those inquiring about becoming Catholic or those who have not
received all of the Initiation Sacraments. Those who would like to

PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK/SHUT-INS: Please
notify the rectory when a family member is ill or hospitalized.

We Welcome You to Sunday Mass—good Catholics come to the Table of the Lord every Sunday.
Only for serious reasons do we fail to come to Sunday Mass and worship the Lord Jesus Christ. Our
families gather weekly and worship the Lord and thank the Lord for the wonders of God’s love. Remember the family that prays together, stays together.
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord—John the Baptist baptized the Lord Jesus in the waters of the Jordan River. The
Lord’s Baptism is a foreshadowing of our own Sacramental Baptism. In the Sacrament of Holy Baptism we become
children of God and heirs of Heaven. The other six Sacraments of the Catholic Church are built upon the Sacrament
of Holy Baptism. Needless to say, the Sacrament of Baptism is necessary for Salvation. Original sin is taken away
and we are filled with the grace and goodness of the Lord Jesus Christ. On this important celebration of our Catholic
Faith let us be thankful for our Baptism and the Baptism of our family members in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Liturgical Calendar—the Christmas season in the Church ends today—tomorrow, Monday, January 12, we enter
into Ordinary Time in the Prayer Life of our Church. Our next festival of Faith begins on Wednesday, February 18,
Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Holy Season of Lent.
Grateful—I am most grateful for all who helped our Parish celebrate Blessed and Holy Christmas. Our Parish Family appreciates and values all of the many hearts and hands that contributed to a most fitting observance of Christmas
2014.
Families—in the New Year we are praying for all of our families as we prepare for the visit of Pope Francis to the
United States and the special gathering of families in Philadelphia. This year pray for all families especially our families here at Saint Mary’s.

GENERAL ADVICE FOR HEALTHY LIVING
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God that
you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to
God, which is your reasonable service.” (Romans 12:1)
Important reminders for the year:
1. Schedule your yearly visit with your primary care physician.
2. Women above the age of 18 or any female that is sexually active should schedule their yearly pap smear.
3. Women above 40 remember to get your mammogram
and for all women monthly breast self exam for lumps.
Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in
women between 40 and 65 years.
4. Men above 50 remind your doctor to check your prostate
an/or PSA. Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy
in men in the United States.
5. See your dentist at least every 6 months.
6. Incorporate exercise in your life and shoot for at least 20
minutes three times a week.
7. Eat right and NEVER drink your calories.
8. Stop smoking.
9. Drink alcohol in moderation.
Always use your seat belt and please strap your children per
guidelines.
Without our health in mind and body, we really cannot function. Watch over yourself and utilize the resources that are
available.
Prayer: Loving Father, help us to put on the new person,
who is renewed in knowledge, according to your image.

Come One, Come All—Altar Server Training
for new altar servers on Sun., Jan. 18 from 11:30
a.m.—1:30 p.m. (lunch provided). We are looking for
children, grade 4 and up, who are interested in becoming an altar server. Anyone attending this session will be completely trained and ready to serve Mass as soon as February! No
experience is necessary, just the will to serve! We are especially
in need of servers for the Sat., 5 p.m. and Sun., 8 a.m. Masses,
but are also accepting new servers for the Sun., 10:30 a.m. Mass.
Anyone interested in enrolling their children should contact Matt

also welcome on the 18th.

Parish in Bellevue, Fri., Feb. 6 from 7-9:30 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 7

couples attending our 4 p.m. Mass together. After Mass at the
Hall there will be a very light supper and certificates will be distributed. Cost is $50 per couple.
This class fulfills the diocesan requirement for participation in a
marriage preparation program before getting married in the

The gospel today points to Jesus’ humanity; like us He needed
RECOGNITION (“You are my Son”), AFFFECTION (“My
Beloved Son”) and AFFIRMANTION (“With you I am well
pleased.”). In our families it is easy to focus on irritating behaviors and take for granted all the positives. This New Year
take a lesson from God the Father, be an AFFIRMER and not
a BLAMER.

Transmission of the Influenza virus is by droplets from respiratory secretions. The virus is propelled by sneezing or coughing. Hand to hand and other personal contact can also result in
transmission. Incubation period for the flu is short, anywhere
from 1 to 3 days. Infected persons are usually contagious from
one day before they develop symptoms to up to 7 days after
they get sick. Uncomplicated flu, the acute illness resolves in
2 to 5 days and most patients are fully recovered in one week.
In a minority of patients, the weakness of the disease persists
for several weeks. Complications include: Dehydration, Seizures, Pneumonia, Liver failure, Myocarditis (inflammation of
the Heart), and Myositis (inflammation of the muscles).
Prevention—Wash Your Hands Often
TREATMENT—is largely supportive with fever reducers, rest
and fluids. There are antiviral medications on the market but
must be started within 48 hours of illness to be effective. Antibiotics should be reserved for therapy of bacterial complications of the disease. Close observation is key to preventing
death.
There is NO CURE for the flu or a cold but time itself
When to Seek Emergency Medical Care: vomiting and unable to keep liquids down, has signs of dehydration (dizziness
when standing, absence of urination or in infants, a lack of
tears when they cry), seizures, lingering fever, difficulty
breathing or shortness of breath, purple or blue discoloration of
the lips, chest pain, and unusual fatigue, being so irritable that
the child does not what to be held, and confusion.
To Feel Better – Rest and Drink plenty of fluids
Medication to help with the symptoms: Over the counter
medications can make you more comfortable by treating the
symptoms but do not treat the virus.
Nasal decongestants, cough suppressants (antitussives), Expectorants (to loosen mucus and make your cough more productive), Antihistamines (stop runny nose and sneezing), Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen
Do not give aspirin to children 12 and under who have flu
symptoms (this is associated with Reye syndrome – a rare fatal
condition)
Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay
home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep
from infecting them.
Get a FLU SHOT – it is the best tool to win the fight!

Business/Music Corner:
Well, this week I am trying to catch-up on the collections for the past two weeks! The good news is that
we deposited a little over $30,400 this past week.
Specifically, the Christmas Mass collection(s) were $8,710
and probably a little will be trickling in the next few weeks.
The total amount [Christmas] is almost exactly what we collected last year, which is good news for the parish.
Music Highlights: Well, I can say without reservation that all
three Christmas Masses were musically a great tribute to our
parish and the music ministry. All the groups performed superbly and I gratefully thank all of them for their hard work.
But now we must turn to Holy Week and Easter and so the
work continues! Fr. Dave kids about having Christmas [and
Easter] every 3rd year to make it liturgically easier but I suspect that would instigate a demonstration and we seem to
have enough of those in these troubled times. My consultants
have assured me that they would continue to celebrate each
year as their ‘livelihood’ is dependent upon these festive-food
occasions! I have been somewhat remiss in updating their
activities. I do know that Norm once again had trouble while
trying to decorate their Christmas tree. When he tried to illuminate and place the star on the top of the tree, he somehow
got his tail stuck in one of the light sockets and well… Nony
said that the star lit-up for a few seconds and then looked a
little like a Fourth-of-July fireworks gone terribly wrong but
admitted that it did bring some Christmas cheer to the day
after he recovered from uncontrollable laughter. I told him to
take a ‘time-out’.
