SLS 1-9-15 Final FILE 1/7/15 1:36 PM Page 14 TEXAS SIMMENTAL/SIMBRAH N E W S It’s Stock Show Time in Texas By Emma Berry, TJSSA director With the holidays behind us, major stock show season is officially upon us. Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston and Austin are steadily approaching, and if you’re like me, you couldn’t be more excited! I’m looking forward to catching up with old friends and to meeting new friends, who I will see throughout the year. I’m excited for the opportunity to show off my animals and the hard work that has gone into them. And finally, who isn’t excited about all of the good food? Kicking off the season is my favorite stock show in Submit your 2015 TJSSA dues With the approach of the 2015 major show season, it's time to send in your $25 TJSSA membership dues. Membership forms are available at www.tjssa.com. Funds from membership dues go directly to paying for the premium money at the major shows in Texas. Save your family some time in line at check-in and remit your dues in advance of the major shows. We look forward to seeing you all soon! Texas, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo (FWSSR) held January 16th through February 7th. The FWSSR is not only the largest stock show in Texas, it also has many opportunities for students to earn scholarships. For example, the Heifer Superintendent’s Beef Challenge is available to all students enrolled in their senior year of high school and who have shown at the FWSSR for at least two years. The San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, which runs from February 12th through March 1st, is next on the list of major stock shows. It offers many scholarship opportunities through calf scrambles, quiz bowls and other activities. The San Antonio Live- TJSSA • 1821 Deer Trail • Floresville, Texas 78114 Dear Simmental/Simbrah Supporter: We believe that you want to make sure the next generation of SimGenetics breeders has the ability to succeed in this dynamic industry. The American Junior Simmental Association (AJSA) has been conducting youth beef cattle educational programs since 1980. Using the beef industry as a focus, these programs help educate and develop future leaders. Not only does the program address everyday cattle management practices, it also builds self-esteem, develops decision-making skills, and teaches the importance of communication and teamwork. The enthusiasm and excitement at these events is phenomenal, and the positive attitudes of the participants are truly inspirational. Each year the AJSA National Classic event is held in a different state across the nation. On July 5th-12th, the 2015 National Classic will be hosted by the state of Texas at the Brazos County Expo Center in Bryan, Texas. Over 500 AJSA members and their families will travel from across the United States and the juniors will spend the week competing in a cattle show as well as leadership development contests and fun activities. They will also have the opportunity to tour Texas A&M University and other local attractions. This event is run by volunteers from the host state and financed almost entirely through donations. The Texas Simmental/Simbrah Association (TSSA) and the Texas Junior Simmental/Simbrah Association (TJSSA) are working together to ensure that this National Classic is the best ever and we need your help. We’re asking for your sponsorship of this important event that will highlight the state’s SimGenetics to include our young people, breeders, educational programs, and businesses. We’ve created several prestigious sponsorship levels and we’re asking that you help us bring the AJSA National Classic to Texas by donating at one of these levels. Your sponsorship will be acknowledged and advertised in news releases leading up to the National Classic and continuously throughout the weeklong event. Other levels are also available and welcome, and there is an opportunity to help that will fit every budget. Please see the home page of the association’s website, www.texassimmentalsimbrah.com for complete details on sponsorship levels. We greatly appreciate your support of our youth programs. Please make a commitment now to join our list of sponsors and help make the 2015 AJSA National Classic in Texas an event to remember. We also invite you to mark your calendar and save the date to join us in Bryan/College Station in 2015. If you have any questions or suggestions about sponsorship opportunities or need more information about the 2015 AJSA National Classic, please feel free to call me for further discussion at (210) 2697136 or contact me by email at [email protected]. Sincerely, Jennifer Freasier Kincaid, TJSSA Adviser/2015 Event Coordinator stock Show and Rodeo has contributed over 134.6 million dollars to education in the form of scholarships. For those who qualify, exhibitors may participate in the Simmental Simbrah Super Bowl, held in conjunction with the San Antonio Livestock Show on Wednesday, February 18th. Cash prizes are awarded in all classes, showmanship, as well as randomly chosen scholarships. This show would not happen without the support of the generous Simmental and Simbrah breeders. Immediately following San Antonio, exhibitors can head west for another great opportunity to show off their animals. The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo is held February 13th through March 1st. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, March 3rd-22nd, has so much to see and do, from shopping, food, rides, exhibits, and even concerts. Hous-ton provides not only a great stock show, but also great opportunities to earn scholarships as well. The Exhibitor, Area Go Texas, Texas FFA and Texas 4-H scholarships are just some of the many available to high school and college students. And don’t forget about the TJSSA annual meeting held at Houston! Following Houston and rounding out a very busy stock show season, the Austin Livestock Show and Rodeo takes place March 18th-28th. This summer will be an extremely busy one for the TJSSA.
