PUDDLE, POTHOLE, PORTAL OCTOBER 2, 2014 – JANUARY 5, 2015 Olga Balema, Joachim Bandau, Camille Blatrix, Teresa Burga, Antoine Catala, Abigail DeVille, Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys, Judith Hopf, Jamian Juliano-Villani, Allison Katz, Mark Leckey, Maria Loboda, Win McCarthy, Danny McDonald, Marlie Mul, Mick Peter, Chadwick Rantanen, Lucie Stahl, Saul Steinberg, Keiichi Tanaami, Lina Viste Grønli, and Jordan Wolfson. Puddle, pothole, portal is co-curated by Ruba Katrib, Curator, SculptureCenter, and artist Camille Henrot. With play and curiosity, we can test boundaries and decipher our space. Bumping into objects, pushing them over, hopping over figments, falling down, we are clumsy and mischievous, like children in a world of new technologies. Incorporating a sense of wonder and humor, concepts surrounding animation and cartooning are expanded into an exhibition that enacts a similar sort of hysteria around flatness and depth in relation to technologies, real and illusory spaces—physical, virtual, internal, and external. Thinking through early 20th century cartoons, the kaleidoscopic drawings of Saul Steinberg, the innovative and self-reflexive film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and other children's entertainment, the exhibition explores the coexistence of disparate elements within shared spaces. Gags betray complex meanings and sociopolitical satire, and unrelated objects, locales, and avatars interact in the same dimension. The works on view transcend the categories that separate drawing from sculpture, the human from the nonhuman, and the animated from the static, while experiences of technological devices and flatness lead to fantastic and absurd implications for objects and space. As screens, passageways, and shadows populate both physical and virtual realms, we question whether they are reflections or traces of the objective world, obstructions, fantasies, or entryways into other realms. ARAYA RASDJARMREARNSOOK JANUARY 25 – MARCH 30, 2015 SculptureCenter is pleased to present Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, the Thai artist's first major retrospective in the United States. Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook (born 1957 in Trat, Thailand) is one of the most prominent artists working in Southeast Asia. The exhibition will showcase over 20 artworks spanning two decades of the artist's career, and will include video, sculpture, photography, and some of her better-known works, as well as those that have rarely been viewed, especially in the United States. Rasdjarmrearnsook is also producing new sculptures for the exhibition. Working with psychologically rich materials, Rasdjarmrearnsook considers a wide range of subjects that have existed in marginal spaces, including women, the deceased, the insane, and animals. She creates complex narratives that confront societal structures of power and pedagogy. Concerned with systems of language and communication, Rasdjarmrearnsook makes earnest attempts to converse with subjects who don't speak in languages that are comprehended by or even acknowledged by mainstream society. For the past 25 years, her videos and installations have been regularly shown throughout the world. Rasdjarmrearnsook represented Thailand at the Venice Biennale (2005) and has been featured in many international exhibitions including Documenta 13 (2013), the Sydney Biennale (2010), the Gwangju Biennale (2006), the Istanbul Biennial (2003), the Johannesburg Biennial (1995), and the Carnegie International (2004). Rasdjarmrearnsook is also a respected professor in Thailand's leading art program at Chiang Mai University, where she has recently spearheaded one of the first media and theory departments in the country. IN PRACTICE JANUARY 25 – APRIL 14, 2015 Annual open-call exhibition for emerging artists with a focus on the production of new work. Guest curated by SculptureCenter’s 2014–15 Curatorial Fellow Jess Wilcox. ERIKA VERZUTTI MAY 2 – AUGUST 3, 2015 Erika Verzutti will present a new body of sculptures and images in her first solo exhibition in New York City. Working between synthetic and organic materials, Verzutti creates hybrid objects and situations that interrogate relationships between forms and bodies. Verzutti (born 1971 in São Paulo, Brazil) is based in São Paulo and has had solo exhibitions at the Tang Museum at Skidmore College (2014) and the Centro Cultural São Paulo (2013). Group exhibitions include the 56th Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art (2013), the Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2013), and the 11th Biennale de Lyon, Lyon, France (2011). MAGALI REUS MAY 2 – JULY 6, 2015 Magali Reus will present a new body of work co-commissioned by SculptureCenter, the Hepworth Wakefield in Yorkshire, England and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, Italy. Reus’ exhibition will continue her exploration into the uncanny qualities of products and the creation of narratives around objects. This will be Reus’ first solo museum exhibition in the United States. Reus (born 1981 in The Hague, The Netherlands) is based in Amsterdam and London. Recent group exhibitions include nature after nature, Fridericianum, Kassel (2104), Post/Post Minimal, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Switzerland (2014), and Superficial Hygiene, De Hallen Harlaam, The Netherlands (2014). MICHAEL E. SMITH MAY 2 – AUGUST 3, 2015 Michael E. Smith will present new works created specifically for SculptureCenter’s lower level galleries, his first solo museum exhibition in the United States. These new sculptures will further Smith’s investigation into the inherent, yet latent, qualities of materials through various means of decay and degradation. Smith (born 1977 in Detroit) is based in Hopkinton, NH has had solo exhibitions at La Triennale in Milan (2014), CAPC museé d’art contemporain de Bordeax (2013), and CAM St. Louis (2011). Recent group exhibitions include humanonhumain at Foundation D’Enterprise Ricard, Paris (2014), Being Here & Being Thus. Sculpture, Object & Stage at Frankfurter Kunstverein (2014), Realization is Better than Anticipation at MOCA Cleveland (2013), A Disagreeable Object at SculptureCenter (2012), and the Whitney Biennial (2012). ANTHEA HAMILTON SEPTEMBER 19 – DECEMBER, 2015 Anthea Hamilton will feature new and existing works for her first solo museum exhibition in the United States. Investigating cultural appropriation and pop culture, Hamilton mines countercultures (such as disco in the 1970s) and their entrance into the mainstream. Hamilton questions the representation of cultural phenomenon through popular media through her sculptures and videos. Hamilton (born 1978 in London) is based in London and has had solo exhibitions at firstsite in Colchester, England (2012), the Tanks at the Tate Modern (2012), and the Chisenhale, London (2009). Recent group exhibitions include Don’t You Know Who I Am? – Art After Identity Politics at MuKHA, Antwerp (2014), the 10th Gwangju Biennale (2014), the Glasgow International (2014), and Better Homes (2013) at SculptureCenter. GABRIEL SIERRA SEPTEMBER 19 – DECEMBER, 2015 Gabriel Sierra will feature a new intervention into SculptureCenter’s lower level galleries for his first solo museum exhibition in New York City. Working with architecture and design, Sierra creates sculptural frameworks that use narrative as a guiding principle for reconfiguring space and objects. Sierra (born 1975, San Juan Nepomuceno, Colombia) is based in Bogotá and has had solo exhibitions at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (2015) and Peep Hole in Milan (2013). Recent group exhibitions include the Carnegie International (2013), The Ungovernables, New Museum Triennial (2012), and the 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011). NOW SHOWING Throughout 2015, exact dates to be announced SculptureCenter will also continue its Now Showing program which highlights a single artwork or project in areas throughout its building. Working with artists to find new ways of approaching the unique architecture of SculptureCenter, Now Showing is an exploratory and flexible mode for presenting artworks and projects to our audiences and thus is programmed with shorter lead-time. Now Showing projects will be announced as they are confirmed. About SculptureCenter Founded by artists in 1928, SculptureCenter is a not-for-profit arts institution in Long Island City, NY dedicated to experimental and innovative developments in contemporary sculpture. SculptureCenter commissions new works and presents exhibitions by emerging and established, national and international artists.
