Gifts for the Journey
Gifts for the Journey is our annual Advent-Christmas event. Just as the Holy Family
was homeless and in need so many years ago, so are many of our neighbors in
these most difficult times. During the coming weeks, you may make a gift to any of
the following organizations after Masses. We will present these gifts at the Feast of
the Epiphany.
•
St. Leo Emergency Services ~ providing assistance for people seeking help at the rectory during the
week.
•
The Food Connection ~ a St. Leo ministry, one of the largest single site food banks in the county. In 2013
we had 135,466 client visits
•
Noah’s Pet Project ~ a free pet clinic for animals living with homeless or low-income people.
•
Catholic Community Services programs including:
CCS Pregnancy Support ~ providing support to low-income women who are pregnant.
The NEW Nativity House - Beginning in January 2015, the services provided by the Hospitality Kitchen and Nativity House will be provided in the new Nativity House. By combining Nativity House, Hospitality Kitchen and Tacoma Avenue Shelter, and 50 units of permanent housing on one site,
CCS will manage the largest, most comprehensive and compassionate outreach to people experiencing homelessness in the Greater Tacoma area.
•
Neighborhood Clinic ~ providing medical care for people without access to regular medical services.
•
Operation Keep ‘Em Warm and Fed ~ developing friendships with people who are without shelter and
providing them with blankets, tarps, and sandwiches.
•
Tacoma Catholic Worker/Guadalupe House ~ providing transitional housing and hospitality to folks who
are homeless ~ along with organizing actions to speak out for justice.
•
L’Arche Tahoma Hope ~ a community of people with developmental disabilities and assistants from varied
backgrounds who share life together.
•
New Connections Irma Gary House ~ provides transitional housing and support for women leaving
prison.

Since Fr. Steve is on sabbatical, we didn’t
have our Advent poetry reading. Instead,
Fr. Jim will be doing an evening (an
hour or so) of recorded seasonal music,
mostly with words. No “Grandma Got
Run over by a Reindeer,” alas—only highclass stuff. It will be in church at 7 PM
on Tuesday, January 6th, 2015, which
was once the Feast of the Epiphany,
or Twelfth Night. We are grateful that
Christmas doesn’t last just a day and
this will be a nice way to end our season
together.

ANAM CARA -- The Anam Cara men’s group will meet at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday
January 7th in the Rectory. Father Jim will facilitate the discussion of Richard
Leonard, SJ’s book Why Bother Praying. This book tells us why we pray and what it
does for us, for God, and for the world. All men are welcome to attend and it is not
necessary to have read this book to attend the meetings.
