Activities at Castlewood Canyon State Park
January & February 2015
Program meeting places:
Visitor Center - 5 miles south of Franktown on Hwy 83.
Event Facility Shelters - 1/2 mile past the Visitor Center. Park at the Canyon Point Parking Lot. Hikes will begin near the restrooms.
Pikes Peak Amphitheater - off of Lake Gulch Trail, 400 feet beyond the Event Facility Shelters.
Homestead Parking Lot - on Castlewood Canyon Road, 2 miles south of Hwy 86, just past the entrance station.
Westside Trailhead Parking Lot - on Castlewood Canyon Road, 4 miles south of Hwy 86. Hikes will begin near the restrooms.
Falls Trailhead Parking Lot - on Castlewood Canyon Road, 4.5 miles south of Hwy 86.

First Day Hike!
Thursday, January 1st, 10:00am-1:00pm
Join our Volunteer Naturalists for some
special first day hikes. What better way to
kick off the new year than to spend the
day hiking at Castlewood Canyon State
Park. We hope to see you all there! Join
us and receive a free Colorado Parks &
Wildlife First Day Hike water bottle!
Meet at the Canyon Point Parking Lot or the Westside
Trailhead Parking Lot and bring plenty of layers to stay
warm.

Join Lindsey Pogline for this weekly presentation about
Castlewood Canyon State Park. Learn something new and
have the opportunity to explore the park and see what it has
to offer. Meet at the Visitor Center.
Castlewood Canyon Dam History Hike
Sunday, January 18th, 10:00am-12:00pm
Join Volunteer Naturalist Cathy Fischer to hike out to the
dam ruins and learn more about it's interesting history. Dress
for the weather. Hiking poles helpful if there is snow/ice.
Meet at Canyon Point Parking Lot at the Lake Gulch
Trailhead.

Winter Photography Ideas Hike
Sunday, February 15th, 10:00am-11:30am
Join Volunteer Naturalist Cathy
Fischer for a short hike and capture
winter in a different view. With a
bit of imagination (and some warm
clothes), your photography does not
have to hibernate for the winter.
Dress for the weather; wear
waterproof boots if there is snow. Meet at the Bridge Canyon
Overlook Parking Lot.

VISITOR CENTER HOURS: 9:00am-4:00pm
PARK PASSES
A Colorado State Park Pass is required on all vehicles entering the park. Daily passes are $7 per vehicle,
annual passes are $70 and are good for one year from the date of purchase at all 42 Colorado State Parks.
All public programs are free of charge with a valid parks pass.

Castlewood Canyon 12,000 Years Ago Program
Saturday, January 31st, 12:00pm-1:30pm
Join Park Interpreter Warren Coker to hear the story of
Castlewood Canyon 12,000 years ago, during a time when
people lived in local rock shelters and hunted mastodon and
mammoths. Try your hand at making twine from yucca and
watch the shaping of stone tools by flint knapping. Learn
about the atlatl, the ancient spear thrower that pre-dates the
bow and arrow by thousands of years, with a live throwing
demonstration. Meet at the Visitor Center.
Castlewood Up Close Hike
Saturday, February 28th, 1:00pm-3:00pm
Bring a camera that has a macro setting and take a macro
view of Castlewood Canyon with Volunteer Naturalist Linda
Pohle. Dress for walking outdoors and bring a flash drive or
cable that will enable you to share your photos. Meet at the
Visitor Center.
Become a Volunteer at
Castlewood Canyon State Park!
Our 2015 Prospective Volunteer Meeting is
Saturday, January 31st, from 10:00am-12:00pm at
the Visitor Center! Come and learn what it takes to
be a Volunteer at Castlewood Canyon!
The Volunteer Naturalist Program was designed to aid Park
staff in providing enjoyable, educational, and safe experiences for our visitors.
QUALIFICATIONS
 Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school
diploma (or GED) - or have special permission from the
Volunteer Coordinator.
 Enjoy interacting with the public and answering questions.
 Be able to communicate with people.
 Be in good physical condition (able to lead hikes).
 Complete the 5-week Volunteer Naturalist Training
Course.
 Most Importantly: Volunteers must have a love and
respect for the outdoors and a willingness to learn.
MUNZEE is now at Castlewood Canyon State Park
What is it? A “QR Code” global scavenger hunt using a smart
phone. How much does it cost? It is a free APP. Why MUNZEE? A great way to get you as well as your kids involved with
the outdoors. Where can these QR Codes be found? All over the
entire world! How many are in Castlewood Canyon? There are
four. How do I get started? Go to the MUNZEE web site to enroll

Castlewood Canyon State Park
100 Mile Challenge
You are invited to hike, run, walk or snowshoe 100
trail miles in the park and earn a Castlewood Canyon
State Park 100 Mile Challenge Coin.
Get outside, challenge your fitness level, and enjoy
your adventure in the park! Keep track of your own
miles and bring your log to the Visitor Center when
you have completed the challenge, and receive
your Castlewood Canyon State Park
100 Mile Challenge Coin.
The challenge ends December 2015!
