Main Line Times Bldg.
Is Gone Forever But The
Newspaper Lives On
For almost 70 years, the
building at 311 E. Lancaster Ave.,
Ardmore, was home to scores of
working newspaper personnel.
They included professional
sales, news, art, circulation and
other occupation men and women necessary to produce the
leading weekly newspaper covering the Main Line.
Now, the former Main Line
Times building is gone forever.
It was completely demolished this autumn.
The current staff has been
moved to 110 Ardmore Ave., Ardmore, PA, where the newspaper, and all its divisions, known
as Main Line Media, continues to
flourish.
The former site will be developed as an automobile dealership.
This is a sample of the ad that ran elsewhere about Hamas, Al-Qaeda and ISIS terrorist’s organizations.
Anti-Terrorist Advertising
Rejected by SEPTA Officials
Slamming the Hamas, Al-Qaeda and Isis terror organizations
via its bus and transit station advertising outlets is a no-no at SEPTA.
SEPTA rejected display posters that brought public attention to
the message that “Jihad is Jihad.”
The refused advertising copy
read:
Former Main Line Times building has been completely demolished. It was
built in 1948. Over the years it had been the home of many publications.

Phony Subscription Bills
Sent to Inq. Readers
It’s bad enough that paid
subscriptions to most newspapers is way, way down…
But now, here in Philadelphia, the Inquirer and Daily News is not even receiving
some subscriber money — intended for them.
A “Fraud Alert” has been
put out by both the leading dailies here.
In full-page house ads,
readers have been notified
that renewal and new order
subscription notices are being
mailed that are deceptive.
According to the multi-published notices published,
“The fraudulent notices
arrive in the mail under different company names, such as:

annual tournament was started 39 years ago by cartoonist Charles

The Philadelphia five-day-aweek free tabloid newspaper, Metro, 30 S. 15th St., (215-717-2695)
has purchased the area’s leading

“City Paper” had been owned

According to published reports, SEPTA’s officials rejected
the ads. And so, SEPTA is being
sued.
Litigation by the ad sponsor,
the Southern Property Law Center,
is pending in Federal Court.

SEPTA, according to an area

There were layoffs at Philadelphia radio station HOT 107.9
recently.
And their former programming of contemporary urban music has been changed to classic
hip-hop jams.
Locally, nine people lost
their jobs.
They include the morning
show hosts Laiya St. Clair and
Shamara Lever, plus “Good Day
Philadelphia’s” familiar face,
Quincy Harris.
The station is the Philadelphia outlet for Radio One, the
largest African-American owned

They have 55 stations in the

Don’t Get Caught With Your Perks Down
By Mike Mallowe
My Soapbox
Just so we are clear about
one thing: a “perk” is not a “benefit”. A perk is something extra.
A perk is part of your company’s “culture”; a benefit is simply
part of your company’s business
plan.
The culture of your organization reflects your deepest beliefs
about people. Your business plan
just reflects your bank account.
You have to decide which
one you are.
Health coverage, along with
dental and vision, are minimal
benefits, or should be, with every job in the United States in my
opinion.
A 401K Plan, or something
like it with a different name, is also a benefit.
Paid sick time; paid family
leave and scheduled vacation
days are also benefits. And there
should be plenty more where
they came from.
Don’t get me started on employers who fail to provide benefits. They will never get any sympathy from me.
The same goes for an employer who thinks that paying
$10 an hour for back-breaking
work is a wise and productive
business decision. That is not
what it is; in fact, it is much closer to slave-labor wages.
We have self-imposed blind
spots about all this in our country. And just because employers
can get away with doing it does
not make it right.
With any luck, though, some
of that – maybe even a lot of it –
is beginning to change.
The Perk Economy
Let me give some examples
of perks – real perks -- that some
very bright, talented and usually
creative people get right now:
One or two days a month
Mike Mallowe
when you are encouraged – and
paid for doing it – to donate a
day or part of a day to a charity
like Meals-on-Wheels, preparing
them or delivering them. Other
companies allow their employees to work in local schools as
tutors. The list goes on...
Paid for gym memberships,
and
other
forward-thinking
health and exercise opportunities are the kinds of perks that
will, in the long run, keep your

employees working harder and
more clear-headed.
Office fun days, at ball
parks, concerts, amusement
parks, museums, movies and
many, many other things can define the character of your perks.
A perk can also be a catered
lunch that no one in the office was
expecting; or it might be a Starbucks coffee machine/dispenser
rather than the Wal-Mart model.
Pilfered office supplies are
not perks. Great looking North
Face parkas with your company
logo discreetly attached are perks.
Cars for key employees can
be perks. Coordinating a free
shuttle service or discount transpasses can be much better perks.
More than anything else, the
right perks say – “I value you.”
If that sounds hokey, just
ask yourself, “Do I value my other, monetary assets?”
can’t really pay them enough.
One of the best ways to attract and keep the top talent is
to place them in a work environment that becomes a second home; a place where they
choose to be, even when they
don’t have to be here.
That’s synergy.
That’s how it works.
Retention
vs. Re-training
Where is the future of your
organization headed?
If you have anything to do
with advertising, marketing, public relations, media or communication the success or failure of
that future will probably be defined by some application of IT
and digital knowledge.
Throw in a good, effective
sales force and you could have a
crystal ball sitting in front of you.
If you have any hope of attracting and keeping the talent
you need, think perks. The pay
will always be comparable at
good, successful businesses.
The truly progressive organizations in Silicon Valley and elsewhere learned about the mobility
of talent a generation ago. Their
talent can always take a walk.
Read what so many of
these visionaries have to say
about their successes and their
cultures and one over-riding impression comes through: I want
and need people to work incredibly hard for me; we can’t
succeed without that. And, we

Barrels Restaurant In Margate
Celebrates 20TH Year
~ Open All Year ~
By Bonnie Squires
Barrels Restaurant in Margate, 9TH South Granville Ave.,
should be considered a major
“survivor.” If you know anything
about the restaurant scene on
Absecon Island, from Brigantine
to Longport, and including Northfield, Somers Point, and other
inland communities, you realize
that for a restaurant to have survived and thrived for twenty years
shows the excellent consistency
of their servings and staff.
The family-owned Barrels,
which boasts four generations of
family members working there,
according to one of the owners,
Chris Gualtieri, is open seven
days a week, all year round.
We were there recently on a
busy Saturday night, and the food,
as always (we have been there
before), was delicious and fresh.
The red snapper special ($19.90) which I ordered
seemed to have just jumped out
of the ocean. The skinny asparagus side dish was tender and
delicious as well.
My guest, Lillian, wanted
breaded veal cutlet ($19.90) the
way she prefers it, with only marinara sauce. Our waitress, Katryn, obliged, and she even filled
the order for “skinny spaghetti”

as the side dish.
Another guest of mine, Sandy had her eye on the flounder
francaise ($19.90) with a side
of spinach. And her companion
started with scallops ($11) which
he shared with two others in our
party, as well as the cup of chicken soup with egg squares. It was
practically enough for a full meal.
He also ordered lobster francaise ($29) and had enough to
take home for the next day.
The Italian bread is crisp on
the outside and soft and fresh on
the inside. And the salad choices come with the main dish.
Even the small orders of
Caesar salad were huge, and
one of our party took half of hers
home for the next day.
It was tough to decide on
dessert choices, as everything
looked so wonderful. The strawberry shortcake ($4.90 per slice)
was light and fluffy. The peanut
butter pie (also $4.90 per slice),
with its rich chocolate icing and
thin layer of chocolate graham
cracker crust underneath the
peanut-filled center was the star
dessert for us.
Barrels caters parties and
events, either in their restaurant
(which seats 75) or at homes
and apartment buildings along
the shore line.
They also deliver meals.
Their hot pink menus are left at
various condos and apartment
buildings in the area.
Chris told us that even the
threat of casinos closing does
not have him down. He said he
is very optimistic about the future
of the region.
The only days Barrels is
closed during the year are Easter and Christmas.
As you leave, ask for an extra handful of the free chocolate
candies sitting in a basket at the
bar (Know, however, the restaurant is a B.Y.O.B.)
Parking is free next to the
restaurant, or on street.
For reservations, call 609823-4400.
Barrels is one of the most popular restaurants at the Jersey shore,
located in Margate. Seen here on a busy Saturday night were diners

MENTORS
Providers of “Degrees” For Living
Recently I read that those applying for jobs in fields
including marketing are often asked:
“Do you have a Master’s Degree?”
I have a question:
“Is a Master’s Degree, possibly even a lesser degree,
necessarily beneficial?”
For college students, there is a many-years payback
of huge student loans, plus a minimum of four years of no
real on-the-job experience.
Is it worth it for everyone? In my opinion, not necessarily.
A degree is not an automatic guarantee of success.
There are many, many plumbers, carpenters, salesmen, mechanics, even bartenders and barbers that make
excellent livings — without a college degree.
In older generations, my generation as an example, success came by having an early start working from
ground up and learning a lifetime skill — by doing.
Harry Dozer
founder and president of a
Philadelphia, publicly-owned,
major insurance company
At a meeting on a Sunday morning, in the kitchen
of his Lower Merion home, he explained to me what he
wanted my ad agency, American Advertising Services, to
write for his Wall Street Journal full pages.
He showed me competitor’s ads.
“Read them,” he said, “They work.”
“Don’t try to be so creative, that to be original you
make a square wheel”
He then said: “The round wheel works!”
I never forgot that.
W. Clement Stone
Have a mentor
To be personal, mentors were my “college professors”. They gave me a masters in ethics and life.
They were not academics.
They were working, successful entrepreneurs and
professionals — willing to pass on their knowledge to an
ambitious teenager, then a young man and on to the early
owner of a small start-up firm:
Me!
I remember those mentors, with gratitude. And I do
as I can, to pass on to others my continuing experiences
gained from “doing”.
Mentor Memories
Some of my mentors were:
Joe Ball
Joe Ball, editor , at work in the Home Edition office,
Phila. Inquirer, about 1949.
Frank Brookhouser
a daily columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer,
host of one of the earliest Phila. television news
shows, and author of several books
I was 17-years-old when I met Mr. Brookhouser. I was
a copyboy in the newsroom of The Inquirer.
He taught me newspaper journalism.
I still remember him saying:
“Write to communicate. Short sentences
are fine. Single word sentences are fine.”
Merrill Panett
president, Combined Insurance Co. of America
In March, 1972, Jack Kelly, brother to Princess Grace
of Monaco, and I originated and produced the “American
Football and Basketball Conference” the largest event of its
kind ever held in the U.S. It was at Notre Dame University.
When I visited W. Clement Stone president of a major insurance co., at his Chicago office to invite him to be
a member of the Awards Committee, I saw on his desk a
sign. It read:
“Do It Now.”
I took the advice, following it to this day.
In fact, I often say to people: “I’m a do-it-now guy.”
I am.
Laigh M. Cohan
He was my wife’s dad. My father-in-law.
A brilliant, self-made, highly-successful entrepreneur,
he manufactured lamp shades, and was a wise real estate
investor and developer.
Shortly after our marriage, knowing I had been in my
own business only two years, among the advice he gave
me re: business transactions were:
“Let the other fellow live.” (My interpretation was to be
fair, with the other party also benefiting.)
I’ve tried to always do this.
He also said to me:
“To have a happy marriage, have a happy wife.”
I’ve now been married 56 years — and have a happy
wife…I hope!
first editor of TV Guide Magazine
At 19 years of age, I was editor of The Inquirer’s employee magazine, “Home Edition.”
I wrote the entire 48-page, pocket-size
magazine.
I had my own small office, a typewriter,
desk and a chair.
Mr. Panett’s office was across the hall.
I worked on the magazine, “Home Edition” on my days off from my job at the City
Desk. (I was on two payrolls. News and Promotion Departments.)
Mr. Panett taught me how to lay out a
small-size magazine. TV Guide and Home
Edition were close in size.
my dad
When I went into business, he said, “Here are three
words to remember.”
They are:
“Persevere. Persevere. Persevere.”
I have done so.
And this coming year will mark my 59th year enjoying
the advertising and marketing firm I originated in 1956.
I have…Persevered.
George Neil
Education Gained
General Manager, Phila. Inquirer
As editor of “Home Edition”, I had access
to almost all personnel at 400 N. Broad St.,
to interview them, to write about them, their
functions, and how things would come together at a major newspaper.
In those days, there were five editions
per day, Bulldog, Late Bulldog, City Edition,
Late City, and Final City.
I recall Mr. Neil, in his office getting on the
floor, on his knees, spreading out a section
of The Inquirer to explain to me “forms”; how
4-pages, 8-pages came together for press.
He was the general manager — and a
teacher.
Gene Vassil
former Sales Manager at WFIL radio
Gene taught me a saying, that I’ve used
— and passed on to others.
It is: “Find a way to do business.”
I’ve changed it, when trying to help others. My instruction is:
“Do not hear the first no… just give another idea…”
THE PHILADELPHIA REGIONAL BUSINESS/MARKETING MONTHLY
Milton H. Ball (“Mickey”)
All of the aforementioned mentors are now deceased.
Their success and my success possibly have been
attained by remembering and following their lessons.
I did not go to college. (I went to night classes at Temple University. No degree.)
But, having the opportunity to be led by professionals I met through my workplaces I, received an education.
I thank them…
~~~
Postscript: My wife, Sandy, also taught me two important words.
They are:
“Thank you.”
So, to my wife (especially!) and to others, past and
future…”Thank you.”
