You want what's best for your team in getting them the experience and exposure they deserve. The season only has so many competitions available and you want to make the most of each year. It's come to our attention that when making these important decisions, some AD's and coaches have gotten the false impression that the ICCA and IHSA either have conflicting goals or conflicting schedules and, as a result, they feel like they need to choose one or the other. This is definitely not the case! In fact, the ICCA works hard to accommodate the IHSA's schedule and to offer opportunities that can expand knowledge and experience for coaches and athletes alike. When the IHSA Cheer State Series was developed, IHSA and ICCA worked together to develop a championship. The IHSA staff administers the tournament and interprets and applies the rules set by the membership. The IHSA’s goal is to run quality championships, and the IHSA realizes that the input of experts in the field is necessary to conduct their numerous state finals. Hence, the IHSA works in collaboration with ICCA leadership much like the relationship with other sport/activity coaches associations. Although the relationship is often misunderstood, IHSA and ICCA are cooperative organizations. Dual membership is not only possible, but encouraged. ICCA provides opportunities for teams to gain 2013 All-State Team Creating Opportunities • IHSA and ICCA have always sustained a beneficial relationship for secondary athletics. • IHSA is the organization to which member high schools in Illinois belong, their respective principals acting as the voting members. • ICCA is a supportive coaches association. The organization provides resources to IHSA in the form of rule interpreters, clinicians, liaisons, etc. ICCA also extends important services to coaches such as training, conferences and competitions. • IHSA and ICCA collaborations create opportunities for coaches and athletes. experience, and these opportunities align with IHSA guidelines and annual ICCA’s mission is to offer education to coaches and their teams in all aspects of cheerleading, from instruction to competition. Membership in the ICCA brings experience in: • COACHING EDUCATION & MENTORING • SAFETY • SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES • RECOGNITION OF ATHLETIC & SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENTS • COMPETITION IHSA & NFHS rules followed schedules. In this way, ICCA is more than a resource for sharing expertise. It’s the grassroots of highly competitive programs. For the full ICCA and IHSA article, visit the ICCA website! (http://cheericca.org/ihsa-cooperation) Though reasons for entering the IHSA state series or ICCA competitions vary, each IHSA member school can benefit from the opportunities these mutually supportive organizations produce. This way, every high school can match its competitive goals to its interscholastic spirit program. 2013 All-State Team Chloe Alexander Columbia Dayna Burnett Carmi-White County Alia Childress Rich Central Tyler Crawford Woodlawn Lanie Hemmingsen Normal West Brianne Hodgson Paris Cheyenne Jefferson Rich Central Tony LaFata Columbia Jacob O’Connor Belvidere North Kenley Masterson Carmi-White County Cassidy Neal Benton Lacy Jo Solomon Mattoon Stephanie Wiechmann Normal West Drake Williams Paris “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.
