Bahrain ready for Asian test
BAHRAIN coach Marjan Eid yesterday
declared his national soccer team fighting fit and ready to go all out for top
honours in the Asian Cup to be held in
Australia next month.
“We are confident of doing well. We have
worked very hard in the last couple of months
and are confident it will pay off,” said coach Eid
at a Press conference last night at Bahrain Football Association.
Eid becomes the first native to lead his national
team in the premier Asian event which will be
held in Australian cities from January 9 to 31.
Another Bahraini Isa Al Sadoon will be his
assistant while Abdulla Belal the goalkeeping
coach and Brazilian Jose Carlos the physical fitness coach.
Eid has included all the professional players Fawzi Ayesh, Abdulla Omar and Jessi John - in
the squad which was cut from 27 to 23. The trio
were not selected by the previous coach Adnan
Hamad of Iraq for the 22nd Gulf Cup held in Riyadh in October.
Bahrain failed to qualify for the knock-out
stage and coach Hamad was sacked.
Eid said he is very happy with the team as it
has the right mix of youth and experience.
The team leaves for Malaysia today for a training camp which will go on till December 27.
They then leave for Balart City in Australia for
another training camp to be held from December
27 to January 8.
The team will also play three friendly matches
during the camps - one against a Malaysian club
in Kuala Lumpur and against Saudi Arabia and
Jordan in Australia.
The four players dropped from the 27 are Mohammed Al Tayyeb, Ahmed Merza, Dawood
Sa’ad and goalkeeper Ali
Saeed.
On his part, BFA vice-president for technical affairs Ali Al
Buainain stressed that the primary aim was to erase the bitter
memories of the Gulf Cup and
start with a new slate.
Al Buainain added that Eid
will be the head coach and Al
Sadoon his assistant till the end
of the Asia Cup.
“We will evaluate their performance after that and decide
on the future course of action,”
added Al Buainain.

Bahrain

third
in the GCC Showjumping
Championship for Juniors
held during the Custodian of
the Two Holy Mosques King
Abdulla bin Abdulaziz Al
Saud Equestrian Festival in
Riyadh.
The Bahrainis finished behind
overall winners and hosts Saudi
Arabia and runners-up the UAE.
Third place for the national junior team can be considered a fine
achievement, especially with the
participation of advanced riders
from across the GCC.
This confirms that the showjumping sport in Bahrain is
steadily moving upwards as per
plans formulated by Bahrain
Royal Equestrian and Endurance
Federation (Breef).
The Bahrain team consisted of

Khatri riding Wilson 3, Mayouf

Al Faisal praised the efforts
of Bahrain Motor Federation
(BMF) officials in conducting
the Fifth Saudi Motor Racing Festival on Saturday at Al
Reem International Circuit in
Riyadh.
The international event was
supervised by BMF director
Abdulaziz Al Thawadi and a
number of Marshal Club members.

achieved which he said proves
the evolution of this sport.
He added that Breef will intensify local activities and also send
more teams to international competitions.

Mohamadeen wins
Cross Island Race
AHMED Mohamadeen
was the overall winner
in the men’s section of
the Cross Island Race
organised b Bahrain Road Runners.
The event was sponsored by
Alba and was held over 17kms
(approximately) in the desert
on varied terrain with more
than 220 participants.
Mohamadeen
clocked
1:00:08 to win the event
while Maaly Tawr was second
(1:01:17) and Ahmed Ismael
(1:01:18) third.
Glenis Driscoll (1:26:05)
won the women’s race while
Jessica Vondrak (1:28:41) was
second and Kelly McGuffie
(1:30:28) third.
The organisers have thanked
BMI and Organics Cafe for
their donations and Dr Hani
and the great ‘Be Ready’ first
aid team, Adel Marhoon marshals, Hope Ship volunteers
and Bahrain Social Runners
volunteers for their support.
