Dear Parishioners,
Happy New Year to all of you!!!!!
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy
Family in Nazareth! Mention of family reminds us that
Pope Francis is coming in September to Philadelphia
to be part of the Conference on The Family. The accent throughout the year I believe is going to be very
much on family life. All of us must participate. How
can we? By focusing on building relationship within
our own family. Our recipe should include a strong
commitment to a spirit of forgiveness. All of us need
to build patterns of kindness and respect.
We need to lengthen the fuse wire within us so that
we do not get angry so easily or so frequently. All of
us are on the team of our family which says that all of
us are active participants in the life of the team and
must be willing to play our part on the team's activities. One of the things that we should try to change is
getting away from the spirit that says "I don't like
that". The common good of our family is primary and
many times we have to engage in things and we have
to participate in ways that may not be our personal
favorite but, if it is for the common good, we should
do it and do it cheerfully. When we are in "I don't like
that" mode we are considering ourselves and not the
greater good of our family.
It is time to wrap up our participation in Bishop O'Connell's 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please help us
to reach our goals in both parishes. We have reached
our pledge goal but our payment back from the diocese, of course, is based on payment of pledges. Thank
you to all who have paid to date and a word of encouragement to those who graciously pledged and are
still paying them off.
God bless all of you as we embark on this New Year
together as Church!

A child born in a manger, heralded by angels, visited by shepherds, worshipped by kings: how could
one day be sufficient to tell this story and
allow time to savor the meaning of it all?
This is why we need at least twelve days
of Christmas.
The traditional twelve days of Christmas
began on Christmas Day and ended on the Feast of the
Epiphany (Jan 6). But now the Church sets aside almost 3
weeks for the Christmas Season. Here’s how the special days
of the Season fall this year.
Christmas Day (Dec 25): On this day we celebrate the
Birth of Jesus and how grateful we are that He came to dwell
among us and redeem us. This day gets the Christmas Season
off to a terrific start.
Feast of the Holy Family (Dec 28): What happened to
Jesus, Mary & Joseph after that idyllic moment in the Manger
was over? And how does that translate into lessons for all of
us?
Mary, the Holy Mother of God (Jan 1): This is one of the
3 Marian Feasts that the Church has designated as a Holy Day
of Obligation. On this day the Gospel calls us to reflect along
with Mary and the Shepherds on the meaning of Christ’s birth.
Epiphany of the Lord (Jan 4): On Epiphany, the Feast of
the Three Kings, we remember that Christ came to redeem
ALL peoples.
Baptism of the Lord (Jan 11): The Christmas Season comes
to an end with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This event
marks the point at which Jesus moves from the obscure life of
a carpenter’s son, to begin his public ministry as a teacher; and
ultimately it leads to His death and resurrection and our salvation.

This week’s WORD
FAMILY
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family.The story of Mary
and Joseph caring for Jesus spiritually, mentally, and physically is expressed in this story. What is the message for us?
In the Catholic tradition, most infants are baptized shortly after
birth. We know what this means for the infant, they are welcomed
into the family of Jesus Christ and freed from original sin. But it
also has important significance for the parents as well.Through the
celebration of Baptism, parents promise to provide for the spiritual
needs of their child, just as much as the physical, mental, and emotional needs.
The Holy Family becomes an example for our own “holy families.”
Following their example, we are to center our homes on God’s
ways and his plans for each of us. Our homes, our families are called
to be “God-centered.” Allowing God to be ever present in our
homes gives us the ability to see the pathways that will lead us to
the life God has planned for us.
This week, we invite families to recommit to becoming God-centered in the ways you relate to one another, support one another
and affirm the value of each other.

One Family in Faith, One Family in Mission
Our St. James RE children are busy filling their MCA (Missionary
Children Association) boxes. Children were asked to save their
coins and dollars to help children worldwide by providing clean
drinking water, medicine, blankets, rice, mosquito nets for classrooms, and Bibles. Filled boxes will be collected the week of January 19th.Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
MAGNIFIKID – a great way for your children to follow along
with the Mass and the readings. Available each week in the St.
James Gathering Area. Look for it, take it into Mass and then take
it home.
RCIA – Ritual
Just as the Mary and Joseph followed the Jewish ritual of presenting their child, Jesus, in the Temple, ritual is important in our faith.
Rituals are deeply traditional because they embody the inherited
values and meanings of a given historical community. They remind
a community of who they are. Ritual spells out what it means to belong to a group. For example, we become hospitable not by analyzing hospitality but by greeting guests, offering them the sign of
peace, washing their feet, serving them food, and adoring Christ’s
presence in them. The rituals in our Catholic faith, especially in
the RCIA process, summon us to responses of faith and selfcommitment by our very use of them. The goal of ritual is not to
produce a meaning, but to produce an outcome – a person redefined by grace as God’s own welcoming heart and hand. RCIA
(the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is filled with ritual. It is
an experiential process which allows the Holy Spirit to work
within the person and through the community. It is a journey of
faith, marked by ritual and celebrated by all of the faithful.

A HOPEFUL NEW YEAR
“Oh, that I might have my request, that God would grant
what I hope for.” Job 6:8
Once again, we have come to that time of year when we resolve
to change – our lives, our habits, our behaviors. Maybe this is the
year we’ll be able to stop smoking or work on losing that extra
weight we gained over the holiday season. Maybe this will be the
year when we recognize that our addiction has gotten out of
hand and we need to do something about it.
The St. James Hope ministry can help in the areas of addictions
and compulsive behaviors. Our display in the Gathering Area has
information of where to get help, as well as information on a
number of different topics in this area. In addition, in our Resource Room, you can find a number of books, also relating to
these topics. And, as usual, we invite you to call on us, in confidence.
The most important thing to remember is that God wants us to
be happy; and he wants us to ask him for his help and his guidance as we strive to become the person God wants us to be.

ADDICTION — A DISEASE NOT A DISGRACE
JUST A REMINDER – if you’re drinking on New
Year’s Eve, let someone else do the driving.
Surviving the Holidays — Where are you on your journey to
building a new life after the end of your marriage? No matter
where you are in the journey, we can offer help and resources to
assist anyone going through this process. Our leaders have had
training and experience in facilitating a support group that deals
with the pain and emotions of going through a separation and divorce.
Make the time to attend our next meeting which will be on Monday, January 12th. Meetings are held on the 2nd Monday from 79pm in the Resource Room. The topics covered are very
informative, and always generate much discussion. Some come
just to listen. Newcomers are always welcome. If you or anyone
you know is interested in learning more about the group, please

The St. James Miryam Ministry has begun meeting in the
Family Center library from 10 to 11:30 on every Thursday. We
are focusing on prayer, starting each meeting with Centering
Prayer. After that we are using the book, Just Because by Melannie Svobda, SND. Each Chapter starts with an original poem that
invites us to pray our experiences.

Dear Fellow Parishioners of St James,
On behalf of the St. James Finance Council, I wanted to share the summary below of the
Parish’s revenue and expenses for the 2013-14 Fiscal Year, which ended in June 2014. Key
highlights:
As shown on the attached report, Parish expenses are cumulatively down -2.4%
over the past two years. The Council has worked hard to smartly control expenses and we finished the year with a modest surplus of $11,434. We have been
working with the Buildings and Facilities committee to identify and get caught up
on deferred maintenance, and are setting aside the $11,000 surplus from FY 201314 for anticipated building and facilities needs;
This is part of the Council’s focus on better planning for major building repairs
and upgrades to our facilities. Our goal is to cover these expenses within the
Parish’s general operating budget vs. having to make special appeals to the Parish; Weekly collections increased modestly in 2013-14 from their low in the prior
fiscal year, but total Parish income remains ~$14,000 below where we finished
two years ago. We appreciate your continued good stewardship and gifts of time
and treasure to St James, and would humbly ask that you consider increasing your
weekly giving in the New Year. To make your on-going giving more convenient,
please consider signing up for our electronic giving program — there is a link for
this at the bottom left of the St James home page. Please go to http://www.stjames-nj.org
Finally, you will note that Fr. Jim made a sizable donation to St James as part of
his bequest. We are setting this aside towards replacing the Church’s roof, which
is expected over the next 2-3 years.
