Celebrating the Long Service Milestone
长期服务员工之里程碑
Autism Association (Singapore) (AA(S)) recognises the commitment and dedication of
staff who bring diverse skills and experiences to their work. To further acknowledge and
appreciate such important contributions, the Long Service Award has been presented
annually to the long service staff.
This year, the Long Service Award was presented during the AA(S) Staff Appreciation
Dinner and Teachers’ Day Celebration on 4 September 2014 at the Gardenasia, Kranji
Farm. To mark the long service anniversaries, the Association took the opportunity to
gather the stories of several staff who received the Long Service Award in 2013 and 2014.

Sarayanan s/o Mariappa (15-Year Long
Service Award 2014)
One of her unforgettable moments was when
one of her non-verbal students finally articulated
“I want” in her lesson on making a request. The
mother was so excited and gave her a big hug! Both
of them went on to shed tears of joy.
Tutie has recently taken on the role as Assistant
Head of the Centre at Eden CC-Clementi. She is
honoured and delighted with this new chapter in
her career.
Teresa Lim Soo Gek (15-Year Long Service Award
2013)

In 1999, after spotting an advertisement in the field
of autism, Sarayanan decisively applied for it. That
marked his start as a trainer at Autism Youth Centre
(the predecessor of Eden Centre for Adults (Eden
CFA)).
Through the years, Sarayanan has doggedly
accumulated, practised and applied his learning
and skills to benefit the clients and their parents. His
clients’ progress has been a push factor that made
him assume new challenges. Currently, he is the
Head of Centre at Eden CFA-Hougang. The position
offers him the opportunity to further acquire
supervisory, coaching and management skills.
Tutie Noorsiah Bte Alui (15-Year Long
Service Award 2014)
15 years ago, Tutie was sent to AA(S) on a threemonth temporary job stint as a front desk officer.
She began to learn about autism and the Early
Intervention Programme.
After being inspired by teacher Norwati, her interest
in teaching grew and she began as a trainer at
Autism Youth Centre in 1999, before moving on to
Autism Children’s Centre (the current Eden Children’s
Centre (Eden CC)) at Clementi in 2000.

Teresa joined AA(S) in 1998 and was posted to the
Autism Youth Centre as a Centre Administration
Officer. Even after all these years, she has sustained
her focus in the task of rendering valuable help to
colleagues and clients.
Besides her administration work at Eden CFAHougang, she is thankful that she could be of
service to parents who need a listening ear.
Through the sharing moments, she understands
that adults with autism are like typical people, just
that they express their inner needs and interact
with others in different ways.

Nurhidayati Bte Hussain (10-Year Long
Service Award 2014)
After 10 years as an Early Intervention teacher,
every child’s small step of achievement still
encourages Nurhidayati who made a career shift
from administrative work to teaching.
To her, teamwork is important and it is the
backbone of classroom activities towards meeting
the children’s and their families’ expectations, as
well as facilitating their smooth transitions to the
next phase.
She works closely with the families at Eden CCSimei and leverages on the strong relationship to
overcome obstacles.

Shuhaidah Abdullah (10-Year Long Service Award 2014)
Shuhaidah started as a Centre Administration Officer at Eden CC-Clementi and was transferred to Eden CC-Simei in November
2013.
The transfer provided her the prospect to work with a different group of clients, care-givers and co-workers; as well as to
further hone her capabilities. She is glad to be part of the new team which comprises zealous teachers who are always ready
to give their best for the children.
Witnessing the improvements and progress of the children has driven her to continually commit her service to support the
centre’s personnel.

Fan Di (5-Year Long Service Award 2013)
Back in 2008, Fan Di was considering a change in career. He had always wanted to be a
teacher to contribute to the special needs community. After being introduced by a good
friend to work as a volunteer at Eden School, he subsequently decided to apply for a
teaching position. Because he discovered that he really enjoyed working with the students.
Over the years, he has taught cohorts who have different cognitive levels. As a Job Coach
from 2010 to 2012, part of his responsibility was to liaise with private organisations and
institutions to identity possible worksites for graduating students.
Fan Di believes there is no end to learning. He is steadfast about developing the strengths
and talents of every student. Last year, he witnessed his students’ graduation which made
him feel that all the hard work is worthwhile. He attributed his source of motivation to the
senior teachers who demonstrate fervent efforts and drive.

Zainon Bte Hussin (5-Year Long Service Award 2013)
Zainon was a kindergarten teacher. She thought that she would always be a pre-school teacher,
until she watched a television programme that featured the families of children with autism. That
sparked interest in her and she began to read up on autism. She went on to join Eden School as
a special education teacher and has never looked back.
Jonathan Kee, a student who graduated from Eden School last year and currently undergoing
employability training in the Eden School, has strengthened Zainon’s conviction that autism is no
hindrance to one’s independence in life.
Her students’ improvements and the parents’ support have spurred her on to try her best in her
profession.

Getting into special needs education and service is not easy except for those who persist and persevere. They often face challenges that could
deflate their well-intended hopes and dreams. The common traits among the long service staff are palpable passion, stoic determination and a
strong sense of belonging to the organisation.
The management would like to thank all the long service staff for their dedicated service and contributions.

新加坡自闭症协会珍惜员工的努力与付出，他们将不同的技能与经验运用
到工作中。为了进一步认可及感谢员工的贡献，协会每年都会颁发长期服
务奖。
今年的长期服务奖颁奖典礼选在9月4日员工感谢晚宴和教师节庆祝活动中
举行,地点在克兰芝农场Gardenasia。协会更借此机会，收集了一部分2013
年和2014年获奖者的故事，和大家分享。
1999年，在看到关于自闭症领域聘请的广告后，Sarayanan决定申请这个职
位。他开始在自闭症青年中心（忆恩成人中心的前生）担任训练员。
经过长期不懈的坚持，Sarayanan将他所累积的经验和技能运用在工作中。
客户的进步是他接受新挑战的推动力。
目前，他担任忆恩成人中心（后港）的主管。这个职位使他有机会进一步发
展监管，教导和管理的技能。
15年前，Tutie得到自闭症协会为期3个月的短期工作机会，当一名前台职
员。她开始接触和学习，自闭症及其早期干预课程。
受到Norwati老师的启发，她萌发了当老师的兴趣，并于1999年开始在自闭
症青年中心担任训练员，而后于2000年调至金文泰的自闭症儿童中心（即
现在的忆恩儿童中心）。
她的一个难忘经历，是一个不会说话的学生，终于在她课堂上说出“我要”
的时刻，孩子的妈妈非常激动，当下给了她一个深深的拥抱！她们俩都高兴
地哭了。
Tutie不久前被任命为忆恩儿童中心（金文泰）的助理主管。她为她职业生
涯中的新篇章，感到光荣和开心。
素玉于1998年加入自闭症协会，担任自闭症青年中心的行政职员。经过许
多年之后，她仍然专注于为同事和客户提供帮助。
除了在忆恩成人中心（后港）的行政工作外，她也成为有需要的家长倾诉的
对象。通过聆听，她了解到成人自闭症患者和我们一般人一样，只是他们用
不同的方式表达需求和与人互动。
从行政人员转行当早期干预老师的Nurhidayati，现在已有十年的教师经验，
哪怕只是微小的一步，每个孩子的成就，对她都是一种激励。
INTERVIEW
对她而言，团队合作至关重要，组织的课堂活动能否达到孩童与他们家人
期望，以及活动能否顺利地过渡到下一环节，团队合作都起到举足轻重的
作用。
她与忆恩儿童中心（四美）儿童的家人紧密合作，通过建立良好的关系,以
帮助他们克服障碍。
Shuhaidah原是忆恩儿童中心（金文泰）的行政职员，于2013年11月调至
忆恩儿童中心（四美）。
这一调动带给她全新的体验：不同的客户，不同的看护者和不同的同事，
同时也磨练了她的能力。她很开心加入新的团队，这里有热心的老师，随
时准备着为孩子提供最好的帮助。
见证了孩子们的进步后，她更有信心为中心作出贡献。
回到2008年,当时范堤正考虑转换职业跑道。他一直想要当一名老师，为特
殊需要人群作出贡献。由朋友引荐后，他进入忆恩学校做义工。随后他决
定申请教师职位，因为他发现他非常喜欢和这些学生打交道。
几年来，他教过不同认知水平的学生。2010年至2012年间，他担任就业教
练。他的一项工作就是与各用人单位联系，为毕业生寻求可能的工作场所。
范堤相信学无止境。他对发展每个学生的强项和才能都坚持不懈。去年，
他见证了他的学生的毕业典礼，让他倍感所有的努力都是值得的。他将他
的动力之源归功于资深教师们，因为他们展现的热忱与努力鼓舞了他。
Zainon曾经是一位幼稚园老师。她原以为她会一直当学前教师，直到有一
天，她看了一个有关自闭症孩童家庭的电视节目。这个节目激发了她的兴
趣，她开始阅读关于自闭症的书籍。接着她来到忆恩学校担任特教老师，
直到今天。

他的进展让Zainon更加相信，自闭症不该成为影响个人独立性的障碍。学
生的进步和家长的支持，激励她在教职道路上继续前进，做到最好。
投身特教事业并非易事，尤其是那些坚持不懈的一群，因为他们时常面对
一些挑战，可随时挫败他们美好的初衷和梦想。长期投身这一行业的员工
有一个共同点，就是他们有满腔的热情，坚定的决心和对组织机构强烈的
归属感。

Getting to Know Our Staff
- Norhashimah Adam
For Eden School’s teacher Norhashimah Adam (also known as Shimah), teaching was
a childhood dream. However, the dream took a bit longer to achieve.
Upon graduation from polytechnic, circumstances found Shimah having to work as
an administrative assistant for five years before she obtained an Allied Educator (AED)
position with the Ministry of Education.
As an AED, she was exposed to the different conditions such as intellectual disability,
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism. That was how she began her
journey of discovery into the world of people with special needs. Autism caught her
attention due to the broad spectrum that it encompasses.
After finding out that her cousin was a “Youth for Autism” intern at Eden School, her
heightened interest led her to find out more about working in an autism-focused
school. One thing led to the other and here she is, at Eden School.

Coming from a mainstream educational environment, Shimah had to adapt her approaches to a more autism-friendly context. For example, she
had to make her instructions more clear and concise. Tasks had to be broken down into short and digestible steps (Task Analysis) to allow for
students’ processing of information and successful work execution. Her colleagues have been very supportive and accommodating, helping her
to prepare autism-friendly teaching materials and handle the students effectively.
Shimah is a firm believer in the value of establishing sound rapport with students. Her experiences of using a personal touch, even with challenging
students, have cemented her belief that a lot of things can be achieved through a good teacher-student relationship.

Oon Xyn’s Performance at ComChest Care & Share Charity
Show 2014
Eden Bakery Booth at the “A Very Special Concert”
Oon Xyn, a five-year-old girl at Eden Children’s Centre (Simei) (Eden CCSimei) was invited to perform at ComChest Care & Share Charity Show
2014. This annual MediaCorp show was televised ‘live’ from the Resorts
World Sentosa Theatre on 27 July 2014. It raised in excess of $6.2 million
for the beneficiaries that Community Chest helps to support.
In conjunction with ‘A Very Special Concert’ (AVSC) held on 2 August 2014
at the Singapore Polytechnic Auditorium, Eden School set up a booth
where two Senior students from the vocational track manned it to sell
croissants (sponsored by Bakerzin) and a variety of cookies (that were
baked at the school). The colourful and delicious Rocher aux Amandes
(Almond Rock) cookies were baked by the students on the Extended
Hours Programme in the school’s bakery.
The family of Oon Xyn ferried her to MediaCorp over three weekends
for the rehearsals. Her mum, JoJo, appreciated the invitation and was
more than willing to invest the time and efforts. “This is what Oon Xyn
loves – performing and showcasing her talent in music. I will do my best
to support my daughter’s interest and nurture her potential,” she shared.

Xyn at Eden CC-Simei to
capture her responses
to the teaching process
that included the use
of visual supports and
structure.
The exposure at the booth during the
AVSC enabled students to practise
their classroom skills in an authentic
setting. They had the chance to
interact with customers, talk about the
products and coax sales. In addition,
they learnt to record purchases and
give out the correct change. Many
customers were impressed by the
students’ confidence and singlemindedness to the task at hand. It
was truly a rewarding experience for
everyone involved.

Far East Organization Children’s Garden
On Children’s Day (3 October 2014), Far East Organization Children’s
Garden welcomed some special guests who gathered to admire the
beautiful landscape and enjoy dazzling performances.
Joining in the celebration was Mr. Khaw Boon Wan, Minister for National
Development, who presented cheques on behalf of Far East Organization
to nine children charities. Autism Association (Singapore) (AA(S)) received
a cheque amount of $50,000 and the donations will go towards the
development of our programmes and activities.
Eden School represented AA(S) as a beneficiary, by sending 80
participants which consisted of 24 students and their family members.
Besides AA(S) Patron, Ms. Ho Ching and Chairman, Mr. Ho Swee Huat, the
School Supervisor, Ms. Denise Phua and Principal, Mrs. Jenny Lai were
present too. The array of activities included a walk under the Super Trees,
performances, balloon-fishing, face-painting and water-gun shooting.
The participants also enjoyed the delightful cold treat in the hot weather.

Guests were greeted by rainbow arches.
It was an entertaining and fulfilling outing that was made possible by Far
East Organization.
The water playground offered a cool respite.

Intangible Gifts from our Clients and Students
The Autism Association (Singapore) (AA(S)) held its Staff Appreciation
Dinner and Teachers’ Day Celebration on 4 September 2014. Some of
AA(S)’s clients and students were involved in the pre-event projects.
The teamwork and efforts were synergistic and accumulative:
. Children from Eden Children’s Centres (Clementi and Simei) drew little
notes to form the designs on the invitation cards;
The collection of artistic works.
. Clients from Eden Centre for Adults recycled old magazines to

warmed the hearts of the recipients.
. Students from Eden School then packed items into the carriers. The
The projects were opportunities for our clients, students and children to
exercise the skills that they have learnt through the various programmes.
Their acts of service and their eager participation were transformed into
valuable gifts of appreciation for the teachers and staff.
RDA Horse-Riding Therapy
The Polliwogs Town
On 4 September 2014, four clients
from Eden Centre for Adults
(Eden CFA) had a very unique and
wonderful experience, courtesy
of the Riding for the Disabled
Association of Singapore (RDA).
They had the opportunity to ride
horses on the RDA premises that are
situated in the lush surroundings of
James (in blue shirt) looking cool.

This was a 10-week pilot project by RDA in collaboration with the Central
Singapore Community Development Council (CDC) to bring horseriding to people with special needs. It was definitely a worthwhile and
memorable encounter for our young adults.
On 2 October 2014, Eden Children’s Centre (Clementi) had their
children’s’ day outing at Polliwogs, East Coast Park. A total of 37
children together with their parents, 12 teachers and 24 volunteers
attended the outing that was sponsored by the SingHealth Group.

Eden CFA is thankful to both RDA and Central Singapore CDC for this project
which gave our clients another novel adventure. It resonates with Eden’s
motto of dignity, meaningfulness and independence for clients.

Both children and adults had a whale of a time. There was a patio
by the beach where some adults relaxed while the children had
an active programme: running and climbing in the indoor maze,
jumping down the outdoor bouncy slides; as well as tackling tunnels,
ball pit and interactive activity panels.

Eden School Sports Day and Carnival
17 October 2014 saw the launch of the much-anticipated inaugural
Eden School Sports Day at Millennia Institute (MI). Ms. Denise Phua,
Eden School’s Supervisor, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. In
addition to parents, volunteers from Symrise Asia Pacific Pte Ltd were also
present to lend support.
A total of 86 students
participated in four
track items (25m, 50m,
100m, 4x25m relay) and
two field events (long
jump and javelin). There
was also an exciting
Parent, Staff and Symrise
volunteers’ 8x50m relay
which was a refreshing
finale to a very successful
Sports Day.

School where a Sports Carnival was taking place as well. The carnival was
specially planned for students who might not cope with the demands of
an outdoor activity.

Children’s Day Celebrations at Eden Children’s Centre (Simei)
SingHealth President’s Challenge 2014
This year’s Children’s Day was a grand celebratory event at Eden Children’s
Centre (Simei) (Eden CC-Simei). We had the kind sponsorship of gifts and
cupcakes from CA Trust PAC and Afternoon Tea respectively. Students
received stationery packs that were lovingly packed by employees of CA Trust
PAC. Students also had their sugary dose of delicious chocolate cupcakes.
“A Culture of Compassion” is the theme of SingHealth President’s
Challenge (PC) 2014. SingHealth PC provides a platform for hospitals,
specialty centres and polyclinics under the SingHealth Group to
collectively support a national cause towards caring for the less
fortunate in Singapore.
Held in conjunction with the celebration was a Family Day outing on 11
October 2014. A total of 63 undergraduates from Singapore Institute of
Technology Community Service Club (SIT-CSC) volunteered, in addition to
our regular volunteers (Benson, Meridyn, Sheridyn and Claire).
As one of the five beneficiaries of SingHealth PC 2014, Autism
Association (Singapore) (AA(S)) was involved in a few activities. These
included a Heart Pillar Wrap with PC heart-shaped pledge stickers,
outreach outing for Eden Chilldren’s Centres (Clementi) and the finale
event with a “Family Walk”.
Each child was paired with a volunteer to explore the newly renovated
playground at the Pasir Ris Park. The exploration was followed by bubblesblowing and parachute-playing activities before a satisfying bento lunch.
“How much energy do these kids actually have?’’ was a top question that
the volunteers had. By the end of the event, the unanimous answer was:

Daren Chan, Head of Programme at SITCSC, had this to share: “Giving back to
the community, witnessing the children’s
bright and candid smiles, being part of
the spontaneous giggles all warmed my
heart. The children with autism are not at
all vastly different from the mainstream
ones. They are curious, bubbly and active
like other young children. With patience
and understanding, we can help them by

annual fund-raising campaign
raised a significant amount of
$510,000 for the beneficiaries.
