Welcome to 2015...this school year is going by fast! We have had a great
start to the year and are excited about all the great things for the remainder of the year. Second semester will be filled with many more activities and
opportunities for our students. But first thing first, Final Exams.
Please talk to your student about being ready for finals, studying hard, and
doing their very best as we head into the end of the semester. This is a very
important time for the students so your support is much appreciated. This
will be the first time for our 8th graders taking finals so please emphasize
the importance of this week.
At the start of the year we really focused on building community and respect
with the students. The part of the CORE that we will focus on for the next
few weeks is Ownership. We will be talking to our students about taking
ownership of their learning and really focusing on their academics as we
head into final week of the semester (Jan. 20-22).

Dear Parents,
To ensure the safety of our students and staff, the Sun Prairie Area School District has adopted a policy that became effective at the start of the 2008-09 school year. All visitors to our schools must show
a photo I.D. and register in the office prior to entering the main areas of the school or the classrooms.
The term “all visitors” includes parents, volunteers, and anyone coming into the school.
Please remember that we have the best interests of our students in mind. Some of the individuals
who will be greeting you and asking for your I.D. may not know the parents and volunteers. They will quickly get to know
you, which will help to expedite the safety process as the year goes on.
Our responsibility is to keep our students and staff as safe as possible. Knowing who is visiting our schools will help us do
that. We welcome any feedback you have regarding this new policy.

School Closing News
Emergency School Closing
The Sun Prairie Area School District has begun using a new
electronic notification system to communicate with parents and
guardians in a more timely and efficient manner.
In the event of a weather-related school closing or other emergency, the system allows the district to contact the guardians of
each student at 6 different telephone numbers,
2 email addresses, and via 1 text message simultaneously.
In less than 15 minutes, we are able to call, email and text
the guardians of all 7,000 students in the district at multiple
phone numbers! As in the past, school closing information will
also be posted on the district website and can be obtained by
listening to the following radio and television stations:

Annual Science Fair
Cardinal Heights will be holding its 1st Annual CHUMS
Science Fair on Tuesday, February 3rd from 6:00-8:00
p.m. This will take place during the 8th Grade Course
Expo night. Students who participate will present their
experiments to be judged by a panel of teachers and local business representatives and
will be eligible for prizes. Only 9th graders will compete in the Science Fair, but 8th graders and their families are welcome to walk through to see what they could be part of next
year! Biology teachers at Cardinal Heights will be able to answer any questions that you
may have about this event.
Attendance Reminder
With the onset of winter we start to see more students out ill and for more
days at a time. If your child is out sick for 3 or more consecutive days, we ask
that you get a doctor’s note to medically excuse those days. Parents may excuse up to ten days per year for illness or personal reasons; any more than
that may not be excused. Any days covered by a medical excuse are exempt
from that 10-day count and help to keep your child’s attendance in good standing.

2014 Course Expo/ Career Night At Cardinal Heights
When: Tuesday February 3rd, 2015

Where: Cardinal Heights Cafeteria/Commons
Cardinal Heights will be holding a Course Expo and Business Education Partnership Career Night.
Teachers will display past student work and answer questions about courses within their department.
Area businesses will also be available to discuss how their work relates to the course offerings and vice
versa. This is a fantastic opportunity for students and parents to learn more about course offerings and
career paths.
PBIS Corner
How are we using PBIS to teach our students?
One of Cardinal Heights’ commitments is to a positive school climate where
each each student can perform their best. We utilize a national system of practices
called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to assist in this effort.
Each month we will be running a short article in this newsletter to inform you about PBIS, how we are
implementing it at Cardinal Heights, and the successes we have using it. To review PBIS basics, please
view earlier newsletters or the school website. This month we are taking a moment to look at how we
are teaching positive expectations to students.
Positive student expectations have been outlined in our Cardinal CORE matrix. We do not believe it is enough to simply list the expectations and have students live up to them. We take several
steps throughout the year to reinforce these ideas. Time is spent during the first week of the year outlining positive behaviors in the areas of community, ownership, respect, and ensuring safety. This is
done through group discussions, videos, and other group activities. Spending time on our expectations
at the beginning of the year sets a positive tone in our school and decreases discipline issues throughout the school year. When data shows that there is a particular area that needs reinforcing, we create
lessons that reinforce those expectations. For example, if we notice that students are becoming increasingly tardy for class we will create a lesson that will be delivered to all students to help correct this.
Incentives may also be used in order to address the issue. When major events are upcoming or a time
period where we can predict that expectations will need to be reinforced, we also implement lessons to
remind students of how they should conduct themselves. An example of this would be reinforcing expectations of students at athletic events, dances, and assemblies prior to Homecoming week in the Fall.
We also reinforce expectations by rewarding students (this will be covered in next month’s article).

2015-2016 Open Enrollment Information
OPEN ENROLLMENT
Wisconsin’s public school open enrollment program
allows parents to apply for their children to attend school
in another school district other than the one in which they live.
The open enrollment application period for the
2015-2016 school year is February 2, 2015 - April 30, 2015.
Parents can apply online at http://oe.dpi.wi.gov/.
Online applications are recommended. However, paper applications may be printed from the Wisconsin
Department of Public Instruction website and delivered to the Sun Prairie School District Office at 501
S. Bird Street no later than April 30, 2015 by 4:00 pm.

Solo & Ensemble Season is coming! – Saturday February 7, 2015 @ Patrick Marsh
Students have all selected a solo or duet for this important project. This is a long-term project to help foster individual musicianship and growth.
Students have 2 options for their performance grade:
Saturday 2/7/15 – at the official WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival, Patrick Marsh

Please consider helping out to make this event a success on Saturday February 7, 2015. It takes a couple hundred volunteers to put on this festival
between donating food, being a door monitor, helping in the cafeteria, and helping set up and tear down.
CHUMS Wind Symphony invited to perform at National Band Association-Wisconsin Chapter.
The Cardinal Heights Wind Symphony has been invited to perform as part of the National Band Association-Wisconsin Chapter convention on
January 23, 7:00 P.M. at the Performing Arts Center in Wisconsin Rapids. This convention brings together music educators from across Wisconsin and we are excited for the opportunity for our students to share their music-making with this audience.
To help prepare for this performance we have added two rehearsals:

The” NBA” was organized for the purpose of promoting the musical and educational significance of bands and is dedicated to the attainment of a

Sun Prairie Middle School Jazz Festival - Friday, February 20 @ Sun Prairie High School:
All Middle School jazz students (Prairie View, Patrick Marsh and Cardinal Heights) will have a great opportunity to work with clinicians to work
on swing feel, style, listening, and improvisation. Students will have clinics during the school day at Cardinal Heights. After school we'll bus up
to the High School for improvisation and rhythm section clinic togethers. The day concludes with a free concert featuring all 5 bands and our
clinicians!
Wind Symphony & 9th Grade Band Tour, March 5 - 6:
Thursday, March 5th the Wind Symphony and 9th grade band will depart for clinics in the Fox Valley area. Bands will have the privilage of
working music faculty and students at Lawrence University. Permission slips and itineraries will be coming home with students soon. Cost is
expected to be around $85 – fundraising opportunities still, exist. Visit spbb.org for more information.

Questions On Your Google Drive?
Google Drive for Parents & Students
Google Drive provides students a resource to do their homework, with a word processor,
spreadsheet, and presentation software. Since it is on the Internet, students can access their files
from any computer, anywhere in the world, where they have access to the Internet. Google
Drive also offers online storage for students to collaborate, share and save work via the web.

To help our parents and students at home, we have some tips to help use Google Drive.
Web Browsers:
Google Drive is Internet Based, and must be accessed through a web browser.
We find that it works best in Chrome, a free download.
**Computers must have access to the Internet.
Access to Site:
Students must use the link on the For Students page on the district website
to access the Sun Prairie School District Google Drive Home Page (this is different than just
opening Google Drive on the web or if you currently operate Google Drive on your home computer).
The Sun Prairie Google Drive site is a secure site that is not open to the entire web so
documents and account information is protected). Students do not have access to gmail
(google email) on the Sun Prairie Google Drive site.

Students use the same username and password that they set at school.
Forgotten Passwords:
Students must contact their teacher or media specialist to request a password change.
Transferring Files:
Google Drive has options for transferring files (students can load all of their information
online and not have to use a flash drive)13
UploadStudents can upload and store files from any program to their Sun Prairie Google Drive account.
Students can convert files from MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This will allow them to edit their files.
Students can export their Google documents to Microsoft word.
Students who use Microsoft tools at home can either upload the files to the Sun Prairie Google Drive page before
they come to school or bring a flash drive with their documents to upload them at school.

Advanced Learner Program
Happy December to everyone from the Advanced Learners Resource Department! There is
a lot going on for students during these busy months.
• Several students have entered the Yahara River Writers Anthology competition.
Entries included poems, short stories and editorials. Our students did phenomenal work.
We will find out in January who has advanced to the Dane County level of competition.
• We have 10 students practicing several times a week to prepare for the 2015 National Science Bowl Regional Competition which will be held in January on the UW Madison campus. These students are Juan
Jimenez, Aidan Schutter, Dhanush Nanjunda, Thejasshri Vembakka, Abhinav Janamanchi, Halah Idrissi, Isaac
Schluesche, Laya Lemley, Ashlyn Narman
• During Homeroom Club Math24 meets - we need more players! Come join Mr. Maselter and Mrs. Enstad to
complete. It is a fast moving math competition. There will a regional competition coming up in March. Get your
Homeroom Exit Card today.

FFA and Agriculture News
CHUMS FFA AND AG CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS,
LEADERSHIP AND THE FLYWAYS MUSEUM
Students involved with the CHUMS Ag and Natural Resources program have been learning while doing a variety
of activities.
•
Students have attended the SLW (Sectional Leadership Workshop) conference at Wisconsin Heights. This trip
was combined with our High School FFA students. Students worked on learning more about leadership and
the responsibilities that are involved with being a good leader. They also developed relationships with each
other and students from across the state.
•
Two students attended the all day Saturday FFA Fire Leadership Conference at UW Madison. They worked
with students from around the area to learn more about themselves and leadership in general.
•
Twenty FFA and Natural Resources and Wildlife Management students visited the Flyways Museum this fall.
They learned about the importance of wetlands as flood control, water purification and habitat. Students received a personal tour and had a chance to see different waterfowl species that ranged in size from the huge
trumpeter swan to the miniature green and blue winged teal.

The CHUMS FFA has selected different groups of students to lead various projects and committees this year.
A talented group of 8th graders that were led by Alec Silbernagel and Chandler Koch planned this year’s
Christmas party. They did a great job. The food, drink and snacks that were provided by other committee
members were appreciated by all. Roughly thirty students participated in the archery contest and another ten
or more students watched videos, played games and socialized while in the classroom.

The Ag program has successfully completed the second annual “North Bristol Sportsman's Club Field Day.
Students spent that Friday working on the final legs of their Hunter Safety certification, Bow hunting certification principles and some introductory information related to Trapper education and Boat safety. The day included a wild game feed, dog training and foundational skills in archery. The field day was fun for all that
were involved. People interested in this class are encouraged to ask a student that is currently in the class titled “Natural Resources and Wildlife Management” about their experience. The North Bristol Sportsman’s
Club has had a very positive impact on many of our student’s lives. We are thankful during this holiday season
to have such a good relationship with the Club.
