THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday,
the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Scripture readings begin with a passage from the Book of the prophet
Isaiah which is applied to the identity of Christ. The second reading, from the First Letter of John, speaks of the
consequences of our belief in Christ. In the Gospel we
hear of the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River.

RCIA: RITE OF WELCOMING
At the 10:30 am Mass Sunday, January 11th, we will
celebrate the Rite of Welcoming for those candidates
who have begun their journey to enter the Catholic faith
or to complete full initiation into the Catholic faith. We
ask your prayers and support for Troy Benson, Jeremiah Bondra, Jennifer Curtis, Stephanie Downs, Mark
Maurer, Matt Morrison, Catherine Nearhoof, Wyatt Stoll,
Morgan Wisinski and Sierra Wisinski as they begin
preparation for reception of the Sacraments of Initiation
at the Easter Vigil.
SAVE THE DATE: “MARCH FOR LIFE”
Thursday, January 22, 2015. With the theme of “Every
Life is a Gift,” we will again be teaming up with St. Ferdinand's to charter a bus to Washington D.C. and join
thousands of others, as we take a stand for the sanctity
of life. Watch for the registration form in future bulletins. For information, please contact Ray Haskins @
412-400-0521.
SYMPATHY: The sympathy of the parish is extended to
parishioner, Mary Ann Argyros, and her family at the
death of her father, Glenn Kuhn. May his soul and all the
souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God
rest in peace.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY: The Wednesday Women’s
Bible Study meets every Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:00
a.m. We will resume our study on Wednesday, January
7th, with the study of Matthew. Call Chris Hespenheide
at 724-776-3356 for more information.
BUILDING FUND (TO BUILD A CHURCH, A CHURCH ALIVE):
We continue to receive donations and pledges every
day. We are at the point where our goal is in sight but
that every single donation or pledge (of whatever
amount) makes a difference. If you have not made a
pledge, please consider doing so. If you do not have
the card or form, please call the Parish Office. If you
are interested in making a one-time gift to the campaign,
please call the Parish Office and we can help you do
that. We are so grateful for the enormous generosity
that has enabled us to get so close to building a new
church. Please help us meet the goal of ten million in
pledges or gifts.
SERVING OUR COMMUNITIES
Our Food Pantry continues to serve our communities. For the month of December, 107 families (420 individuals)
utilized the Food Pantry. The demand continues to grow! The Food Pantry, located in the basement of the old
rectory in Mars at 205 Clark Street, is open every Wednesday from 3:00 until 6:30 pm.
FOOD DONATIONS
The Food Pantry is always appreciative of your donations (please do check to make sure donated items have not
expired). This week, we are most in need of the following: cereal, Nutri-Grain Bars, oatmeal, granola bars,
snack foods (fruit snacks, pretzels, nuts, raisins, cookie/brownie mixes, crackers), stuffing, boxed potatoes,
Hamburger Helper, pasta sauce, jelly, ravioli, canned meats, applesauce, canned fruit and cranberry sauce.
Donations can be placed in the cart located outside the auditorium before/after weekend Masses or at the Parish
Center during the week.
FELLOWSHIP DINNERS
These Wednesday evening meals are of great help to our neighbors and provide food and fellowship for those in
any need. Dinner is served from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. every Wednesday in the Parish Hall (next to the church in Mars
on the corner of Clark and Cherry Streets).

Our NEXT Jr. SKY is on Saturday, January 17th from
6:30-8:30 pm at Saint Kilian. This will be the only Jr.
SKY in January, don’t miss it! NOTE: we have moved
back to Saint Kilian for all meetings and have made
changes to the schedule. Please see the new UPDATED schedule posted online at www.saintkilian.org
(go to “ministries,” then “youth ministry”).
Stuffed Animals and Crayons: We are collecting
gently used stuffed animals for the
nursing homes and used crayons
and gel/glitter pens for quilt square
making and crafts – old odds and
ends are perfect. We will be using
both at our Bears and Squares
service project on February 14th.
Drop off at the front desk, ATTN: Jo Scheller.
Fabric Scissors Found: Very nice pair of fabric scissors and case left from our fleece blanket service project in the fall. Please let me know if they are yours.
The Silver Ring Thing is a national
touring program mixing comedy, high
tech, and featured speakers to promote
abstinence as God’s plan for love. It is
powerful and has received rave reviews. We will not be attending as a
group, but families are encouraged to
attend. Recommended ages are 8th-12th grades. There
are two events in Pennsylvania: January 16
(Pittsburgh), January 18 (Bethel Park). For tickets or
more information, visit www.silverringthing.org
Alternative Activities: For those in the Family Centered program or the summer session for CCD, you
may substitute service projects or religious activities
you do on your own for your Jr. SKY requirement(s). A
brief summary of the event and a reflection on its significance is submitted once you have completed your
activity. Email Jo for more information.
New Location: Jr. SKY is moving from CWNC back to
the Saint Kilian cafeteria beginning in January. This is
our home and will allow us to more easily prepare for
our activities. Pick-up and drop-off will both be at the
front doors to the cafeteria.
HOMEBOUND/NURSING HOME PARISHIONERS: If
you know of someone in the parish who is homebound or
in a nursing home and would like a visit, or a phone call
from a Lady of Charity, please call the Parish Secretary at
724-625-1665, ext.2108.
JANUARY 14 – Fellowship Dinner Help Needed

To Build A Church, a Church Alive
Pledge Redemption Instructions
Over the next five years, we will be collecting on the pledges made to our To Build A Church, A Church Alive Campaign
which will enable us to build our church. In order to make the process easier for both you and the parish, we ask that you
please utilize the following information when you fulfill your commitment.
Pledge Payments
Remittance statements are mailed the last week of every month. If you are sending payments on a different
schedule than monthly, the remittance statement schedule is the same, but you’ll receive them when you selected — semi-annually, annually, etc.
In order to assist Saint Kilian with the pledge payment process over the next five years, please wait for your
reminder statement before sending any payments to To Build A Church, A Church Alive. Do not send payments directly to Saint Kilian. Pledges are centrally processed, and the Diocese sends the proceeds to Saint
Kilian each quarter over the next five years via our parish’s Diocesan savings & loan account.
If you need to make any changes to your pledge, or if there are any errors, please send the changes to:
To Build A Church, A Church alive
c/o Our Campaign for The Church Alive!
PO Box 4
Pittsburgh, PA 15230
If you prefer to make your payments electronically (from a bank account or credit card) please visit the Faith Direct Website www.faithdirect.net where you can create an account or sign into your current account. Once on
the main homepage of your account, click “Add an Organization,” then enter the code PA162 for the Diocese of
Pittsburgh, not PA191 for Saint Kilian. Next, select Saint Kilian from the drop-down menu in order to have
your payments apply to the To Build A Church, A Church Alive Campaign at Saint Kilian. The remaining steps will allow you to set up your payment schedule. Finally, you will need to link your payment to a
major credit card or bank account of your choosing.
Tax Letters
Each year, tax letters will be sent from the Diocese for the preceding year of all pledge payments, note that these
are separate from the information sent by Saint Kilian for your Offertory and Parish Share participation.
Please direct any detailed tax questions to the Office of Stewardship:
(412) 456-3085 or email [email protected].

MUSIC MINISTRY
The appointed psalm response today is actually not
a psalm at all. It is known as a canticle. Canticles
are songs and there are 10 common ones used in
various prayers and liturgical settings. There are
seven Old Testament canticles and 3 New Testament canticles commonly used. Recently we had
the canticle of the Blessed Virgin Mary also known
as the Magnificat (from the Gospel of Luke). Today’s setting is the Canticle of Isaiah. The verses
are part of song celebrating God’s deliverance of
Israel from disaster and destruction. The psalmist
proclaims god savior and calls all Israel to spread
the news of God’s saving intervention to “all the
earth.”
Many of you attended the various masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Our choirs worked
very hard to prepare a variety of music heard before
and during those masses. If you would like to hear
all of their selections you can go to our special website set up to hear recordings from those masses.
On your computer enter the following address into
your browser and enjoy the wonderful holiday music
by our talented groups!

CARE NOTES: In a rack on the counter outside the
auditorium at CWNC and on the shelves near the front
office of the Parish Center you will find small pamphlets
called Care Notes. These are short treatments on contemporary life issues from a Catholic perspective.
Please feel free to take what might be of interest to you
and pass them on when you have finished with them.
They are free but donations are accepted.
Marriage Ministry Corner
Marriage Tip of the Week:
“Behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem.” (Mt
2:2). The wise still seek Jesus. What gifts of wisdom do
you possess? A lesson learned from your childhood? A
proverb that steers your life? A virtue to which you’ve
struggled to be true? For daily marriage tips, visit
www.foryourmarriage.org, an initiative of the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Marriage Encounter: The holidays are such a busy time
of the year. That along with jobs, kids’ sports and activities, and other facets of family life can emotionally, socially, and spiritually separate a husband and wife. A
Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend takes you
away from those things that draw you away from each
other and helps you rediscover the things that attracted
you to each other in the first place. Upcoming weekends Jan 23-25 in Portage, PA, Feb 27-Mar 1 in State
College, PA. Reservations are limited, register early!
http://www.yourmarriageisworthit.org/ for info or to register.
Retrouvaille: Do you feel lost, alone or bored in your
marriage? Are you frustrated, hurt or angry with your
spouse? Ae you constantly fighting or do you simply
shut down? Have you thought about separation or divorce? Does talking about it only seem to make it
worse? A Retrouvaille Weekend can help! Jan 16-18,
2015 in Pittsburgh. 412-277-3434 to register or visit
www.helpourmarriage.com. There is hope!
Christian Family Movement: Our parish has a number
of small faith sharing communities that meet monthly to
promote Christ-centered marriage and family life.
Groups are geared to life-stage such as a group with
young children, teens, empty nesters, etc. More information can be found at www.cfm.org or call Lori and
Gerry Crowley at (724) 816-3951 or e-mail [email protected].
CARING QUILT MINISTRY: The Caring Quilt Ministry
has been very fortunate with new members
and several generous donations. But as we
always remind everyone - this is a parish effort and the more prayers and hands in a
quilt, the more blest the person receiving it.
Our next work day is January 24th from 9:00 a.m.-3:00
p.m. at the Parish Hall in Mars. Thanks to all who continue to support this ministry. If you have any questions

FIRST GRADE
First grade is an exciting place to be no matter what time of year! All first grade classrooms offer opportunities
for parents to be a part of the action. Most weeks include a weekly classroom visit from a student’s parent; this
exposure provides an additional opportunity for students to experience a real world connection to their learning.
Sometimes the activities are centered on upcoming holidays or seasonal activities and other times parents
come to talk about topics related to their careers. Either way, these real world experiences provide the students
the chance to learn and make connections to the world around them in an up close and personal way. Each
parent presentation comes complete with an extension activity or craft, question and answer time, and snack of
course! (Many thanks to all the parents who have already volunteered their time and talent to enlighten the
youth of our school.) We are waiting with anticipation for the parent presentations yet to come this year.
In mid- January, we will be pleased to announce the introduction of Bonus Boxes to our classrooms. Bonus
Boxes are individual hands on learning activities that are available to students when they finish a task. There
are several different themes to the boxes which include seasonal, sensory, imaginary, creativity, and engaging
learning opportunities. These activities are self-guided and interest driven allowing the students to choose
freely a box which will not only present a learning opportunity, but a creativity outlet as well.
As you can see, first grade is both academic and active and our students are continually challenged to use their
senses and engage in meaningful learning experiences.
