A Caring Note…

Communication, Conflict Resolution & Friendship
The January counseling classes will be very interactive. The pre-kindergarten
classes will watch a video called “Share Your Feelings: Use Your Words”. The
program features a silly puppet named “Webster” who helps young students realize
that everyone has feelings, recognize their own feelings and the importance of
telling how they feel. The children will learn that telling the way you feel is the
best way to solve problems. This lesson is a wonderful introduction to feeling
words.
The kindergarten lesson will focus on the topic of friendship. The students will
hear two stories from the book Martha and George by James Marshall. The
stories are about two lovable hippos that are best friends. Through the two
vignettes that we read, the children will learn that you must be honest with your
friends and always try to help out when needed.
The first grade lesson also concentrated on the topic of Friendship. We will read
a book called How To Lose All Your Friends by Nancy Carlson. The children
usually enjoy this light-hearted look at bratty behavior that teaches children how
not to behave if they want friends. The class will then be asked to work with their
group to solve “friendship” problems that are posed to them.
Children need to be given time to develop friendships. They need to understand
how to join groups, be taught good sportsmanship, and encouraged to have a few
good friends. The relationship that children have with their friends is second in
importance only to those they have with their family. Friendships matter to
children for the support and sense of belonging they provide. Few experiences in a
child’s life can equal the job of proclaiming, “I have a friend!”
The second grade classes will enjoy a lesson about conflict resolution. They will
learn and practice the “I message” to peacefully resolve conflicts. “I messages”
allow a student to take responsibility for their feelings and be able to express
what is bothering them without putting the blame on someone else. The students
will learn that if they want to find a respectful resolution with someone, then, it is
important to use I-messages. Students will be given several examples of situations
that may make someone upset, angry, frustrated, or embarrassed. They will be
asked to pretend that they are using the I-message to tell the other person how
they felt.
You can have the children practice at home by having them fill in the blanks when
resolving a conflict that they have:
“I-message”:
I feel_______________ when you ______________ because______________.
(Feeling word)
(Specific behavior)
(how it affects me)
Example: I feel frustrated when you interrupt me because then I can’t finish what
I am saying.
A NOTE FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE….
Attention Preschool (PK) Parents: There are still a few of you who have not turned in proof of
flu vaccination. Please know that this is a state mandate and your child will not be allowed to
return to school on January 5th without it. Please avoid this inconvenience by having your child
vaccinated and turning in the paperwork ASAP!
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests the following list of HEALTHY NEW YEAR’S
RESOLUTIONS FOR KIDS. Here is the list for the appropriate age groups at Walton School.
The complete list can be found at the following link: http://www.aap.org/en-us/about-theaap/aap-press-room/news-features-and-safety-tips/pages/healthy-new-year-resolutions-forkids.aspx
Preschoolers:
• I will clean up my toys and put them where they belong.
• I will brush my teeth twice a day, and wash my hands after going to the bathroom and
before eating.
• I won’t tease dogs or other pets – even friendly ones. I will avoid being bitten by
keeping my fingers and face away from their mouths.
• I will talk with my parent or a trusted adult when I need help or am scared.
Children: Ages 5 to 12 years:
• I will drink reduced-fat milk and water everyday, and drink soda and fruit drinks only
at special times.
• I will put on sunscreen before I go outdoors on bright, sunny days. I will try to stay in
the shade whenever possible and wear a hat and sunglasses, especially when I’m
playing sports.
• I will try to find a sport (like basketball or soccer) or an activity (like playing tag,
jumping rope, dancing or riding my bike) that I like and do it at least three times a
week!
• I will always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.
• I will wear my seat belt every time I get in a car. I’ll sit in the back seat and use a
booster seat until I am tall enough to use a lap/shoulder seat belt.
• I’ll be nice to other kids. I’ll be friendly to kids who need friends or who may have a
hard time making friends – like someone who is shy, or is new to my school.
• I’ll never give out private information such as my name, home address, school name or
telephone number on the Internet. Also, I’ll never send a picture of myself to
someone I chat with on the computer without asking a parent or guardian if it is
okay.
• I will try to talk with my parent or a trusted adult when I have a problem or feel
stressed.
I wish everyone in our Walton School Community a Happy and Health New Year!
