Best Wishes to All for a Healthy, Happy and Safe Winter Message from the President It is a sad time for the OLBA with the passing of Bob O’Neil. Bob put many hours and years into supporting this organization. Bob O’Neil was a member of the OLBA Board (working as our Executive Director) for 16 years. We thank him for his dedication to bowls. I hope all members will take a minute to think of Bob and his wife Pam, whom he leaves behind. At the Fall Meeting our membership voted to change how many individuals we can have on the Board – now with a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 Board members. I would like to thank those Board members who are no longer on the Board but who served our Board over the last several years: Edith Pedden, Andy Caldwell, Lenore Roach and Peter Clarke. I would also like to thank Elaine Houtby (Past President) for giving us so much of her time over the last 8 years. A new Board was elected at the AGM in Woodstock. We have 8 returning Board members and 4 new individuals joining the Board. I believe this is an enthusiastic group of people who will do a wonderful job for the organization. We now have several younger members on the Board who are not only excited about working with the Juniors but have other great thoughts and ideas. We must remember that we are not only here to work with the Juniors and the competitive bowlers but we are also here to help the vast number of bowlers who are called the silent majority - the everyday bowlers, who are the backbone of the OLBA. I am extremely happy with the new Board. We recently had our first meeting to elect our Executive. We also set up our Committees for 2015 and delegated Directors to each District (see below). It is my hope to visit clubs celebrating special occasions over the next two years. Please do not hesitate to call if you would like me to attend an event at your club. Changes in OLBA Insurance ! ! ! E-Bulletin -- Special Issue Within the next week, a special issue of the E-Bulletin will be prepared to inform members of changes to OLBA insurance. Please check the OLBA web site regularly for this update. The changes deal with the following areas: Waivers Certificates Social Members Special Events Directors and Officers Insurance E-Bulletin - October/November 2014 3 Championship Committee Our 2014 Provincial host clubs were Heritage, Pickering, Willowdale, Belleville, Kingston, Port Credit and Sarnia. Kingston actually hosted two different events – the Seniors and Juniors. Willowdale hosted the Indoor Qualifier in September. Thank you to each club for a job well done! We have chosen our Provincial host clubs for 2015: Windsor (Fours – June 6/7), Pickering (Pairs – June 20/21), Galetta (Men’s Triples - July 11/12), Smiths Falls (Women’s Triples - July 11/12), Kingston (Seniors – August 4/5), Midland (Mixed Pairs – August 8/9) Woodstock (Singles – September 5/6) and Sarnia (Novice – September 12/13). Lindsay will be hosting the Provincial Juniors. Willowdale Lawn Bowling Club will host the Canadian ‘Major’ Championships in August. Regarding the 2015 Canadian Singles Championships, Ontario was first approached to host the 2015 Canadian Singles Championships at the Bowls Canada meeting in Winnipeg on August 17th. At that point, our Province was still looking for a venue for the 2015 Canadian ‘Majors’ and that was our first priority. Apparently there are comments floating around that Ontario backed out of the 2015 Canadian Singles. Not true. We never agreed to do it. We did say, however, that once we secured a venue for the ‘Majors’, we would look into possible venues for the Singles. We did not receive confirmation that Willowdale would host the ‘Majors’ until October 8th. At that point, we began to go over the possibilities of hosting the Canadian Singles, as well, in 2015. We were all in agreement that we would need at least 4 greens – which means 2 two-green clubs or a combination of two-green and one-green clubs. We are already using 9 clubs for our Provincial Championships in 2015 and we’re hosting the Canadian ‘Majors’ – which is a weeklong event. Once we take out the clubs we’re already using, we don’t have four quality greens in close proximity to each other. Every year we are continually searching for and asking different clubs if they would be willing to host these kinds of events. Most are not interested. We also had to look at the fact that these clubs would have to be willing to tie up their greens (and volunteers) for a week. It is becoming more challenging to find venues for our Provincial Championships. We don’t have a list of clubs waiting to host these two day events, never mind a week-long event (only 8 months down the road). Clubs are having problems getting enough volunteers to help and the interest in doing a big event just isn’t there. Our new Board was elected on November 1st at the Fall AGM in Woodstock. I believe this is the beginning of some new and exciting ideas for the organization. I am pleased to announce that, joining me on the Championship Committee for 2015, will be Jan Bauer, Weston Nesbitt, Jake Schuknecht, Chris Bester and Moe Cosyn. Jan will be the Chair of a working group to determine what the bowlers of Ontario would like to see concerning our Provincial competitions. It is our hope to make some positive changes to our Championships that will appeal to every level of competitive bowling. I am positive that Jan and the Working Group will come through with some great recommendations that will, hopefully, be put in place in 2016. I hope everyone has a great winter and see you in the Spring! Karen Peart Chair, Championship Committee Congratulations to Kelly McKerihen Gold Medal Canadian Indoor Championships November 2014 Officiating Commitee Level 1 Umpire Accreditation The Officiating Committee is organizing testing sites for members who want to acquire their Level 1 Umpire Accreditation. The one-day course will be held in April 2015. The course is carried out in three stages: 1) written open book test; 2) oral response test; 3) on-green measuring course. Details of this program will be included in the March 2015 E-Bulletin. Get ahead of the curve and start studying now! Dave Burrows Chair, Coaching Committee Ad Hoc Working Group (WG) OLBA CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW OPEN CONSULTATION WG Members: Jan Bauer Chris Bester Jake Schuknecht Weston Nesbitt Chair: Advisor: Jan Bauer Moe Cosyn Why A Review? To examine such issues as: 1. Declining participation in current playdown/championship process; 2. Competitive imbalance; 3. Walkovers into Provincials; 4. "Over representation" at Provincials by 1 or more Districts; 5. The impact of the costs of participation in the championship process; 6. The impact of a three-step commitment by potential participants (district, provincial and national championships) in terms of time and money. The Review will be conducted in phases. This is an Open Consultation, particularly in two respects: 1. 2. All members are invited and encouraged to participate; The Review is not limited to consideration of how playdowns and championships are held (e.g. district/zone playdowns, open qualifiers, etc.). A wide range of questions is being prepared and will be presented in a survey, as early in December as possible (please check the OLBA web site regularly, notices will also be sent to District Chairs and Clubs). Following that, further consultation with all members will be organized. Further information will be provided as the process develops.
