Friday Movie Club @ Cholamandal presents a PBS Documentary - BETWEEN THE FOLDS
This film chronicles 10 stories modern-day paper folders who left conventional career paths to emerge as successful origami
artists. Featuring interviews with three of the world's foremost origami artists: a former sculptor in France who folds caricatures
in paper rivaling the figures of Daumier and Picasso; a hyper-realist who walked away from a successful physics career; and an
artisanal papermaker who folds impressionistic creations. The film also features advanced mathematicians and a remarkable
scientist who received a MacArthur Genius Award for his computational origami research. This unique film shows how closely
art and science are intertwined. The medium of paper folding emerges as a resounding metaphor for the creative potential for
transformation in all of us. On Friday, 19th December, 2014 from 7pm – 8.30pm Entry is free and open to all, seating is on a

24th Dec – 29th Dec 2014: Traditional dance performance of Tamilnadu by “Salangai Oli” - John
Peter and Troupe from Thanjavur.
The performance includes Kolattam, Thappattam, Kummiattam, and Oyilattam. Kollatam is a joyful performance performed by
women on festive and auspicious occasions. Thappattam is an ancient rural tradition, also known as Paraiattam. Thappu or Parai
is the name of the single-sided drum played by the dancers while they perform. Kummiattam is where women dancing in a circle,
clapping hands to the rhythm of the song, is common throughout India. Oyilattam is performed by men and women dance with
rhythmic changes of the body and hand and leg movement.

31st Dec – 5th Jan 2015: Bonalu performance by Shri. Vaddepally Srinivas and troupe, Andhra
Pradesh.
Bonalu is the name of a Hindu Festival celebrated in Andhra Pradesh.. The Bonalu festival is celebrated in worship of Mahakali and
her various forms. The dance is performed by both men and women who take up difference roles during the performance. It also
resembles the Garagalu Dance, which is exclusively performed in temples.
7th Jan – 12th Jan 2015 : Goravara Kunitha performance by Puttamalle Gowda and his troupe,
Karnataka
Goravara Kunitha is performed by the men of the Kuruba community who are the devotees of Lord Mylaralinga, a form of Shiva. It
is a ritualistic performance and is connected to the myths of Lord Shiva who annihilate the demon Tarakasura in the form of a
Gorava.
14th Jan – 19th Jan 2015 : Pongal Festival : Myillattam, Poikal kudhirai and Karagam by
Raju and Troupe
The harvest festival most popular in Tamilnadu will be celebrated with great pomp and grandeur at DakshinaChitra, creating the
mood and colours of rural Tamilnadu. Folk dances like Myillattam, Poikkal kudhirai, and Karagam by Raju and Troupe will be
performed on all the days.
21st– 26th Jan 2015 : Ottan Thullal performance by Kalamandalam Suresh Kaliyath
Among the traditional performing arts of Kerala, Thullal is distinct with its simplicity of presentation . The songs are in simple
Malayalam and the techniques employed in this art are not rigid and also based on the classical principles of Naatya Saastra. Ottan
Thullal is a solo performance usually done by men.
28th Jan – 1st Feb 2015: Folk performance by Mohanam Cultural Centre, Puducherry
The troupe will perform Kummi, Karagattam, Kolaattam, Therukoothu and martial art form of Silambattam on all these days.
The performance timings are 11am - 12.30 pm and 3 - 5 pm.

DakshinaChitra Museum celebrates the art and culture of Himachal Pradesh for 9 days beginning 13th December to 21st
December 2014 jointly organized with the South Zone Cultural Centre. The festival aims to bring together the rich and diverse
traditions of Himachal culture, highlighting the dance forms and crafts of Himachal Pradesh. The festival will be an educative
and fun experience for the Chennai public and visitors to our city. Performances include:Folk performances include Mahasu Nati,
