EDUPRIZE PARENT NEWSLETTER DR. McCAMMAN’S CORNER 580 W. Melody Drive Gilbert, AZ 85233 480-813-9537 January 9, 2015 JANUARY 2015 Our teachers are beginning their training on AzMERIT (the 2014-15 State mandated assessment) and will begin test preparation in the classrooms soon. Grades 3-10 will be assessed in English Language Arts and Math. As a school we are opting to use the paper and pencil format for the first year and the time frame will be April 13-24. This state mandated assessment is a very important tool used to monitor student growth so it is necessary to have all of our students in attendance during testing. As always, we are effective at school if our parents support us at home. Please refer to: http://www.azed.gov/assessment/new for updated information, practice materials, and tips for successful test taking. 13 Before the winter break, we held a parent meeting for the parents of secondary (7th-10th grade) students. It was a productive meeting where we were able to share information on the future of the program and to work through some misinformation and fallacies. One of the points of confusion seemed to be what administrators were in charge of what students. Below you will find a partial list of the administrators and the grade levels/areas they cover: 29 Jim Richardson Dean of Students K-10th grades All discipline issues Chuck Green Secondary Principal 7th-10th grades All Areas Robbie McCamman Elementary Principal K-6th grades All Areas WHAT’S UP FROM MR. In this weeks installment we explain the meaning of “SL” and “HL” designations for each course. SL, or Standard Level, refers to the level of understanding expected of the student in the assessments. SL courses are taught at the level of freshman courses for non-majors. The course is required to have 150 contact hours, but is expected to occur concurrently during the two years of the Diploma Programme (DP). An HL course (Higher Level) requires a stronger level of understanding (reflected in the assessments) by the student. It requires 250 contact hours, and is equivalent to the first year of college for a majors course in the content area. In order to earn the IB Diploma, a student must take at least 3 HL courses, and a total of 6 courses. PROJECT EXPLORATION In five short weeks we will be boarding our buses for our fabulous trip to Southern California and our ocean adventure through Project Exploration. I would like to thank all of the chaperones and students who paid all fees on time. Friday, January 9th, (today), is the deadline for the final student payment. Please make sure your payment is made at the front desk of Building 1 next week if you missed this deadline! Within the next three weeks, students will receive a full itinerary and a list of items to bring. Those students who have elected to have supplementary insurance will receive their forms. There will also be individual medical forms for those of you who filled out blue prescription forms. We will need one form for each medication your child must take. A chaperone meeting will be scheduled for the end of January. The date, time and location will be announced.
