School Information A Note from Principal Hough
A Note from Principal Hough School Information Dear Lake Wylie Families, Our students have been learning the 7 Habits of Highly Effective people this school year from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade. After reading the book, The Leader in Me over the summer, our staff decided that teaching these principals would increase our students’ self-directedness and that it would add to our already robust character education program. We’d like to encourage our families to learn more about these 7 Habits and to implement similar strategies with your children at home. We are experiencing great success with this strategy. Our number of discipline referrals has decreased, students are reporting less incidents of bullying, and teachers report that students are more responsible learners. SAIL Ceremonies We are so excited to celebrate the accomplishments of our students at our first SAIL ceremony of the school year. Students in K-2 are recognized for exceptional growth and excellent achievement in reading, math, and writing. Students in grades 3-5 are recognized for making A honor roll, A-B honor roll and overall exceptional growth. Students in all grades are recognized for showing great character. Due to space issues, only parents of students receiving these awards will be invited. We are so proud of our students. Instructional Happenings at Lake Wylie: UPCOMING EVENTS 3 Key Ideas for Parents about The Common Core Thinking Deeply The Common Core emphasizes critical thinking. It requires students to analyze more, discuss more, evaluate more, justify more and explain their thinking & understanding deeply, especially in writing. Take-Away: Really thinking deeply is hard. Let it BE hard, help them talk it out. Integrating Learning Ceremony The Common Core emphasizes learning across disciplines (reading with math & social studies standards combined into one task). Students spend more time working together with different settings, structures & tools. Take-Away: Problems & solutions happen every day in the real world. (Parents Showing How They Know The Common Core emphasizes proof & evidence. Long gone are the days of worksheets, fact memorizations and skill & drill. Students are not taught this way and they are not assessed this way. Take-away: The new tests will require students to explain how they know. Supporting The Common Core at Home 1. Ask *why* when children tell you they want something or want to do or not do something. 2. Use the word *because* after “No” or “Not tonight…” 3. Give reasons--you to them and them to you. 4. Encourage questions & explore answers (especially questions whose answers are not yes or no.) 5. Explain & discuss issues or problems in your house, neighborhood, & community. Brainstorm solutions. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Counselor’s Corner Let’s work together in educating our students to strive for quality in everything they do. Below are five caring messages by Sahron L. Banas to discuss with your child throughout the month. 1. Hard work helps us realize our potential. If we strive for quality, our successes will bring us more confidence, and our confidence will bring us more success. 2. When you write your name on the top of your papers think about how those papers are a reflection of you. What impression do you give others by the way you do that small thing? Always do your best and leave a good impression. 3. Promise yourself you’ll do quality work. It will become a habit-and we know how hard it is to break a habit! If 4. 5. you form good habits now, it will lead to success in school-and success in other areas of life. The difference between being ordinary and extraordinary is a little “extra” effort-so give the world your best try! This time of year, it is not uncommon to begin seeing increased numbers of flu and viral infections across the state and nation. There has been a lot of media attention to viral infections this year, particularly the Enterovirus D68, which has turned up across the country and in North Carolina. It is our practice as a district to be proactive in an effort to keep all students healthy and we wanted to share some information and suggestions for avoiding viruses. Enterovirus infections are very common – it’s estimated that as many as 10 million to 15 million infections occur each year. There are no specific medical treatments for viruses, so prevention is the best strategy. Symptoms can mimic those of colds or flu, including runny nose, coughing, fever and aches. Here are some suggestions for preventing the spread of flus and viruses: ● Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating. ● Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth. ● Cough or sneeze into a sleeve or elbow, not hands. ● Disinfect frequently touched surfaces. ● Keep your child home when he or she is fevered or feeling sick. Establish a contingency plan for keeping a sick child at home or picking him or her up from school so you are prepared if illness strikes. ● Keep your child at home for at least 24 hours after he or she is free of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. ● Talk with your healthcare provider about annual seasonal flu vaccines. As is our practice, we are monitoring school attendance for indications of widespread illness. Thus far, we have not seen reasons for concern. Should that change, we will share additional information with you. Our goal is to educate every child, every day, for a better tomorrow – and a safe, healthy school environment is very important to us. Thank you for choosing CMS for your family.
