Advent for Kids - First Presbyterian Church
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, ALBEMARLE December 2014 Dear Friends, Advent is a season of yearning. The words of the ancient carol speak of the longing: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear. The Old Testament prophets express the same longing: O that you would tear open the Heavens and come down, so that the Mountains would quake at your presence and The nation tremble at your presence. (Isaiah 64:1-‐2) We seek, in worship, to focus on the sense of longing that belongs to the people of God as we await the birth of Jesus and the coming again of Christ. While the Christmas season is primarily a joyful time, it can also be a difficult reminder of the losses we have experienced. For some people, the absence of loved ones or the reminder of other losses can be painful. This is a service of healing and wholeness designed to acknowledge the complex array of emotions of the Christmas season. We seek to give voice to the pain as well as to the joy of Christmas. Please join us in the chapel for this contemplative, reverent service. !!! ALTERNATIVE GIFTS !!! Advent is a time to expect, once again, the birth of Jesus. Sometimes we get caught up in the frenetic shopping that has become a pre-Christmas custom in America. If you would like to simplify your life and make your gifts more meaningful, consider purchasing gift cards for some of those special people on your list by donating to several good causes which our church supports. This year, Alternative Gift cards are offered for donations directed to: T he Butterfly House, Homes of Hope/T he Community Inn, Zambia W ell W ater Project, & T he Community C are C linic T he minimum gift is $10 per card and cards will be available before and after worship on Sundays, December 7 and December 14. At other times, check with the church office. ***************************************************************************** COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS DINNER THE STANLY COUNTY SENIOR CENTER (283 NORTH THIRD STREET) THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25 11:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M. Jim Hesley 605 N. 7th Street Albemarle, NC 28001 704-985-4271 [email protected] I have lived in Albemarle for 55 years since my family moved from Philadelphia when my dad was transferred here from Jeffries processors. I eventually followed him into the textile business where I worked for 34 years, the last 18 as president of a small dyestuff and chemical company until 2009 when I retired. I live on 7th Street with my stepson, Daniel (who also attends First Presbyterian) plus 2 dogs and 2 cats. Many of you know my Zoe, as I take her with me everywhere. My son, Bubba, his wife, Jenny, and their daughter, Jordan, live nearby, and I spend a lot of time enjoying them. I enjoy playing golf, traveling with the little puppies, and cooking. My wife, Becky, and I have spent the past 14 years summering on a boat in Northern Michigan to escape (sorry!) the heat and humidity of an otherwise wonderful North Carolina, our retirement home now for 15 years. I retired in 1999 from an air transportation company based in Ohio for which I had worked for some 24 years as Vice President of Operations. We have three grandchildren, two in San Diego and one in Chicago, and love to travel to see them. My primary hobby/passion is golf and I also enjoy photography. Trusty Travelers (Grades K-‐3rd) will be working on their Mwandi well project fundraiser called Roots to Water this month and will be selling those at First Family night and a couple of Sundays during the month. If you have not read this wonderful book, we encourage you to check out a copy and join us in reading this heartwarming story. This Newbery Honor Book thoughtfully explores Hollis' life within the foster care system. During this Advent season, we will begin to explore ways in which we can bring joy to others. For our monthly outing, we will visit The Children's Theatre of Charlotte for a performance of Scrooge in order to discover what this classic story has to teach us about Ebenezer Scrooge's spiritual growth. YOUTH CUBS Cub lessons in November centered around three themes. The first theme was God Blessed Us By Making Us All Special. He loves and knows us. The children made shape people, playdough people, and painted. The second theme centered around our being kind to one another. To honor God, we must show love to each other. The story of Joseph and his coat of many colors was told as a flannelboard story. We decorated a paper coat and acted out the story with a robe of many colors. Our third theme was that of Thanksgiving. The story told to illustrate this was the account of the ten lepers who were heald by Jesus, yet only one returned to give thanks. The children learned that we should remember to give thanks as God has blessed us all. Thanksgiving books, songs, and poems were added along with a turkey art project and thankful bracelets. December will bring month long lessons on the birth of Jesus. Submitted by: Lynn Poplin, Youth Cub Leader Hurray For Breakfast Bunch!!!
