I sincerely hope you had time to relax and reconnect with family and friends. As we wrap up first semester and near the half-way point of the year, I want to thank those of you who have embraced my challenge to get connected and involved in RBHS. We have seen an increase in the number of parents who are volunteering for positions, offering to help, and stepping up to support the school. I want to continue to encourage you all to find ways to connect to RBHS that work with your schedule and interests. Our PTSA, Foundation, Friends of the Library, and other booster clubs are all needing parents to join and be a part of their work on campus. In 2015 there are going to be many ways you can Get Connected. I am not much for New Year’s resolutions; however I have started back up my running regiment in order to get ready for the Bookin’ it for the Broncos 5K Run/Walk on January 25th and Chelsea’s Run on March 7th. The Bookin’ it for the Broncos is our second annual fundraiser for the January 2015 www.rbhs.org Vol. XX, No. 5 library and we are encouraging students and parents to come out and support the great work our Friends of the Library do to support RBHS. Registration information may be found on the website. In addition, we are currently organizing and promoting Chelsea’s Run. Last year RBHS had the second largest team and this year we want to be first. This is a very important event for me as I knew Chelsea, have children of my own, and value how this event pulls our community together. I encourage everyone to sign up for both events. The winter season is upon us, which means on any given night there is most likely some kind of athletic event going on. We have Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer and Basketball, Girls’ Water Polo, Wrestling, and Roller Hockey. Winter is always a busy season and coming to an athletic competition, even if you don’t have athletes, is a great way to support RBHS and get connected. We also have our Robotics, Academic League, Science Olympiad, and Speech and Debate all getting ready for their upcoming competitions. These programs are always looking for parent volunteers to help out. Although the guests have gone home, the holiday lights are still up. The fun and exciting surprise of snow delayed our cleanup activities and thus we are a little behind. I am grateful to have this column to write because it helps me get organized. This half of the school year has many parents with seniors, like me, feeling that the world is spinning too fast. The PTSA is here to help! Mark your calendar for Grad Fest on January 27 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the MPR. This is a time to collect information about graduation and life after high school. Get connected with this newsletter. Included is information for students, parents, and families. January highlights: parenting classes, Grad Fest, FOL 5K, and winter sports banquets, oh yea...first semester finals! Mark your calendar for the Foundation’s Pasta Dinner on March 30, with an auction benefiting many school organizations, including Grad Nite. These events offer community service opportunities for students, but really need your support as parents to guide our students to be the model citizens we want them to be. And if you haven’t figured it out by now, we just plain want to see you on campus. Without you, these programs would not function and without the programs our students and teachers would have fewer resources. Let’s keep our school in its’ highest esteem by staying connected. GRAD NITE Grad Nite will be on campus this year and the theme is “It’s Personal!” The Committee has been planning the logistics for Grad Nite. This year we would like to integrate ALL GRADE LEVEL students and parents into the planning in order to include Bronco talent at every level. Many seniors wind up not knowing anything about Grad Nite. Let’s do something about this! Join us for a planning meeting on February 5 at 9:00 am and 6:00 pm in the Parent Center. We will be participating in the RB Foundation OnLine Auction and Silent Auction at the Pasta Dinner. The donations we receive will be auctioned at this event to make money to reduce cost for Grad Nite. Contact [email protected] for more info. Financial Assistance is available for Grad Nite tickets. JANUARY PILLAR -“FAIRNESS” Fairness means the quality of making judgments that are free from discrimination. Confucius was asked, “Is there one word that may serve as a rule of practice for all one’s life?” He answered, “Reciprocity. What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.” This basic principle is now called the “Golden Rule.” See you around campus. Our winter sport season has gotten off to a great start and many of our teams saw action over the holiday break. Leading the way is our undefeated roller hockey team, while quality wins have also been posted by our soccer, basketball, and girls’ water polo teams. Special congratulation goes to Boys Soccer Coach Kurt Trecker who earned his 100th career victory on December 19. If you are a basketball fan, don’t miss out on the exciting action as our girls host Carlsbad on January 14, and our boys host San Pasqual on January 16. Girls’ action begins with the JV game at 5:30 pm, while our freshman boys tip off at 4:00 pm in the first game of a triple header. Palomar League play begins on January 21 for soccer and basketball, so be sure to check our website for the dates and times of all athletic contests. This year both basketball and soccer play on Wednesday/Friday. A reminder to everyone attending a basketball or wrestling contest that admission will be charged. In basketball, Frosh/JV prices are $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students while Varsity prices are $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for students. Admission prices for wrestling contests are $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for students. Finally, spring sport athletes please note that all completed paperwork for your “Ticket to Play” must be turned in to the Athletic Office no later than January 23. Most spring sports will begin on Saturday February 21, which is during our February break, so be sure to pick up your “Ticket to Play” during lunch the week of February 9 - 13. Specific tryout information will be available on our website or the Athletic Office window by the beginning of February. No late start today. FIRST SEMESTER FINALS JAN. 13, 14 and 15 See www.rbhs.org for the finals daily schedule. FIRST SEMESTER ENDS FRIDAY, JAN. 16 SECOND SEMESTER BEGINS TUESDAY, JAN. 20 Periods 1 – 6, Full Day 7:30 – 2:30 SECOND SEMESTER SCHEDULES All RBHS students receive their class schedules online by logging into their MyPlan account. Beginning Saturday, January 17 at 5:00 pm students can view and print their final schedules. Tuesday, January 20 will be the first day of class for second semester. Classes will begin at 7:30 am. Students are expected to know, or have printed, their class schedule through their MyPlan accounts (using StudentVue from any cell phone or computer at school or home.) SENIORS WITH TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS Many colleges have mid-year deadlines for submitting transcripts. Please be mindful of those dates when requesting transcripts through Parchment. Senior social security numbers need to be on file with our Registrar, no later than January 31, 2015. Cal Grant GPA’s, linked to your social security number, will be submitted to the California Student Aid Commission via electronic submission for Cal Grant Awards in early February. This data works in conjunction with your FAFSA application for financial aid. Seniors MUST see Mrs. Dickinson, our Registrar, to confirm that your social security number is on file and correct. COLLEGE APPLICATION UPDATES Seniors who have added colleges to their Common Application through Naviance must notify their counselor ASAP regarding the updates. Counselors can then send the supporting documents in a timely manner. SENIOR INFORMATION CHECK Senior parents will receive this form via email on January 12. This is the final verification request of your senior’s birth date, legal name and social security information. All outside courses taken to fulfill graduation requirements must also be noted on the back of the form. A table will be set up in front of the finance office on January 26 - 30 to drop off the form. The deadline to return the information is January 30. No exceptions. COLLEGE INFO NIGHT FOR 11th GRADE PARENTS Who: RBHS PARENTS of Juniors only When: Tuesday, February 3, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm Where: RBHS Performing Arts Center In a question and answer format, college representatives from the UC, Community College and CSU systems will present information pertaining to testing, college applications, recommendations, timelines and resources available. 5 11th GRADE STUDENTS COLLEGE INFORMATION MEETING Monday, Feb. 9, 7:30 am – 8:30 am – PAC This will be an important college information meeting for juniors who plan to apply to four-year schools. 12th GRADE COMMUNITY COLLEGE WORKSHOP/PALOMAR ASSESSMENT TEST Monday, Feb. 9, 7:30 am – 8:30 am – LPR If you are planning on attending a community college in the fall, mark your calendars for this informational workshop to help smooth the transition into college. Bring your questions, and we will provide the answers. Don’t forget to register for the Palomar Assessment Test on March 5. You must register at www.palomar.edu and get your ID number prior to taking the tests. Information is in the Bronco Center. There is limited space, so don’t delay. FINANCIAL AID NIGHT FOR PARENTS OF COLLEGE-BOUND SENIORS Who: RBHS and PHS PARENTS of Seniors When: January 8, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Where: RBHS Performing Arts Center The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a core form that EVERYONE planning on higher education should complete. In addition to Federal aid, this form is also used by the State of California, Colleges (2 and 4-year) and Universities, and vocational institutions to determine their financial aid packages. Counselors and a financial aid representative will be available to review and answer parents’ questions regarding the FAFSA. Accurate and timely completion of the FAFSA is critical to secure and avoid delays in funding. Plan to spend two hours at this meeting. You may want to download and bring the FAFSA worksheet available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. RECORDS OFFICE HOURS Students: Break, Lunch or after school until 3:00 pm - not during class time Closed for Lunch: Monday – Friday 12:30 – 1:30 LOOKING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS Students interested in available scholarships should check the RBHS web site. Click on COUNSELING and go to the SCHOLARSHIPS link in the middle column of the page. Scholarships are added to the list throughout the year, so check the list often. See Ms. Geist in the Bronco Center for assistance. The course will not be added to the RBHS transcript without this pre-approval. Pre-approval forms and information regarding accepted outside courses are available in the Registrar’s Office. Buy tickets for the Farmers Insurance Golf Tournament on the Torrey Pines golf course on February 5 - 8. Tickets are $30.00 for a day. On January 25 we will have our second annual 5K RUN/WALK at the RB Community Center. Our first 5K was a huge success and we hope to have many more participants this year.
