Unpacking the Autoloader
Note: The term “Autoloader” applies to both the Autostar II and the Protégé II. “Autostar II” and
“Protégé II” will be used only to refer to either autoloader specifically.
•
Inspect the shipping container for damage. Notify the shipper if there is damage. Keep the
equipment’s shipping container in the event you want to send the unit(s) back for
upgrades or servicing.
•
To remove the Rimage equipment, follow the illustrated instructions located on the
shipping container.
•
Lift the autoloader out of the box carefully. Do not grab the lift column or door when
pulling it up from the crate.
•
Inspect all parts for any signs of damage. Notify the shipper if you find damage.
•
Use a solid, level surface to set the autoloader on.
•
If the carton was stored in a cold environment, allow the autoloader to reach room
temperature before turning on the power.
•
Either an Everest II Printer or a Prism Printer is shipped with the autoloader. The
printer is shipped in a separate box. Carefully remove the printer from the other box and
allow the printer to reach room temperature.
Unpacking Other Cartons
•
Remove all parts and check them against the parts list in this guide.
•
Remove the plastic packaging material from the components and discard along with the
packing boxes.
•
Remove the foam pieces from under the top cover of the Prism Printer.
•
See Everest Unpacking Instructions to remove internal shipping pieces and the shipping

Installation Requirements
Install the autoloader and Control Center in a clean, dust-free, smoke-free environment.
Weight
A complete system with autoloader, Monitor, Keyboard with Mouse, and Control Center
weighs approximately 200 pounds. Be sure the table or surface where it will be permanently
kept is capable of supporting this weight.
Access
In addition to having easy access to the keyboard, ensure that:
•
users have easy access to the front of the Control Center and the autoloader
•
the autoloader’s door can be opened (to the right as you face the autoloader)
•
the carousel can be easily removed from the autoloader.
Position the autoloader close enough to the Control Center so the cables can be connected.
Temperature
Provide a climate-controlled environment where temperatures are maintained at
60°- 77° F (15.5°- 25° C), limited by the recorder; and the relative humidity is regulated at 50–
80%, non-condensing.
Electrical Outlets
The autoloader, Control Center, and Monitor must be electrically grounded. Three outlets are
required. The autoloader is delivered with a three-prong power cord that must be plugged
into a three-hole, grounded electrical outlet.
WARNING
Proper grounding is necessary to prevent users from being exposed to a serious shock
hazard and to prevent damage to the equipment.

Setting Up
This chapter explains:
•
Preparing the Autoloader – page 12
•
Installing the Printer – page 13
•
Preparing the System Layout – page 15
11
Preparing the Autoloader
This section explains how to prepare the autoloader.
Procedure
1. Place the autoloader on a table that can hold at least 200 pounds, and with enough space
to open the front door. Also, keep in mind that you will need to position the autoloader
very close to the Control Center, as the Firewire connection cables are limited in length (2
meters).
2. Open the front door of the autoloader, then remove the Shipping Foam inserted above the
Carousel.
3. Remove the tape from the Mailbox Feed Tray.
1 – Lift Arm
3 – Carousel
2 – Shipping Foam
4 – Mailbox Feed Tray
4. Using a diagonal cutter, remove the plastic tie wrap that is around the pulley belt at the
top of the lift assembly. (A spare tie-wrap is provided if you need to reship the
autoloader. It is taped to the inside of the door.)
Caution
Be careful not to cut any of the surrounding cable or belt.
1 – Tie-wrap
2 – Belt
5. Go to “Installing the Printer” section on the next page.
12
Installing the Printer
1. If a Prism Printer is being installed, go to step 6. If an Everest Printer is being installed,
go to step 2.
2. Before the Everest Printer can be installed, the unpacking directions that came with the
printer must be completed first. Refer to the unpacking directions.
3. Set the AC Voltage Selector Switch on the back of the Everest II Printer to match the AC
outlet voltage.
WARNING – 220/115 VAC
Set the AC Voltage Selector Switch to match the AC voltage from the source before
plugging the unit into the AC outlet.
4. Set the Mode Switch to position 1 with a small flat-blade screwdriver. The recessed line on
the switch indicates the selected mode.
5. Remove the Shipping Screw from the back of the printer and install it in the Retaining
Hole as shown below. The shipping screw prevents the drawer from moving during
shipment.
1 – AC Voltage Selector Switch
2 – Mode Switch
4 - Remove Shipping Screw from here
13
3 - Recessed Line
5 - Retaining Hole
6. Open the Autoloader’s side cover.
7. Set the printer on the Printer Plate so the printer feet drop into the Rounded Slots of the
Printer Plate as shown below. The printer alignment will be checked later in the
installation procedure. Cables will be connected later.
1 – Printer Plate
2 – Rounded Slots
3 – Side Cover
8. If the printer does not have the print ribbon(s) installed, refer to the printer user guide.
9. Go to “Preparing the System Layout”, page 15.
14
Preparing the System Layout
The Control Center is the publishing system’s computer and must be placed near enough to
the autoloader so that the cables can be connected. A second autoloader may also be
connected to the Control Center.
Note: The figure above shows the dimensions for and Autostar II. The Protégé II has a height of
29.6” (75.1 cm). Each autoloader has an open door depth of 39.0” (99.1 cm).
There should also be sufficient room around each autoloader to allow the door to be opened
and the carousel to be removed.
Procedure
1. Place the Control Center in a close location.
2. Place the monitor in the intended location.
3. Place the keyboard in front of the monitor.
4. Place the mouse next to the keyboard.
5. Power off the Control Center (at the front), the autoloader (at the back), and the monitor
(at the front).
6. Go to Chapter 3, “Connecting the Components” on page 16.

Connecting the Autoloaders
Find all of the cables needed for the Control Center, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and the
autoloader. Three AC outlets are required.
1. Connect the USB Cable to the Control Center, and then to the rear of the autoloader.
2. Connect the Serial Control Cable (RS-232) to the COM 1 port on the Control Center, and
then to the rear of the autoloader.
3. If two or more autoloaders are to be connected, the PC in this case has multiple serial
cable connections. Connect the second serial cable to the second autoloader’s serial control
connection.
4. Connect the AC power cord to the back of the autoloader, and then plug it into a grounded
electrical outlet. Do not power the system on yet.
5. Connect the Firewire cable to the Control Center, and then to the rear of the autoloader.
1 – USB Connection
3 – AC Power
2 – Serial Control Connection
4 – Firewire Connection
6. Connect the remaining autoloaders to the Control Center. The Control Center has more
cable connections based on the system that was ordered.
7. Connect the AC power cord to Control Center, and then to the grounded electrical outlet.
8. Connect the keyboard cable to the rear of the Control Center.
9. Connect the mouse cable to the rear of the Control Center.
10. Connect the monitor cable to the rear of the Control Center.
11. Connect the AC power cord to the monitor, and then plug it into the grounded electrical
outlet.
12. Go to “Connecting the Everest Printer” on page 18, or “Connecting the Prism Printer” on
