JERIN – Kreativitas dalam Keberagaman Press Release - January 25th, 2012 Batik Exhibition as part of JERIN: JERIN: Indonesian Batik “A living Heritage” shows German Batik artists The exhibition Indonesian Batik “A living Heritage” aims to dignify batik, the most traditional art style Indonesia’s, in a very specific way. In addition to the historic background, the symbol-meaning and production process of batik, the exhibition also keeps an eye on batik artists from Europe, especially from Germany. How did the batik art come come to Europe? What differs European from Indonesian batik? Batik as textile art has still a hard time to gain advantage in the art scene in Europe. But with the help of dedicated European textile artists, like the artists who shows their batik in our exhibition, batik will always continue to gain in importance. Each batik artist has a history in relation to batik. Most have taken deep research trips to Indonesia to learn the techniques. Today if we look at European batik art, we can see big differences to the traditional Indonesian batik. Solved from traditional patterns, artists today realize themselves by their batiks. The more exciting it is to compare batik art from Europe with traditional batik from Indonesia. In the exhibition Indonesian Batik “A living Heritage” we can have a look at these differences and learn even more about batik and its origins. For further Information about the European batik artists and the exhibition, see our ProProgramme Booklet or visit our homepage www.jerin.or.id. www.jerin.or.id. JERIN – Creativity in Diversity Press Release EKONID: Exhibition “Batik – A Living Heritage”, 25.01.2012 Batik – inspiring and attractive In 2009 Indonesian batik won the UNESCO award of “Intangible Heritage of Humanity” to recognize the value of the non-material component of culture, as well as entail the commitment of states to promote and safeguard the Masterpieces. Adopting this assignment, EKONID implemented the 4-year Clean Batik Initiative program together with the German-Malaysian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (MGCC), and the IHKAcademy Munich, co-financed by the European Commission under the SWITCH-Asia grant in 2010. EKONID as one of the JERIN partners developed and realized the exhibition “Indonesian Batik – A Living Heritage”. The exhibition conveys the rich history of batik which can be traced back 1,500 years ago, informs about its traditional almost forgotten production processes and provides insight into the meaningful symbols and motives used. Current environmental challenges and modern designers demonstrating their love for traditional and contemporary batik shows that batik is relevant for the future. “Future generations should have the chance to enjoy Batik as much as we do today”, wishes Mr Martin Krummeck, exhibition coordinator and Deputy Managing Director of EKONID. We do hope that the exquisite display of this unique art triggers support in Indonesia for the sustainable development and appreciation of batik. LANDSCAPE OF DIVERSITY is an installation that was initially made for and exhibited on the London Festival of Architecture 2010, in London, United Kingdom. This is the first Indonesian pavilion on behalf of Indonesian Embassy in London on its first participation on the event. The Landscape of Diversity was short-listed on the competition held among the 30 projects from different embassies in London. This installation is now taking part at The aim of the production of the installation is on the line with the exhibition’s theme of batik and its use and influence in international stage. It is substantial to understand batik not only as a heritage of Humanity, but also as a part of a contemporary living and modern technology. This installation, Landscape of Diversity, examines one of the rich traditional Indonesian cultures – batik – to represent the country’s diverse structure. the Indonesian Batik : A living Heritage Exhibition held by Germany Embassy in Jakarta, in commemoration of 60 Alur Design Group years economic cooperation between Germany and of the installation is an interdisciplinary design and creative Indonesia. studio envisioned by a group of young Indonesian as the designer and producer architects and designers who are practicing in London at that time.
