School Counsellor (Permanent, Part-time 2015) We seek a counsellor with a background in psychology and or experience working in a school environment. You will need the following expertise: Graduate and preferably post-graduate qualifications Professional membership Excellent communication and listening skills Passionate about young people and their needs An understanding and respect for cultural and gender differences Knowledge and understanding of boarding students Understanding of students who aspire to excellence within the school environment. Willing to work within a multi-disciplinary team This position will be for 4 full days per week (32 hours), Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, (during the school) term time only. To provide a confidential counselling service to students. DUTIES TASKS To liaise with families as appropriate. To liaise with outside agencies, contributing schools and training providers. To support and advise staff and act as a resource person. To support and advise parents, guardians and families. To work closely with the Pastoral Care Network. To work with the Senior Management Team, House Staff, Deans and staff on student related matters. To act as advocate for students in disciplinary situations. To work with the Careers Advisor on careers matters. Reports to external supervisor as appropriate. Member of a professional counselling association. To be involved in the wider life of the School. To be willing to work collaboratively and refer to TENURE Permanent PAY Externally Parents and Caregivers Other community professionals EXPECTED RESULTS PERFORMANCE INDICATORS Communicate with families as necessary. Provide support and resources to staff as necessary. Provide support and advice to parents, guardians and families as necessary. Liaise with other staff members on student related matters. Support students in disciplinary situations. Refer students to Careers Advisor as required. Belong to and keep registration up-todate to a counselling association. Actively participant in school-wide activities. Refer students to psychologist as required. Reports to full-time psychologist in weekly line management. Record notes on confidential school system. Regular meetings and updates are held between counsellor and full-time psychologist. Notes are recorded accurately and regularly on school student management system (Synergetic). PERSON SPECIFICATION Education/Training Eg. Professional registration, degree, diploma, drivers licence, etc Experience/Knowledge ESSENTIAL Drivers licence Fully trained, qualified, registered counsellor. At least 5 years’ experience working as a counsellor. PREFERRED / DESIRABLE Post graduate qualifications. Experience in New Zealand schools. Psychologist or teaching background. Skills Attributes/Abilities Physical Eg. physically able to lift and move heavy furniture, must be able to do repetitive work, etc Excellent Communication and listening skills Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook The ability to use general office equipment such as telephones, photocopiers, printers and faxes Planning and organisational skills Time management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks Effective team player who works collaboratively with others Caring and compassionate Friendly Resilient Good sense of humour Understanding and respect for cultural and gender differences. Understands and works effectively in a complex environment. Exercise discretion and diplomacy when dealing with confidential issues. Be clean and tidy in appearance, professionally groomed A working knowledge of databases. An interest in health and wellbeing of students.
