at University of
Iowa Hospitals
and Clinics in
Iowa City.
Born Feb. 11, 1937, in Muscatine, she was the daughter of Maynard and Ruby Moots Krueger. On
March 12, 1955, she married Sherman “Max” Wagg in Muscatine. He
died July 5, 2007.
Mrs. Wagg was a homemaker
and worked for Pies on Parade and
Happy Joe’s. She also was a housekeeper at Pzazz.
She served as a candy striper
while living in Chicago as a young
woman.
She enjoyed baking, crocheting, word puzzles, playing games
with her family, playing computer
games and watching her favorite
shows, “Survivor,” “Big Brother”
and “Jeopardy.”
Survivors include one daughter,
Brenda Strothoff of Mediapolis;
two grandchildren; one sister, Bonnie Kerr of Mediapolis; and nieces
and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was
preceded in death by her parents,
one brother and four sisters.
The memorial service for Mrs.
Wagg will be at 2 p.m. Friday at
Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, with Pastor JudyAnn Morse
officiating, and visitation will be
from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with family
receiving friends from 1 to 2 p.m.
before the service. The body will
be cremated, and burial will be
at a later date in Keokuk National
Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit.
Moonlight stroll

WAPELLO — Louisa County
Conservation Board is inviting area
residents for a moonlight snowshoe hike from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 5 at
Langwood Education Center.
Participants will walk the trails
in the light of the full moon, then
warm up in the lodge with a woodburning stove, hot cocoa and a lesson on the Twelve Days of Christmas.
The fee for the program is $2
per person and $5 per family.
Snowshoes of all sizes will be
provided in addition to instructions on how to use them, but
officials said all are welcome no
matter the weather conditions.
Langwood Education Center
and Camp is located three miles
east of Grandview. Follow directional signs from the junction of
Iowa 92 and U.S. 61 at Grandview.

Student returning
to Antarctica

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — An Illinois doctoral student is spending
the holidays in West Antarctica
for a research trip.
Champaign native Tim Hodson said he’s looking forward to
long days and harsh conditions.
The geologist is a Ph.D. candidate
at Northern Illinois University.
Hodson was chosen to work
alongside top researchers in
West Antarctica for six weeks.
It’s a return visit. Hodson traveled to Antarctica last year to
collect samples from a subglacial lake.
Now, he’s working on a multiyear ice-drilling project led by
the National Science Foundation.

died Thursday,
Dec. 18, 2014, at
Florida Hospital in Orlando,
Fla.
Born Jan. 3,
1952, in Burlington, he was the son of Chester
and Barbara Miller Powell. He was
raised by his grandparents, Henry
Clay and Minnie Bell Miller. On
Feb. 11, 1978, he married Pamela
Pfadenhauer in Burlington.
Mr. Powell was a custodian for
Edward Stone Middle School and
worked at Pepsi Cola Bottling
Co. and Montgomery Ward for 29
years, mainly in the electronics
department.
He was a graduate of Southeastern Community College,
where he was a member of the college golf team.
He was a member of West Hill
United Methodist Church, a supporter of the Burlington Athletic
Booster Club and a Little League
coach.
He enjoyed time spent with family, the Three Stooges, Dr. Who,
electronics, movies and bowling.
He was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include his wife; one
son, Leigh Powell of Coralville;
one daughter, Elisa Roth of Burlington; two sisters, Vikki Ann
Smith of Iowa City and Mikki
Lynn Miller of Middletown; two
grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by
his parents, grandparents and two
brothers.
Family will receive friends
from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday in Prugh’s
Chapel.
Funeral services for Mr. Powell will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at
the chapel, with Pastor David
Bracht-Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Long Creek Cemetery in Danville. Casual attire is
requested for all services.
A memorial has been established for his grandchildren.

at

a.m. Sunday Dec.
21, 2014,
at Great River Hospice. Born
Oct. 21, 1931, he was the son
of Edwin Carl Schwenker Sr.
and Elsie Margaret Reichert.
He married Bernice Violet
Geffers Oct. 21, 1950. He
graduated from Burlington
Community High School in
1949.
In 1955, Bob worked as
a self-employed contractor;
in 1957, he was the original
developer of the Beaverdale
Heights. In 1958, Bob built the
family home in Beaverdale
and the Schwenker construction shop was in the home’s
basement. In 1967, he formed
Timbercraft Homes and constructed the shop which is
currently used by Standard of
Beaverdale as a warehouse.
In this building, the crew
built modular apartment
units which are still in use
on Van Weiss Blvd in West
Burlington. The apartment
units came out of the shop
complete with carpeting,
cabinets and drywall. The
apartments were transported
to the site with the second
story being set in place by
MZ Davis Crane. In 1968,
Standard Lumber Co. was
formed. Standard Lumber
was renamed Standard of
Beaverdale in 1975. For several years, Bob worked with
the Jobs Training Program
employing people with life
struggles. Bob was President
of Standard of Beaverdale
and remained active in the
business up until a year before his passing.
Bob was a member of
St. Luke’s United Church of
Christ, and the Burlington
Rotary club and a previous
member of the Local Carpenters Union. Bob enjoyed
working, being with his family,
mushrooming, hunting, and
like his wife, Bernie, he enjoyed traveling and their cats.
Survivors include three
sons, Kenneth Lee Schwenker and Daniel Charles (Debbie) Schwenker, both of Burlington, and Gregory Wayne
Schwenker (Brenda Smith) of
West Burlington; two daughters, Brenda Louise Carson
and Sharon Ann (Tony) Ashby, both of West Burlington;
seven grandchildren, Kathy,
David, Ben (Kate), and Matt
Schwenker, Chad Carson,
Andrea (Keith) Sollazzo and
Jennifer Schwenker; four
great-grandchildren; and two
step great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in
death by his wife; parents;
two brothers, John and
Edwin; one sister, Marion
Speak; daughter-in-law, Beth
Schwenker; and son-in-law,
Jim Carson.
The family will receive
friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Lunning
Chapel. The funeral service
for Mr. Schwenker will be at
2 p.m. Tuesday the 23rd, at
Lunning Chapel, with Pastor
Mark Schowalter officiating.
Interment will be in Aspen
Grove cemetery. A memorial has been established for
Great River Hospice House,
