Supervision of Children The Harrison County YMCA requires that all children under the age of 8 have adult supervision at all times. Registration Due to limited space or imposed pupil/instructor ratios, some classes have limited enrollment. Advance registration is required. Classes with a “*” by their fee are eligible for a $5 early discount. These are applied if paid by: Session I, 12/29/14; Session II, 2/16/15; and Session III, 4/6/15. Financial Assistance Policy The Y is a membership organization with a charitable purpose. Our Financial Assistance Policy enables the Y to assist families and individuals who want to participate but cannot afford the entire fee. Applications are available at the Front Desk. No youth is turned away for financial reasons. Session I Jan 5-Feb 21 ▪ Session II Feb 23-Apr 11 ▪ Session III Apr 13-May 30 YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Nurturing the potential of every child and teen. Swim Lessons Parent/Child Class (Ages 6 mths. – 3 yrs.) The primary objective of this 30-minute class is to promote enrichment and aquatic readiness. Parent/child pool interaction helps prepare children for swim lessons. The main goal is getting the child comfortable in and around the water. Saturdays 10-10:30 a.m. Members: $23.50* Non-members: $36* Preschool Swim (Ages 3-5 years) As the first experience in the pool without parental assistance, the child is taught basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming. They also learn about pool safety and the use of personal flotation devices. During this 45-minute class, participants are divided into skill levels. Saturdays 10-10:45 a.m. Members: $33.00* Non-members: $47.00* Youth Swim (Ages 6-12) This beginning level for school-age children gets them acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices and front and back floating. They will progress through seven skill levels with each level building upon the preceding one, covering strokes and safety skills. Saturdays 10-10:45 a.m. Members: $33.00* Non-members: $47.00* Private Swim Lessons For more information on one-on-one swim lessons, call 304-623-3303. Members: $25/hr. Non-members: $35/hr. Session I Jan 5-Feb 21 ▪ Session II Feb 23-Apr 11 ▪ Session III Apr 13-May 30 Lifeguard Certification Classes begin the first Friday of each month and run the entire month based on the schedule prepared by the instructor. Classes are scheduled for January, February, March, April, and May. You must attend all scheduled classes to complete your certification. CPR and First Aid are included in the fee. Age requirement: 15 by the end of your training month. $250 Swim Team Must be a Y member to participate. Masters Swimming This free program can help you improve your swimming and place you against some of the best swimmers in the world. Our program is comprised of collegiate swimmers, triathlon enthusiasts, novices, and everything in between. We compete in the Allegheny Mountain Y Masters Association League. For more information, call Brian Levake at 304-629-1505. HAYST This highly successful competitive swim team represents the Harrison County YMCA throughout WV, OH and PA. WATER FITNESS Water Aerobics (Class Limit: 30) Gladys, Paige, Andrea, Sue & Sandra Join our instructors for a complete body workout using the water as resistance. The class is a combination of cardio, strengthening and toning with little impact on the joints. Zumba in the water is a whole new level to experience! M/W/F 8:30-9:30 a.m. Non-members: Session I & II $83* Session III $80* Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program (Class Limit: 12) Certified Instr Phyl & Nancy The combination of the buoyancy of the water and the heated water make a safe, ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness. Gentle movements used in the program increase joint flexibility and range of motion, while restoring or maintaining muscle strength. REGISTRATION IS A MUST FOR THIS CLASS! Offered off-site at Bridgeport Physical Therapy. T/Th 2:30-3:30 p.m. & 3:45-4:45 p.m. Non-members: $51* The pool closes 15 minutes before the building closes. Kids Only Nights (for grades 3-5) It’s Y time for kids in grades 3-5 to have the building to themselves! Swim, play basketball, use the fitness center or racquetball court clear of adults. Cost: $5 8-11 p.m. on Jan 10 & Feb 14 5-8 p.m. on Mar 14, Apr 11 & May 9 Giggle, Wiggle, Splash! (Parented Class - 6 months to three years) This parent-child program will have you moving and grooving with your child for floor exercise, followed by pool time to get both of you acclimated to the pool. The class is divided for attendance convenience. (Sessions II and III only) T (No discount) Giggle Wiggle 9:30-10 a.m. Members: $10.50 Non-members: $17.50 Splash 10-10:30 a.m. Members: $10.50 Non-members: $17.50 BABYSITTING This “drop-in” service for ages 8 and under is available to Y members and nonmembers while participating in classes or exercising. Members: $55 Non-members: $85 Session I Jan 5-Feb 21 ▪ Session II Feb 23-Apr 11 ▪ Session III Apr 13-May 30 SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support to our neighbors. “FREEBIES” AT THE Y 7th Grade Events (for all 7th graders in the county) The Harrison County YMCA is proud to offer all 7th graders in Harrison County a FREE membership to the Y through the school year (Oct 1-May 31). We encourage participation at the scheduled events specifically for them! 8-11 p.m. on Jan. 30 & Feb. 27, Mar. 27 & Apr 24 Mad Scientists Scientific Saturdays (for grades K-3) This program provides a series of stations offering exciting topics enabling each student to perform hands-on experiments. Mad Scientists will learn and be engaged in cool science experiments involving biology, chemistry, and genetics while under the supervision of adults. Pre-register by Jan. 17 for this FREE course. Demo Date: 1:00-2:30 p.m. on Jan 24. Teen Skills (for grades 9 - 12) This six-week course will provide teens with survival skills necessary to be independent. Topics include banking skills, i.e. balancing a checkbook, filling out a loan application; automotive maintenance, i.e. changing a tire and checking engine fluids; sewing, i.e. buttons, hems; self-defense; stress management; and home economics, i.e. laundry, cooking and cleaning. Pre-registration will be required for this FREE course. Dates to be announced. Celebration Place For Kids “The Celebration Place dream is to put Celebrate Recovery out of business by breaking the cycles of dysfunction in our families” – John Baker. This is a 52-week kids-friendly curriculum using kid-friendly methods in terms children can understand. Celebration Place gives kids: Hope for all the amazing things God has in store for them; Truths that help them overcome life’s challenges by learning to lean on Jesus; Joy as they embark on a wonderful yearlong journey of songs, games, videos, impactful experiences and great conversation, friendships with other children. This program is a collaboration with Celebrate Recovery and The United Methodist Temple Church. Activities will be held at the United Methodist Temple Church on the corner of Sycamore and Locust in downtown Clarksburg. Mondays starting January 5th . 6:00-8:00 p.m. Girls Circle (for grades 4 & 5) The concept of “forgive and forget” is sometimes lost on girls of this age, especially when the hurt is deep and the friendship is fractured. This seven-week program is designed to help girls in 4th and 5th grade learn new information that will help them apply conflict resolution skills to their own situations and encourage healthier relationship alternatives. Choosing friends wisely and being a good role model foster self esteem and confidence which can alleviate inner-conflicts that can begin in childhood and explode into violence years later. Topics include: What is a grudge?; What role have you played in grudges, past and present?; and, Selecting from a menu of behaviors that can resolve or avoid grudges. Interested? Contact Lynne Menendez, Program Director MARTIAL ARTS Family rates are available for all martial arts classes. Karate All levels of Chi-Do-Kwan Freestyle Karate are taught at the YMCA. The Introductory students (ages 6-8) learn the basic stances, blocks and kicks used in the ancient art form. The class helps develop concentration, coordination and agility. The Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced Class (ages 9 & up) continues skill development while learning basic Kata, Free-Sparring and Self Defense Techniques. Through training with Dr. Michael Bobic, participants will receive the benefits of sharpening mental discipline and engaging in physical activity, while learning about a sport with centuries of history and tradition. With emphasis on the techniques of the foil, students begin training with depth, practice, and control. The course covers safety and conditioning, as well as fundamental techniques, footwork, strategy, and rules. There is an equipment rental fee of $35 per session. Ages 10 and up. To ensure the safety of our classes, you are asked not to begin a class after the warm-up, or leave before the cool-down is completed. Tai Chi A slow-paced, graceful, low-impact form of exercise which can improve balance, increase flexibility, increase mobility, improve health, quality of life and psychological well-being, as well as decrease pain, fatigue and stiffness. T/TH 10:05-10:50 a.m. Non-members: $36.50 Barre Basics This ballet-based beginner class incorporates toning, sculpting and flexibility. No grace needed. T 7:15-8 p.m. Non-members: $20.75* Zumba Zumba is a fusion of Latin and International music-dance with routines that feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow dance steps to tone and sculpt the body. Good for any fitness level. It increases flexibility and vitality in a format that emphasizes gentle yoga postures and proper breathing.
