A message from the Launch/Haul Director
Winter storage thoughts of interest that I saw in an RCR newsletter as well as note or two from
myself.
1. Most steel cradles need small drainage holes in the bottom of the tubes holding the boat
up. Water gets into these tubes, freezes and expands the pipes and can even split them. Tell-tale
signs of this are peeling paint and excessive rust. The water will start to rust the tube from the inside
out. Wooden cradles need to be inspected for rotting wood and loose fasteners. Inspection of the
cradle is just as important as service on the boat.
2. You need to secure your halyards for the winter. If they run up alongside the mast, they will bang
against the mast all winter long and chafe on the spreaders. This goes for messenger lines as well.
Tie them off either aft or forward of the mast. We also take the jib or spin halyard and wrap it around
the forestay or furler. This will create a disruption in the airflow and stop the pumping of the
forestay. This is the same design technique they use on automobile antennas. Also, it is a good
idea to use a wrench to tighten shackles. Better yet, wrap some rigging tape around them for better
security. If these come undone, they tend to wrap themselves around your neighbors rigging which
could have catastrophic results come spring launch.
3. Do not leave your ladders up against your boat when you are not at the boat. This invites
unwanted visitors, and when (not if) we have heavy winds, the ladder could cause damage to the
side of your boat or your neighbors. Best to stow them on the inside of the cradle.
4. Lock your ladders up, an unlocked ladder will be confiscated and held hostage.
5. Mark your mast on the rack with your name or boat name.

TRIM THE TREE
Come and join us on Friday, Dec. 5th to
trim the GYC Christmas Tree.
7 PM
Bring something yummy to share, we’ll get down the
ornaments and trim with a glass of wine in hand.
We’ll light the fireplace and listen to the sound of
Xmas carols playing and sing a few. Only the tree
and mantle will be decorated this year. Plus we have
nice folks who have volunteered to take them down!
Just a reminder!!!
Club members may reserve the main room of the clubhouse for private functions during the months of
November through April. You are reminded that while the reserving members are allowed exclusive
use of the main room for their function, they are required to share other rooms of the clubhouse with
the rest of the membership. Common courtesy prevails, however, and other members are encouraged
to allow the reserving members as much privacy as possible. Call Joyce Peters at 865-6935 for
reservations.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY

Christmas party. Enjoy watching them visit with Mr. and Mrs.
Santa Claus and receiving a gift.
Santa’s Elves will help them make something at the craft table
