When Sending Money from South
Africa the sender must provide the
following information to the receiver:
• MTCN. The Money Transfer Control
Number uniquely allocated to every
transaction.
• Amount of money sent. The amount
of money to be received in the
receiver’s local currency.
• Name and address of sender. The
full name as per the sender’s ID or
passport, street (or postal) address,
city, country and contact numbers of
the person sending the money.
• Test
Question. A secret question
the receiver is to be asked when
collecting the money.
• Test
Answer. The answer to the test
question that the receiver will be required
to give, when collecting the money.
When Receiving Money in South Africa
the receiver must get the following
information from the sender:
• MTCN.

ROOF OF ADDRESS. In order to either:

a) set up a Western Union profile at Absa (see point 2 below), or
b) to transact at a Non-Absa authorised provider of the Western Union Money
Transfer service, a consumer will need to provide a utility bill. This is a bill
(e.g. telephone, water, electricity, etc) with the consumer’s name and physical
address, that provides proof of residence. The bill presented must not be older
than 3 months old.
PROOF OF FUNDS/INCOME. Under South African Law, you may be required
to provide proof of funds when SENDING a transaction from South Africa.
Examples of such may be any of the following:
a) an ATM SLIP indicating at least a matching South African Rand value of
the money being sent.
b) a BANK STATEMENT that shows source of funds
c) LATEST PAYSLIP to indicating payment received from the customer’s
employment.
d) PROOF OF PURCHASE OF RANDS at a FOREIGN EXCHANGE BUREAU to
show foreign exchange being converted to the South African Rand value.

WESTERN UNION PROFILE WITH Absa. When doing a Western Union
Money Transfer for the first time at Absa you will be required to speak to a
consultant to create a customer profile. Once created, you will utilise this
whenever transacting at an Absa branch. This will be subject to update either
upon:
a) Change of your residential address,
b) After every 24 months
