Although the concept of filling a form seems simple enough, the presenter will also point out the benefits of filling forms correctly and how it will improve the product utilizing some proven techniques. How long should the concrete in a form be vibrated during the filling process, and is more vibration better than less? Join us for this dynamic presentation and find out. Tom Umek Manhole Connector Installation Tom’s original career plan was to be a Physical Education teacher after attending Andrews University in Michigan. After four years of teaching, with the last two in California, the path changed to retail and wholesale sales in the sporting goods industry for seven years. In 1981 he turned to the construction industry where concrete became the main portion of his work and he specialized in unusual projects in California. 4:00 – 5:30 pm — Board of Directors Meeting 6:00 - 7:00 pm — Registration, Reception and Exhibits 7:00 – 8:00 pm — Dinner 8:00 pm – Midnight — Poker Tournament In 1985 Tom joined the Johnson-Bateman company, a third generation concrete pipe producer in Ontario, California, and became the Director of Operations. During the nearly 20 years at JB his experience level grew and he became actively involved with the American Concrete Pipe Association and soon was on the planning committee for the Production Short Course School put on every year by the ACPA. For nearly each of the past 16 years he has been a Task Group Chairman for the production school. Presented by Brian Blevins – Austin Jordan & Associates and Mark Ludwig – J-K Polysource This presentation will discuss and provide a guide to the best installation practices and techniques of mechanically installed manhole connectors. Tuesday, February 10 Northwest College of Construction All events on this day will be held at the Northwest College of Construction 7:30 – 8:00 am — Registration 8:00 am – 4:00 pm — Practical Concepts for Producing Precast Concrete Products Presented by Tom Umek The ability to produce a quality concrete product is significantly improved with experience and some technical knowledge. This presenter brings nearly 30 years of experience and practical technical information about production concepts to this workshop which is designed to enhance the skill levels of production workers. A real emphasis will be put on vibration and how it affects forms, consolidation, and the finish. There will also be live demonstrations of the effects of vibration to help visualize how frequency and amplitude changes can make a difference. Along with theory, some discussion will be included on vibrator maintenance that will help to prolong the life of the vibrators which helps save money. Please consult the hotel for cancellation and After helping to develop one of the highest output machines in the world for the production of concrete pipe in 2000, he left California and joined the Hawkeye Group in Iowa in 2004 where he continued to teach customers about production and the operation of the Hawkeye equipment he had been operating. Cretex Companies Inc. was the next stop and there he worked with several of their plants in management and ultimately worked for Dave Anderson and his group in Technical Services.
