step further towards modernization to convert KatwaBalgona section of Howrah
Division of this Railway
from Narrow Gauge to Broad
Gauge. For gaug e conversion work the KatwaBalgona section will be
closed from December 1,
2014 and four pairs of
Katwa-Balgona locals presently plying on this Narrow
Gauge Section will remain
cancelled from December 1,
2014 till further advice.

today said. Bihar Governor Dr D Y Patil completes his tenure on November 26. “The President of India has been
pleased to appoint Shri
Keshari Nath Tripathi,
Governor of West Bengal,
to discharge the functions of the Gover nor of
Bihar, in addition to his
own duties,” a communique from the Rashtrapati
Bhavan said. It said that
Tripathi would be in
charge of Bihar until
regular arrangements for
the office of the Governor
of that state is made.

ordered an enquiry into the
alleged incident of ragging
at Barhampur Blind School.
“De puty Commissioner,
Nagaon, P Ashok Babu has
asked
ADC
Amitabh
Rajkhowa to probe the incident that took place at
Barhampur Blind School recently following directive
from the Chief Minister today,” an official release said.
The Deputy Commissioner said the parents of a
boy alleged that their son
had left the school after he
was subjected to ragging.
“The Deputy Commissioner
has
directed
ADC
R ajkhowa to investigate
into the incident and submit
a report within a week,” the
release said.
Babu has also asked the
Circle Officer to meet the
Principal of the blind
school to get first-hand information about the incident,

Youth Injured in bear attack
GANGTOK, NOV 23/-/Wild bears create havoc in villag es across Sikkim
with the advent of the winter season
and reports of people getting attacked
and injured by them is common during the season.
In one of the first incident this
winter, 21-year old youth Vishal
Tamang from Khamdong-Thangsing in
East Sikkim was attacked by a wild
bear a day ago, injuring him critically.
He has sustained deep cuts in his face,
head and hand and is currently getting
treated at the STNM Hospital in
Gangtok.
Sources said Vishal was attacked
by the wild bear when he was working
near the forest area of his village. The
victim’s family informed the state forest department is supporting his treat-
ment and have been continuously taking updates on his improvement. Notably, this is not the first attack in the village this year.
Recently, two people were injured
in two separate bear attacks in the
area. Forest department personnel
have visited the site and efforts are on
to keep the wild bears away from populated areas. HS

youth by two others in the
state capital. “ADGP (law
and order) RM Singh will
enquire into the case of
assault of a youth by some
miscreants yesterday at
Sadilapur of Garigaon
area on the outskirts of
Guwahati city,” an official
release said. Singh will enquire into the case and
submit a report to the
Home and Political Department. When contacted, Guwahati Senior
Superintendent of Police
Anand Prakash Tiwari
told PTI that it was a fight
between three teenaged
youths of a locality over a
trivial issue. “Some antisocial elements tried to
give it a communal colour
as the two parties were
from different communities. However, police immediately took control of
the situation and it is
peaceful now,” he added.
Tiwari said citizen committees and village defence parties are working
in close tandem to restore
complete normalcy in the
area. Three youths have
been rounded up and they
are being interrogated, he
added.
Meanwhile,
Gauhati Medical College
and Hospital superintendent Ramen Talukdar said
the youth from Sipajhar
who sustained minor

Campaigning for the first phase of polling on Tuesday for 15 assembly seats in
Jammu and Kashmir and 13 Maoist-hit
constituencies in Jharkhand ended today, with BJP hoping to continue its
winning streak in the multi-cornered
contests riding on the ‘Modi wave’. 123
candidates are in the fray in the first leg
of the five-stage election in Jammu and
Kashmir, where Chief Minister Omar
Abdullah is leading the ruling National
Conference against main opposition
PDP, BJP and Congress, with which the
NC had snapped ties ahead of polls. The
fate of 199 candidates will be decided
in this phase in Jharkhand which has
an 81-member Assembly with ruling
JMM, Congress-RJD combine, BJPAJSU, JVM-P, RJD, JD(U), CPI, CPM,
CPI(ML-Liberation) and other regional
parties in the contest.
The 15 J-K assembly segments going to polls on November 25 are spread
across seven districts of Bandipora and
Ganderbal in Kashmir Valley, Kargil
and Leh of Ladakh region and Kishtwar,
Doda and Ramban of Jammu region.
While eight seats were held by National
Conference, PDP had one and the Congress had six.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP
chief Amit Shah and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh were among the star
campaigners for BJP in Jammu and
Kashmir where the first phase of elections has been by and large peaceful.
Omar has voiced confidence of retaining power, noting that militancy is “at
the lowest” in last six years and his government has taken various pro-development initiatives in its tenure.

Panic grips NJP after IOC fire scare
SILIGURI, NOV 23/-/ A fire on a dry ground adjacent to
an Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) depot located close to New
Jalpaiguri Platform this morning created panic in the area.
The closeness to the oil depot increased tension among the
people and started to vacate the area. However, two fire engines based in NJP responded to the fire call and manage
to take control of the situation. It took them around an hour
the put out the fire. Fire brigade officials believed the fire
could have spread due to a lit cigarette bud. Due to the dry
vegetation in the ground the fire spread quickly, but the
prompt response from the fire department averted a major
accident. No one was said to be injured in the fire. HS
Man arrested with drugs
SILIGURI, NOV 23/-/ New Jalpaiguri Platform outpost
police on Sunday arrested a youth in possession of large
quantity of hashish or charas from South Colony area. The
police have identified the arrested person as Prakash Shah
from Bulbulchandi in Malda District. Police sources said
the charas seized from Shah is worth around Rs.2lakh. Acting on a tip-off the NJP outpost personnel conducted a secret operation and arrested the accused from South Colony
area. Upon checking his belongings they found the drugs
hidden in his bag. Preliminary interrogation revealed that
Shah had come from Malda to sell the drugs. He was presented before the Jalpaiguri District Court and sent to additional police remand. HS

elections. “Chunav mein

told JD(U) workers at a public meeting in Bihar’s Supaul
district. Kumar said that he
cared two hoots about consequence for breaking alliance
with the BJP as for him principles mattered more than
running a coalition government with the saffron party

SHILLONG, NOV 23/—/A new Meghalaya Assembly
building will come up in New Shillong Township and
80 acres of land has been identified for the purpose,
Speaker Abu Taher Mondal has said. “We have finalised the land for the construction of the new Assembly building at the New Shillong Township at a meeting of a High Power Committee of the Meghalaya Assembly on Friday,” Mondal said yesterday. “Now, we’ll
start the process of its execution in different stages
until the new Assembly building gets its desired shape
within a specific time,” he said. Narrating how different proposals for a new building did not materialise
since 2004, the Speaker said “this time we hope our decision will fructify since as this is a government land
and all new institutional and organisational buildings are coming up in the area.” He said Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had agreed to arrange the fund required for the project. According to the Speaker, the
functioning of the Assembly is badly hit as the administrative headquarter in Police Bazaar area is not sufficient, while the chamber is at another location in
Rilbong. The old British era Assembly building in the
capital was badly damaged in a fire in 2001 and parts
of the remaining building houses only the Assembly
secretariat. Other functions are held in different
places.
Old man stung to
death by bees
AIZAWL, NOV 23/-/An 80-year-old man died after he
was stung by a swarm of bees in a forest near
Khawzawl village in Mizoram, police officials said today. The victim, identified as Lalzuia was attacked by
the bees when he was clearing an area in the jungle for
‘jhum’ cultivation on Friday, they said. Writhing in
pain Lalzuia could manage to reach the main road by
crawling where he was found by some passers-by. He
was taken to Khawzawl rural hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, they said. (PTI)
