Thank you: We would like to thank everyone who helped out during the Christmas
ceremonies in our churches. A sincere thank you to all the volunteers who helped out in any
way. We would also like to extend our deep appreciation to the many volunteers who helped
out with delivering envelope boxes; and to all those who help throughout the year in our
Parish.
Trial Church Candles: We have decided to trial the Saint Killian Candle Burning System in
our churches here in Carbury. The standard candles we have been using over the years have
caused significant smoke damage to the walls, which is clearly visible in the churches. The
new candle burning system is smokeless and it is the safest, cleanest and most eco-friendly
way of burning candles. Each candle is secured in its own individual cup and once burned; the
remnants of the wax drop down into a tray of water inside the unit preventing wax spills on
both the candelabra and floor. Lighting candles on the new unit is far safer too and candles can
be lit without fear of being burned. A new candle is placed into an individual holder and
special gas lighters which have been provided are used to light the candle. The suggested
donation per candle is 50c.
Kilshanroe Old Graveyard: There have been a number of queries on the plots available in
Kilshanroe Cemetery. For more information, please call the Parish Office on 046 9553355.
Available Plot areas have been surveyed and layout drawings have been completed. A map of
the plots is available to view in Kilshanroe Church and also in the Parish Office. All money
raised from the sale of these plots will go to towards paying off the Parish Loan.
Kildare Suicide Bereavement Support Group: Trained counsellors offer a free, confidential,
non-denominational, 1-to-1 counselling service to those bereaved by or contemplating suicide.
There are no waiting lists, referrals not necessary, no donations required and no one is turned
away. There is a walk-in service every Thursday night at the Parish Centre in Ballycane, Naas,
from 8.00pm to 9.30pm or appointments can be made by phoning 045-895629 or 0868554852.

Carved in Stone: A Survey of Graveyards & Burial Grounds in Edenderry and Envrions
(including a number of old Graveyards in Carbury Parish) is available in the Parish Office
priced €15. The book was compiled and published by Edenderry Historical Society and offers
a comprehensive survey that may be of interest to anyone who enjoys local history or those
engaged in Family History Research.

St. Vincent De Paul first set up in Ireland in 1844. Now through a network
of over 9,500 volunteers, it is strongly committed to working for social justice
and advocates the creation of a more just and caring society for all concerned.
The aim of the St Vincent de Paul Society is to tackle poverty in all its forms through the
provision of practical assistance to those in need. The concept of need is broader than
financial hardship, so visiting the sick, the lonely, the imprisoned form a large proportion of
the Society's work. The Society operates in small groups, called "Conferences", based on
local parishes which meet regularly and their work is usually concentrated on local visiting .
Vatican Radio: Vatican Radio, the voice of the Pope & the church in dialogue with the
world, is available at www.radiovaticana.org. You can visit www.vatican.va for news

Please note that the diocesan guidelines for Godparents are that they must be baptised
and confirmed Catholics who are committed to sharing their faith with their godchild.
They must be 16 years old or more, one male and one female. It is permitted for a
baptised non-Catholic to act as a “witness” (instead of one godparent). If you require any
further information, please contact the Parish Office.

THE READINGS
The Minister of the Word goes to the ambo to read. The first reading is usually from the oldest part of
the Bible called the Old Testament. In the Easter Season the first reading comes from the New
Testament. The stories that we hear during the first reading are the same stories that Jesus would have
heard when he was a child. Some of the stories from the Old Testament are thousands of years old.
They remind us of how long people have been listening to God’s word. They also tell us how much
God loves us. Even though the stories are very old, they still have an important message for us today.
THE PSALMS: The psalms are different from the other readings from the Bible. They were
written as poems or songs. There are 150 psalms altogether. Sometimes the psalm is sung.
Between each verse there is a response which we are all invited to say. The psalm allows us to
reflect on the reading that we have just heard.
SECOND READING: This reading always comes from the part of the Bible called the New
Testament. The reading is taken from the books that are found directly after the Gospels of
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
OUR RESPONSE TO THE READINGS: At the end of each of the readings the Minister of the
Word finishes by saying, ‘The Word of the Lord’ and we all respond with the words, ‘Thanks be
to God.’ This is our way of saying thank you to God for these stories which help us to grow
together as members of God’s family.
Baptisms in Carbury Parish 2014
Lord, surround these children with goodness,
lead them in Your light each day.
Help them walk the path You’ve chosen,
Guide their steps along the way.
Teach them, Lord to trust Your wisdom,
With a faith from up above.
Keep them from all harm,
And bless them always
with Your grace and love.
Amen.
