RELATIONSHIP OF SELECTED ANTHROPOMETRIC
MEASUREMENTS WITH SWIMMING
PERFORMANCE

Abstract:-Background: Anthropometretic measurements are playing major role enhancing
the performance of the swimmers. Keep in mind researcher investigated the relationship of
selected anthropometrics measurement with swimming performance.
Materials and Methods: 20 male inter-university level swimmers of S.G.B.Amravati
University were selected as subject. The age of the subject was ranging from 18 to 25 year. To
fullfill the purpose of the study selected anthropometric measurement i.e. .palm length, Arm
length, Shoulder width, Chest circumference, Hip width, Sitting height was measured by using
flexible still tape and score recorded in centimeters and standing height was measured by using
stadiometre score was recorded in centimeter. The relationship of Anthropometretic
measurement with swimming performance established by computing Pearson’s Product
Movement Correlation[Zero Order].
Result: Analysis of data revealed significant relationship between swimming performance and
Palm Length (r = 0.467), Arm Length (r = 0.445) Shoulder Width (r = 0.465), Standing Height (r
= 0.455), Anthropometric Measurements (r = 0.456) . No significant relationship was found
between swimming performance and Chest Circumference (r = 0.043), Hip Width (r = 0.105),
Sitting Height ( r = 0.222) because all the calculated values are less than tabulated r = 0.444 at
0.05 level of confidence with 18 degree of freedom.
Conclusions: Palm length, Arm Length, Shoulder Width, and Standing Height were
significantly related to swimming performance. Chest Circumference, Hip Width, Sitting
Height were not significantly related to swimming performance.

INTRODUCTION
Anthropometry for performance is anthropometrical techniques which are useful to study the body sizes &
shape of the masses. This information is helpful in acquiring greater understanding of those attributes, which
contributes to performance in sports. Physical performance e.g. speed, strength, power, endurance depends strongly
on the amount of force producing tissues, the application of forces through the levels of the limbs and the adaptation
of training. Anthropometry has greatly contributed to sports medicine management. Physiotherapist in sports
medicine clinics uses anthropometry in the everyday treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes.
Measurement of body size includes such descriptive information as height, weight and surface areas, while
measurement of body proportion describes the relationship between height and weight and among length, width and
circumferences of various body segments. It has been found that top athlete in some sports tend to have those
proportion that bio-mechanically aid the particular performance required.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
Subject: 20 male inter-university level swimmers of S.G.B.Amravati University were selected as subject.

This selection was entirely based on purposive sample. The age of the subject was ranging from 18 to 25 year.
Variables :To full fill the purpose of the study selected anthropometric measurement i.e. .palm length, Arm length,
Shoulder width, Chest circumference, Hip width,Sitting height was measured by using flexible still tape and score
recorded in centimeters and standing height was measured by using stadiometre score was recorded in centimeter .
Statistical Analysis: The relationship of Anthropometretic measurement with swimming performance established
by computing Pearson’s Product Movement Correlation [Zero Order].For the testing hypothesis, the level of
significance was set at 0.05.

Tabulated r0.05 (18) = 0.444
It is learned from table 1 that the selected anthropometric measurements namely palm length, Arm length,
Shoulder width, Standing height are significantly related to swimming performance and chest circumference, Hip
width, Sitting height showed insignificant relationship because the calculated r-value is less than the tabulated rvalue of 0.444
DISCUSSION ON FINDINGS
The result of the present study showed the Swimming Performance with Palm Length (r = 0.467), Arm
Length (r = 0.445) Shoulder Width (r = 0.465), Standing Height (r = 0.455), Anthropometric Measurements (r =
0.456) which is greater than tabulated r = 0.444 at n = 18. Hence, there is significant correlation between them.
It may be attributed to the fact that the maximum Palm length will help in pulling water and Arm Length
Shoulder Width, Standing Height are all the significant variables will attribute in enhancing the performance of the
swimmers.
CONCLUSION
Considering the limitations of the study and on the basis of statistical findings it was concluded that1)Palm length, Shoulder width, Arm length, Standing height and Total Anthropometric Measurements were

significantly related with swimming performance.
2)Chest Circumference, Hip Width and Sitting Height were not significantly related with swimming performance.
