Commerce Fishing Contest was
held Saturday, Jan. 17 on Lawrence
Lake in Outing. 138 people regis-

New staff at Essentia’s Cancer Center
The Cancer Center at
Essentia Health–St. Joseph’s
Medical Center welcomes
two additional staff to its
team of experts: Hollie
Swanson, RN, Clinical
Research Nurse and Erin
Kennedy, RN, Cancer Patient
Navigator.
Swanson and her family
are proud and active members
of the Brainerd Lakes community for over 20 years. She
received bachelor degrees in
Nursing
and
Business
Administration from Bemidji
State University, and is also
certified as a chemotherapy/
biotherapy infusion nurse.
“Having a background in
oncology has prepared me to
be part of the Cancer Care
team to help educate and support patients and their families through the oncology
journey”, explains Swanson.
“A clinical trial can offer a
patient the opportunity to
help themselves and others
improve how cancer is treated
in the future. I’m excited to
join the Cancer Care team and
help guide patients through
the clinical trial process and
take part in the future of cancer treatment.”
Expanding patient navigation services, Erin Kennedy,
RN, joins Missy Laposky,
RN, BA, OCN. Kennedy
moved to the Brainerd Lakes
Area seven years ago with her
family and most recently
worked at CRMC as a patient
navigator. Prior to becoming
a clinical patient navigator
Kennedy worked as an operating room nurse.
“I am excited about working here. My children attend
school here, my husband
works in Baxter and we are
involved in youth hockey and
basketball. Being a part of
Essentia Health has given me
a sense of community and a
feeling of providing excellent
care close to home. I am
excited to join the Cancer
Center team that now has two
experienced navigators.”
The Cancer Center team
includes oncology and hematology physicians and nurse
practitioner, specialized surgeons, radiologists and
pathologists, dieticians, specialized nurses and therapists,
a nurse navigator, social
worker, clinical research
nurse, as well as 26 team
Care ‘N Share will be
hosting a community meal
each Wednesday from 5 to 6
p.m.

in the fellowship hall in the
Emily Wesleyan Church on
Highway 6 in Emily.

‘Bone Builders’
group in Outing
The Outing RSVP Bone
Builders program helps prevent and reverse osteoporosis,
improves balance, enhances
energy and well-being,
increases socialization, and
provides senior-friendly health
information. Volunteer trainers
lead Bone Builders sessions
each Tuesday and Thursday
from 9 to 10 a.m. at the
Outing/Crooked Lake Township Hall on Highway 6 in
Outing. There is no charge for
the sessions, and participants
can join an ongoing class at
any time. The program, promoted by Retired Seniors
Volunteer Program, is sponsored by the Outing Seniors
to serve seniors in Outing,
Emily, and Fifty Lakes.
If you like to sew, the
Emily Quilters Group can use
your help!
The group is seeking
pieces of cotton material to
finish quilts. Also needed are
sheets to serve as quilt backings—sheets can be new or
used but still in good shape.

Emily City Hall, the C-I

The group meets each
Monday from 9 a.m. to noon
at Emily City Hall, sewing
fabric squares into quilts that
are given to the Retired
Senior Volunteers Program
(RSVP). In turn, RSVP distributes the quilts to Crow
Wing County residents who
can benefit from them.
Workers are reimbursed for
round-trip mileage from their
home to city hall.
Dog, cat licenses
required in Emily
The city of Emily reminds
all dog and cat owners that
the city requires licenses for
the animals and January is the
time to renew your license for
2010. If you do not have a
license, stop by the city
clerk’s office during regular
business hours to purchase
one; please bring a copy of
the latest record of your pet’s
shots from your veterinarian.
Cost of a new license is $5,
and renewed licenses are $2.
