Newcastle transport
services are changing
– A new transport interchange is being
built at Wickham, which will be a
hub for the new light rail, trains, buses
and taxis.
– With the new interchange due to open
in 2016, this will mean the permanent
closure of Newcastle, Civic and
Wickham stations.
– Hamilton station will be closed from
26 December 2014 to 4 January 2015 for
minor upgrades.
– Once reopened from 5 January,
Hamilton station will be a more
accessible, safe and comfortable
interchange for customers connecting
with train services.
– Newcastle Shuttle Bus services
(Route 110), will be introduced to replace
train services between Hamilton
and Newcastle stations. They are
timetabled to meet trains for customers
travelling in both directions.
– These shuttle bus services are included in
the price of your standard train ticket.
Shuttle buses will:
run every 10 minutes at peak times, and regularly
at other times, to meet every train
be accessible, with low floor entry
be clean and modern
be air-conditioned
have a seat for every customer
have space for luggage
carry surfboards at no extra charge
provide plenty of additional services for special
events in the city centre, like New Year’s Eve and
the Asian Cup

services (Route 110)
When will buses start to replace trains?
Dedicated shuttle buses will run from 26 December 2014
until the Wickham interchange is completed.
Will there be shelter at shuttle
bus stops?
Yes. There will be protection from the weather at all
shuttle bus stops.
How long will shuttle buses be needed?
Once the Wickham interchange is complete, all trains will
terminate there. Buses will continue to meet trains and
connect you with the Newcastle CBD until light rail
construction is complete.
When the new light rail between the Wickham
interchange, the Newcastle CBD and the beach is
complete, shuttle buses will no longer operate.

How will shuttle buses connect with
train services?
Buses will be scheduled to meet every train. There will be
extra services during morning and afternoon peak times,
and for special events.
What hours will shuttle buses run?
On weekdays, the first shuttle bus service from
Newcastle will leave at 2.11 am, and the last at 12.01 am.
On weekends, the first service will leave at 1.19 am, and
the last at 11.08 pm.
Outbound from city centre:
Buses will run every 10 minutes at peak times. There will
be a shuttle bus to meet every scheduled outbound train
service, which will pick up customers at all shuttle bus stops
between Newcastle and Hamilton.
Inbound to city centre:
Every inbound train will be met by a shuttle bus taking
you towards Newcastle and stopping at all shuttle stops.
Even the last customer on the final late-night train will still
find a bus waiting.

Quick facts to help you plan your travel
From 26 December 2014 to 4 January 2015:
– Trains start and finish at Broadmeadow to allow
improvements to be made at Hamilton station.
– Trains will run to a timetable similar to the NSW TrainLink
weekend timetable every day over this holiday period.
– Taxi services and kiss-and-ride facilities will remain.
– If you are travelling from Newcastle, Civic, Wickham
or Hamilton, catch a shuttle bus from these stations to
Broadmeadow to connect with your train.
– If you are travelling to Newcastle, Civic, Wickham
or Hamilton, leave the train at Broadmeadow and
connect with a shuttle bus to your destination.

– Buses from Newcastle will leave around 25 minutes
before connecting trains are due to depart Hamilton.
– Taxi services and kiss-and-ride facilities will remain.
– If you are travelling from Newcastle, Civic or Wickham,
catch a shuttle bus to Hamilton to connect with
your train.
– If you are travelling to Newcastle, Civic or Wickham,
leave the train at Hamilton and connect with a shuttle
bus to your destination.

How much are the shuttle bus fares?
Whether you are using a paper ticket or an Opal card,
travel on Newcastle Shuttle Buses will cost the same as
if you were catching the train. This means you will only pay
your usual fare, based on current train ticket prices.
If you have an Opal card
Travelling from Newcastle
1. Tap on the shuttle bus
2. Tap off the shuttle bus
3. Tap on at the station

Your two trips are counted as a single train journey.

How do I purchase a ticket?
– If you are travelling into Newcastle purchase a train ticket
to your final destination and just show it to the driver
when you board the shuttle bus.
– When travelling from the Newcastle area you can
purchase your ticket when you board the bus or at the
ticket vending machines available at Newcastle and
Civic stations.
– You can save with Opal. Just tap on and off the shuttle
bus, then tap on and off at your station. It will be
registered as a single train journey.
If you do not have an Opal card
Travelling from Newcastle
1. Purchase a train ticket
on board the bus.
2. You do not need to
purchase another
ticket – this ticket
is valid for your
entire journey.
3. If you are departing
from a gated station,
just show your ticket
to a staff member and
they will let you out.
Travelling into Newcastle
1. Purchase a train ticket.
2. Show your train
ticket when
boarding the
shuttle bus.
3. Leave the
shuttle bus.
Special events
Newcastle hosts a number of special events
(e.g. New Year’s Eve and the Asian Cup). Special event
buses and trains are often organised for these
events. For special event trip planning please visit

Road changes
The construction of the interchange and increased train
movements in the area will mean some changes to the
surrounding roads.
These changes will include:
– Boom gates removed at Stewart Avenue and
Merewether Street.
– Permanent closure of Railway Street.
– Altered line markings and turns at some intersections.
More information on these changes will soon be available
on livetraffic.com and all changes will be clearly signed.
