GUIDE
A
Come explore and share
your experiences
The City of Greater Dandenong has a rich and
diverse history. It is home to more than 150
different nationalities and showcases the best
of multicultural Melbourne.
Springvale is a mecca for flavours of Asia and
is fast becoming the place to go not only to
dine but also to buy your unique and fresh
ingredients to cook at home.
Central Dandenong has undergone a dramatic
transformation in recent years with new
apartment living, cutting–edge corporate
headquarters, an award-winning main street
boulevard, with a host of new cafes, shops and
restaurants.
Noble Park is the smallest centre, nestled
between Dandenong and Springvale and is
quickly becoming the newest go-to suburb
for tasty food.
It is less than 30 minutes from Melbourne CBD,
and is a hive of activity thanks to the iconic
Dandenong Market, exotic cultural precincts
and the incredible Drum Theatre, Walker Street
Gallery and Arts Centre.
The food culture is a celebration of the valuable
contributions made by Indigenous Australians
and people from all over the world who came
to make their home here.

GREAT BITES
WELCOME
“Melbourne has an
absolute jewel in
Greater Dandenong.
I just love the
diversity and every
time I come out
there’s something
beautiful, different,
exotic...
People are true to their cultural
backgrounds. You’re not getting a
dumbed down version, you’re getting
the real deal. It’s one of those great
places that I think is just going to get
more interesting and more exciting.
It’s as exciting as travelling overseas
except you’ve got all these experiences
within one place. The mix of cuisines is
unique in the world - nowhere else is
there the same mix of food and culture.”
Maeve O’Meara
Maeve loves Dandenong and runs tours of the
area. Visit gourmetsafaris.com.au. For more
information on other local tours see page 44

Uncle’s Smallgoods and Young Uncles Café
Bert Glinka and brother-in-law, Brendan D’Amelio
both owners of Uncle’s, grew up visiting this iconic
Dandenong deli. When the original owners told
them they were thinking of retiring, the boys
jumped at the chance to buy the businesses.
They haven’t changed the old fashioned time
honoured methods, handcrafting and wood
smoking smallgoods on site daily. Straight out of
the smokehouse customers come for sausages,
hams, bacon and much more. Uncle’s remains
a meeting place for local ‘Poles’. In 2014, Young
Uncle’s Café opened next door serving 5 senses

Tengri Tag
H
Uyghur
Tengri Tag is a Uyghur (pronounced wee-gar)
family owned restaurant. Uyghurs, are
Turkic-speaking people who live in landlocked
Xinjiang, between Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
The culture and cuisine is unique. Tengri Tag’s
signature dishes include lagman, fortifying
hand-pulled noodles that you have to hunch
over the table to eat. They are long, about a metre
and irregular in thickness and shape. The dense
noodles are made fresh every morning with a
variety of stir-fried capsicum sauces - lamb, beef,
chicken, eggplant, tofu; polos (rice platters also
known as pilaf) with lamb or chicken. From the
grill comes sword-like skewers of lamb, not
super-charry, but with good smoky flavour and
well-spiced with cumin and chilli. The venue is
both a restaurant and reception venue catering
for up to 250 people.

Lakshmi Vilas Café
Lakshmi Vilas Café (Indian) is all about freshness,
originality and taste, specialising in vegetarian
food and meals for people with food intolerances.
The word tiffin occupies a special place for Thalis,
traditional Indian home food which is served in a
stainless steel platter with little bowls consisting
of a wide variety of different dishes including roti,
vegetarian curries, dahl and dessert. The word
Tiffin evokes wonderful memories for the Indian
Indian
community which the literal translation means
snacks. Tiffins come in different forms and names.
They are crunchy, soft, spicy, sweet and fiery
hot, they can be steamed or shallow fried.
These savoury and sweet treats have become
the talk of the town, capturing the hearts of the
adventurous
palettes.
