Families are where we learn about who we are. It is where tradition and morality are first introduced to us. Families come in many shapes and sizes. Our need to belong to a family or to be a part of something greater than ourselves is natural to our condition as human beings. It was important to Jesus as well. He needed to be nurtured just as we need to be nurtured. Mary and Joseph took a great risk by allowing themselves to be the parents of Jesus. Their faith gave them the courage to accept this great responsibility and their faith laid the foundation for Jesus to understand his call and his mission. Our parish community is a family rooted in faith. Everyone needs a family and everyone has a family if we understand ourselves to be the adopted daughters and sons of God. We are brothers and sisters one to another. On Thursday we will celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. Mary is our mother too. She is our patroness, our protector. Please join us for our Eucharistic celebration in honor of Mary on Wednesday evening and Thursday during the day. Thursday is also New Year’s Day. I wish you and your families a very happy, healthy and holy New Year. Page Three We have completed our first round through Father Barron’s video series on Catholicism and those who participated were very impressed by both Father Barron’s explanations of our Catholic Faith and the rich introduction to Catholic culture that the videos do through the art and music of both the Church in the past and today’s Church throughout the world. Several parishioners have indicated an interest in doing this series at another time. Would anyone like to host a small group in their home to view and discuss the videos. There are ten videos in the set and the group could meet weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly depending on their interest. Call Father Pat if you are interested? (Office phone is 201 567 2528) We also had our first monthly “Afternoon at the Movies” with the C.S. Lewis biographical story, Shadowlands. Next month’s film is one that Pope Francis has said is his “favorite.” (He has said this about a couple of different films—like most of us he hates to limit himself.) It is Gabriel Axel’s 1987 story Babette’s Feast. As soon as we pick a date we will let you know more. The Knights of Columbus Free Throw contest will be held in the gym on January 10th at 4:30 pm. The Knights of Columbus works to keep Christ in Christmas! Are you a Knight? Why not? With Love, Fr.
