It combines industry-leading high availability, I/O management, quality of service, data integrity validation, storage tiering, and data security with an open application platform. HYPERMAX features the first real-time, non-disruptive storage hypervisor that manages and protects embedded services by extending VMAX high availability to services that traditionally would have run external to the array. It also provides direct access to hardware resources to maximize performance. HYPERMAX runs on top of the Dynamic Virtual Matrix leveraging its scale out flexibility of cores, cache, and host interfaces. The embedded storage hypervisor reduces external hardware and networking requirements, delivers higher levels of availability and dramatically lower latency. Network Layer Network Layer Hardware The Cisco Nexus 5548UP Switch, Cisco Nexus 5596 Switch, and Cisco Nexus 9396PX Switch in the network layer provide 10 GE connectivity using SFP+ modules for all Vblock System production traffic. The Nexus 9396PX is ACI-Ready to take full advantage of the policy-driven services and infrastructure automation features of ACI. Vblock System 740 contains two Cisco MDS switches to provide Fibre Channel (FC) connectivity between the compute and storage layer components. These switches comprise two separate fabrics and do not interconnect. Each connection from the storage components provides 16 Gb of bandwidth. Cisco UCS fabric interconnects provide a FC port channel of four 8 Gb connections (32 Gb bandwidth) to each fabric. This can be increased to eight connections for 64 Gb bandwidth or 16 connections for 128 Gb bandwidth. Each Vblock System 740 requires a pair of Cisco Nexus 3064-T Switches to connect all of the management ports. Each Cisco Nexus 3064-T Switch provides 48 ports of 100/1000/10G twisted pair connectivity and four quad, small form-factor, pluggable (QSFP) ports. The 48 posts on each switch provide management interface connectivity for all devices in the Vblock System. The management interfaces on the Cisco Nexus 3064-T Switch are connected to the customer network for out-of-band access. Virtualization Layer Virtualization components VMware vSphere is the virtualization platform that provides the foundation for the private cloud. The core VMware vSphere components are the VMware vSphere Hypervisor ESXi and VMware vCenter Server for management. VMware vSphere 5.5 includes a Single Sign-on (SS) component. The hypervisors are deployed in a cluster configuration and can scale up to 32 nodes per cluster. Clusters can support thousands of VMs. The cluster allows dynamic allocation of resources, such as CPU, memory, and storage. The cluster also provides workload mobility and flexibility with the use of VMware vMotion and Storage vMotion technology. Virtual Networks Advanced Management Platform (AMP-2) offers choice in virtual networking with the Nexus 1000V and the VMware Virtual Distributed Switch (VDS). © 2014 VCE Company, LLC. All rights reserved. Virtual networking in Vblock Systems can be managed by the Cisco Nexus 1000V distributed virtual switch or the VMware VDS. The Cisco Nexus 1000V Series Switch ensures consistent, policy-based network capabilities to all servers in the data center by allowing policies to move with a virtual machine during live migration. Alternatively, virtual networking in a Vblock System can be managed by a VMware VDS with comparable features to the Cisco Nexus 1000V where applicable. The VMware VDS option consists of both a VMware Standard Switch (VSS) and a VMware VDS and uses a minimum of four uplinks presented to the hypervisor. The Cisco Nexus 1000V and VMware VDS use intelligent network Class of Service (CoS) marking and Quality of Service (QoS) policies to appropriately shape network traffic according to workload type and priority. Management Layer VCE Vison Intelligent Operations The VCE Vision software suite provides an integrated set of software products for managing a data center. The VCE Vision software suite is the first software suite to provide an intelligent solution to the problem of managing operations in a converged infrastructure environment. These tools enable and simplify converged operations by dynamically providing a high level of intelligence into a customer’s existing management toolset. The VCE Vision software suite enables VCE customers and third-party consumers to know that the Vblock System exists, where it is located, and what components it contains. It reports on the health or operating status of the Vblock System. It also reports on how compliant the Vblock System is with a VCE Release Certification Matrix and the VCE Security Standards. The VCE Vision software suite effectively acts as a mediation layer between your system and the management tools that are already in place. The software allows for intelligent discovery by providing a continuous, near real-time perspective of your compute, network, storage, and virtualization resources as a single object—ensuring that your management tools reflect the most current state of your Vblock System. VCE Vision software provides the Vblock System information natively through VMware vCenter Server and vCenter Operations Manager. Advanced Management Platform – AMP-2HA AMP-2HA provides a single management point for Vblock Systems and provides the ability to Run the Core and VCE Optional Management Workloads Monitor and manage Vblock System health, performance, and capacity Provide network and fault isolation for management Eliminate resource overhead on Vblock Systems The Core Management Workload is the minimum set of required management software to install, operate, and support a Vblock System. This includes all hypervisor management, element managers, vitual networking components (Cisco Nexus 1000V or Vmware VDS), and VCE Vision Intelligent Operations software. The VCE Optional Management Workload are non-Core Management Workloads, whose primary purpose is to manage components within a Vblock System. The list includes but is not limited to Data Protection, security, or storage management tools such as EMC Avamar Administrator, EMC InsightIQ for Isilon, and VMware vCNS appliances (vShield Edge/Manager). AMP-2HA is available with one, two, or three physical servers. All options use their own resources to run workload without consuming resources. Cabinets Overview Within each Vblock System 740, the compute and network layer components are distributed within Vblock Systems cabinets. Distributing the components in this manner balances out the power draw and reduces the size of the power outlet units (POUs) that are required. Each cabinet has a capacity for physical dimensions such as weight, heat dissipation, power draw, RU space, and receptacle count. This flexible design enables Vblock System upgrades or expansion as capacity needs increase. Each cabinet includes a Panduit SmartZone™ Gateway that aggregates multiple PDUs and sensors and connects via a single switch port. In addition, SmartZone™ Temp Sensors and Door Sensors provide enhanced environment data, and alerts of excessive heat/humidity or water presence. The © 2014 VCE Company, LLC.
