this important date in your calendar. Student Reports
will be presented at the conclusion of the evening. Student
Portfolios will be sent home on Tuesday 2 December with
students. There will be performances by Kindergarten, Year
3, self-nominated Year 5 students, RickyJ Singers, RickyJ
Dancers, RJ SingStars and RJ DanceStars, Primary Musical
Actors, Combined Band and Guitar Ensemble.
STUDENT FORUM
Thank you to the Years 4-6 students who represented
Primary this year in Student Forum. It has been great
working with the students and hearing the many ideas
suggested by classes. It has also been wonderful seeing
the student representatives grow in confidence as leaders
within the School.
SWIM SCHOOL
The last Swimming Lesson for 2014 will be next Monday
24 November. Parents are encouraged to continue to
develop safe water practices with their children as we enter
the warmer months and where safety in water activities
becomes so crucial for our young people. Little Fishes
and Emerton Leisure Centre would be happy to hear from
parents who would be interested in continuing lessons
independently for their children.
YEAR 6 GRADUATION
Year 6 Graduation will be held on Friday 28 November,
commencing at 9:00am. Parents should have received
an invitation to this special event. Please indicate your
attendance so Morning Tea can be adequately provided.
YEAR 7 ORIENTATION DAY
Year 6 students had an exciting morning last week as they left
the comfort of the Primary part of the School and ventured
into Secondary territory for their Year 7 Orientation Day.
Our Year 6 students have been a fantastic cohort of students
and have been excellent role models in Primary this year.
While we will miss seeing them each day, we wish them all
the best in their Secondary years of education.
As we move towards the Christmas holiday period, may I
wish all RJ families a safe and spirit-filled Christmas. To the
small number of students leaving RJ at the end of the year,
I pray that you will look back fondly on your time at RJ and
I wish you all the best for your future schooling.

PRIMARY SPORT
On Monday 3 November, the Years 5/6 Boys Basketball
Team travelled to Cambridge Park to participate in the
CSSA State Basketball Gala Day. The boys were handed
a tough draw coming up against teams from Northern
Beaches, Green Point and St George. They were able to
secure third place in their group which meant a playoff
for final standings against Covenant Christian School. The
boys wrapped this victory up (18-12) after withstanding a
furious late rally from the Covenant team to officially finish
9th overall. This was a pleasing result, placing the team just
outside the top half of the 16-team competition. Well done
to Jaedan Aldana, Juaquin Roque, Jesse Tima, Jack Bucco,
Isaac Papalii, Mark Paje, Andrew Martin and Gabriel Dela
Cruz.
Monday 10 November saw the Years 3/4 Boys Team at their
CSSA State Basketball Gala Day held at the same venue. The
team was drawn in Pool B against Wycliffe, Pacific Hills,
Oxford Falls, Belmont and Mt. Annan. The team, consisting
of Ethan Bides, Ephraim Papalii, Jericho San Jose, Antony
Butros, Mark Cavanagh, Vaka Taeiloa, Juan Fado and Ethan
Kerek played a tough opening game against Wycliffe. The
scoreline of 8-8 was the result of two free throws made
after the final siren. The boys then won against Mt Annan
8-2, Belmont 10-5, Oxford Falls 6-2 and Pacific Hills 9-7 to
finish 1st in their group based on a count-back of defensive
points allowed. This meant the team progressed to the Semi
Final where they went down to a well-drilled Rouse Hill
team 8-2. Based on the result of the other Semi Final, we
laid claim to an overall finishing position of 3rd. This is a
tremendous achievement most notably because this is the
first 3/4 Team RJ has entered at State level. Well done on a
terrific result boys!
Most of the boys have now discovered a new “favourite
sport”. I commend both teams on their fighting spirit – they
never gave up in any of their matches – and it was extremely
pleasing to watch their individual and team skills develop
throughout training sessions and the matches on the day.

Multicultural
FEAST
Year 2 enjoyed the influences of many cultures during
Week 6. We listened to talks from those who have lived
in Ethiopia, South Africa and the United Kingdom. This
stirred the excitement for the Multicultural Feast that
followed. Students researched, then made traditional
food either known to them from a culture they belonged
to, or one from somewhere in the world. There was a
smorgasbord of dishes that Year 2 adventurously tasted.
Students commented continually about how ‘yummy’ the
food was. Thank
you
to
those
amazing parents
who helped to
organise
their
child’s dishes to
make our feast
such a success.

Primary Chess
CHAMPIONSHIP
The RJ Primary Chess Championship has just been
completed for 2014. Over 30 students from Years 3 to 6
participated in the knock-out competition. The final was
a thrilling match between Daniel Moreno of Year 6 and
Matthew Martin of Year 5. After finishing 2nd in last year's
Championship, Matthew Martin fought hard against strong
competition from Daniel to win the competition.
Congratulations Matthew, and thank you to all who
participated and made it such an exciting event.

On 30 April 2002, the current Block C
was completed and officially opened.
By October that year, work was wellunderway at either end of the basketball
court in the foreground above, to
construct two buildings. These were
later joined together with the addition

P&F ASSOCIATION
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Well this has been a big year for the P&F. A Fete year is
always super busy and this year was no different. Not only
did we have the Fete but also Mothers/Father’s day stalls,
Year 7 and Kindergarten Orientations, Bike Challenge
morning tea, the regular meetings and of course the weekly
running of the Uniform Shop. Whilst it makes me tired
just thinking about it all, it is also encouraging to look back
and see the many different people that volunteered and
worked so hard so that all these things could happen and
run smoothly. Thank you to everyone who helped the P&F
this year, we are thankful for your help.
I would like to thank the P&F Executive for all of their
hard work. Thank you Trish (Vice President), Haryanty
(Treasurer), Denia ( Secretary), Valeska (Parent Rep), Vikki
(Uniform shop) and Chris (Fete Co-ordinator). I couldn’t
have asked for a better team to work with. Thank you for
the many hours you have put into P&F, for your efficiency
and for your desire to help our School community. Thank
you for your support, care and help.
Page 17 - 18 November 2014
Lastly let me wish you a safe and happy holiday with your
children (even though I can’t believe the end of the year
is here!). This Christmas, may you celebrate the baby
that was born in a manger who is my Saviour and yours,
Jesus Christ. May you seek to know him more over this
Christmas period and see the love, grace and change to
your life He will bring.

HELP WANTED
1) Kindergarten Orientations - the P & F needs parents/
friends to help run these events.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Annette
McKay, Kim Kasper and Anita Lanteri. Annette and Kim
are not only always there to offer extra assistance but have
also assisted in running the Uniform Shop weekly. Anita
has run Book Club at our School for a number of years.
She is unable to continue this next year so we are looking
for someone to take over this job, but thank Anita for
providing the opportunity for our families to buy books at
very reasonable prices and to get fantastic literature into
our homes. Thank you for all your work ladies.
If you’re able to help for an hour or 2 on the following days,
please let the Uniform Shop Co-ordinator know:
Kindy – November 19 (10.30am – 2.30pm)

Prayer
POINTS
PRAY:
• For the new 2015 staff that God has brought to our
School, that they may quickly feel at home here at RJ and
for their future teaching and pastoral care of students.
• For Year 12 students who have completed their HSC and
are now awaiting their results, that they may commence
purposeful post-School lives under God’s guidance.
• For the School Council members that faithfully serve RJ,
that they continue to make wise decisions across a wide
range of areas.
PRESENTATION EVENTS
AT RJAS
This is a reminder to all parents that end of year
Presentation Nights are compulsory for all students.
At the conclusion of each of the Presentation Nights
students are issued with their Semester 2 Reports. If any
student is unable to attend their appropriate Presentation
Night parents are asked to write to the Principal seeking
exemption for their child’s attendance with an explanation
as to why they are unable to attend.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
TOYS ‘N’ TUCKER
Each year Anglicare runs a ‘Toys ‘n’ Tucker’ Appeal to provide toys and
food for families in need at Christmas. Our School is supporting the
Appeal again this year and we would love to have donations of any of
the items listed below. Please don’t send in glass jars or anything fragile
or any chocolates. Also, please don’t wrap presents as they must be
unwrapped prior to distribution. This is a wonderful way to help those
in need - we can make a difference! Cash donations can also be made –
these can be left at the School Office.
For the Primary School, donations can be left in the basket at each
classroom. Secondary students can leave donations in the basket at
the School Office. The last day for donations to be received is Friday
21 November. Thank you for your support.
Gifts for children - toys, games, books and activity sets.
Gifts for teenagers - sporting gear, games, books and toiletry sets.
New clothes - t-shirts, shorts and caps for all ages.
Food - tinned ham, fish, vegetables, and fruit; Christmas cakes and puddings; pasta and rice; long-life milk.
Wrapping paper - so parents can enjoy the experience of wrapping gifts for their children.
