SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM:
Parishioners who would like to have their child
baptized at St. Leo’s are requested to call Father Hahn at the
Parish Office to personally schedule an appointment to meet
with him to discuss this great Sacrament. Normally Baptisms
are held on the first Sunday of each month, after our 11:00 am
Mass, or approximately at 12:15 pm. At least one sponsor
must be a practicing Catholic, age 16 or older, Confirmed, and
must present a sponsor certificate if from another parish.
Parents must be registered members of St. Leo’s parish.
SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY:
Couples contemplating marriage must contact Fr.
Peter Hahn, at the Parish office, at least one year before the
date of the intended marriage. Church date and arrangements
should precede all other wedding plans. Marriages may be
scheduled on Saturdays at 11:00 am or 2:00 pm.

“[T]hey returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and
became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon Him.”
(Luke 2: 39-40)
Today, we gather on this great Feast of the Holy Family. We pause, in awe and wonder, as we
continue in this Octave of Christmas, these eight special days of celebration, that begin on Christmas and
ends on January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God.
On this Sunday within that special Octave, we gather on this Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary
and Joseph. We reflect upon how that family lived in love, how God blessed Mary and Joseph in a most
remarkable way in the presence of His Son. And, we are then called to reflect upon the remarkable gift that is
ours in our “family”, in which God brings us together so that all of us may grow in our experience of the love
of God.
Married Love is so distorted these days by so many voices in our culture. There are so many attempts
to reduce it to something that is just human, but it is actually an expression of the very love of God. We
know who God is – an eternal expression of love that is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, One God who creates all
living things. And we are called to see what married life and married love is, also this “permanent,
unconditional and life giving” expression of love. We thank God in a most special way for our families,
those persons to whom we have been joined by God in the genius of His Creative Love.
How grateful I am to God for the family that formed me in His love and in our Catholic faith. Each
day, I pray for my father, who was called home to God back in 1987. I pray for my mother, who just turned
93 last month; how she and my dad were people of such faith and taught me and my brothers and sister so
much about God’s love. I pray for them and for their families, as I pray for all of you each day, that all our
families may be those special places of God’s love.
God has called us to be part of this Parish Family of Saint Leo the Great, and certainly these days of
Christmas are a special time for us to thank God for one another. I can’t begin to thank all for your cards and
gifts over these past days and weeks. I think of your great example of faith and generosity this past year; the
remarkable response that so many of you have made to our Capital Campaign; those special collections
throughout the year, those countless gifts that we collected for the poor and needy in our Christmas Giving
Tree, the volunteer efforts of so many, and, most recently, to all who have worked so hard to participate in
our Liturgies, to all involved in our Music Ministry, to those who have decorated our Church for these most
glorious days of celebration.
We look now, to this Thursday when we will begin a new year with our Masses for the Solemnity of
Mary, the Mother of God. May this year be a most blessed one for all of us so that we might be filled with
God’s love and our families grow in holiness, sustained by Mary’s intercession now, throughout 2015, and
unto the eternal life meant for us. Happy New Year.

New Memory Support Center
St. Anne’s Retirement Community is now accepting
applications for their new Memory Support Center
designed to meet the skilled nursing care needs of
persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
The beautifully renovated center is licensed to care
for up to 51 residents and features many different

We would like to thank all of our parishioners who
purchased cookie trays to help combat world
hunger. 200 trays of cookies were sold. The
purchase of one cookie tray feeds over 350 people
one time with the help of the $15 from the sale of
the cookie tray along with in-kind gifts and matching
funds.
We would also like to mention that Weber
Advertising did all the photos for us for our 50th
Anniversary Celebration at no charge to St. Leo’s
(which was a $4,000 savings to the Church) and in
exchange St. Leo’s agreed to sell 200 trays of
cookies. Thank you for helping us fulfill this
commitment and supporting this worthy cause

Congratulations to Saint Leo the Great Catholic
School for being reaccredited by The Middle States
Association of College and Schools! Three external
evaluators poured over our 200 page self-study
document and spent 3 days visiting our classrooms and
meeting with key stakeholders. They were looking for
evidence of excellent school quality, student
achievement, and innovative plans that foster continuous
school improvement.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
As we approach the new year, make a
resolution to set aside time each week to
visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. We
have Adoration every Tuesday beginning
at 7:00 am through Wednesday ending at
6:45 pm in our Chapel. In the words of
Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta,
“Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you
will spend on earth!”

The 42nd March for Life
The 42nd March for Life will
take place in Washington,
D.C. on Thursday, January
22 nd ,
2015. Catholics
Defending Life of Lancaster
PA (CDL) has hired 5
buses to transport those willing to attend. On that day,
bus departure is scheduled for 8:15 am at St. Leo
Church following Mass at 7:00 am. Bus fare is $10 per
person and $25 per family. Reduced fare and free bus
seats are available for the mere asking. Reservations
are a must! Persons able to attend the 2015 March and
persons unable to attend but willing to sponsor someone
in their place should phone Rosie at 397-6966.
12th Night Festival
Our parish will host the 12th Night Festival of Choirs
Concert on Sunday, January 4th, 2015, at 2:00 pm.
Choirs from parishes in the Lancaster Deanery will
be singing beautiful Christmas music with the
“Halleluia Chorus” as the finale. A reception will be
held in the School Gym following the concert. Please
come and enjoy this wonderful music event as we
raise our voices to celebrate our Lord’s birth.

World Meeting of Families
"Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on
earth about anything for which they are to pray, it
shall be granted to them by My heavenly Father. For
where two or three are gathered together in my
name, there I am in the midst of them. " Mt 18:19-20
The next World Meeting of Families will be held
on September 22-27, 2015 in Philadelphia. This
meeting is held every three years and is
sponsored by the Holy See’s Pontifical Council
for the Family. It is the largest Catholic gathering
of families. People come from all over the world
in faithful celebration of the family—the sanctuary
of love and life. This year’s theme is “Love Is Our
Mission: The Family Fully Alive”. Following is a
prayer prepared especially for families by Pope
Francis in anticipation of the September meeting
We encourage you to keep it and say it daily for
your family and all the families of the world.
Saint Leo's has a dedicated group of
parishioners who receive prayer requests by
email from the Parish Office. Prayer requests
for God's will, for your needs and for others
are sent or called into the office and an email
request for prayer goes out to those who are
participants in this prayer ministry.

The Order of Malta in the Lancaster
Region will host the Annual Sanctity of
Life Mass on Tuesday, January 12th, at
7:00 pm at St. Anthony of Padua
Church, 501 East Orange Street,
Lancaster. The Most Reverend Ronald
W. Gainer, Bishop of Harrisburg, will be
the Principal Celebrant and Homilist. Bishop Gainer is
well known for his gentle, careful and uncompromising
advocacy of the sanctity and dignity of every human life.

Youth Ministry Calendar

Catholicism is an entire way of life. We might be familiar
with different aspects of the Catholic Faith. But how
does it fit together? And what difference does it make
for our lives. SYMBOLON: The Catholic Faith Explained
opens up the “big picture” of the Catholic Faith in a way
that helps us know it, live it and articulate it to others.
Through beautifully crafted teaching and state-of-the-art
-video, speaker and theologian Dr. Edward Sri leads a
team of dynamic teachers who provide a clear and
comprehensive explanation of the Catholic Faith.
YOUTH RALLY AND MARCH FOR LIFE:
Each year on the morning of the
National March for Life, 28,000
youth gather from around the nation
to attend the Youth Rally and Mass
for Life hosted by the Archdiocese of
Washington. This year, Saint Leo the Great Parish will
take one coach bus for our 7th – 12th grade youth and
their chaperones. All 7th – 12th graders are invited to join
us on Thursday, January 22nd, 2015. We will leave Saint
Leo’s by coach bus at 4:45 am and return here at
approximately 7:30 pm. We will be at the DC Armory for
the youth rally and Holy Mass and then take the metro to
the National Mall for the National March for Life and
participate in this peaceful march to the Supreme Court
building. As Catholic Americans, this an opportunity for
our young church to pray, celebrate the Eucharist and
then exercise their constitutional right to stand for life.
We will need adults who have clearances through the
Diocese of Harrisburg as chaperones. Please register
early as there are a limited number of tickets allotted to
our parish. There is no cost for this day, except each
person is asked to bring a bag lunch and drink as well as
money to purchase a fast food dinner on the way home.

CATHOLIC HEART WORKCAMP 2015
All 8th – 12th graders are invited to journey with us June
20th-26th, 2015 as we travel to Groton, MA to serve the
poor and marginalized in that community. This week
long adventure leaves a life-long impact on those we
serve and on those that serve. The cost is $400 and
fundraising opportunities are available. For more

If you are in 8th – 12th grade, please prayerfully consider
joining us for this life-changing retreat experience on
June 12th-14th, 2015 at Franciscan University. The
conference combines awesome talks, incredible music,
praise and worship, adoration, time for prayer and
fellowship, entertainment and anointed liturgies.
Basically it is a weekend to be rocked by God, to get
serious about life in Christ and His Church, and to learn
to live the Truth of the Gospel. The cost is $200 and

First Friday Prayer Group
This group of parishioners meets on the 1st
Friday of each month to pray for their
families. All are welcome to join them for
their next meeting on Friday, January 2nd,
from 1:00-2:00 pm in the Daily Chapel. If
you have questions or would like more

A debonair, smartly tailored angel (Cary Grant) uses his heavenly powers to help the neglected wife (Loretta Young) of a
busy Episcopalian bishop (David Niven) renew her husband's ministry to those in need rather than in raising the money
for a new cathedral. Most of the family will find it charming entertainment. (A-II) (NR)
A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1951)
This British version of the Dickens' classic has worn well over the years with its 19th-century London setting and the
ghostly visitations that are done simply but with considerable flair. The result is dandy family viewing. (A-I) (NR)
CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS (2004)
Delightful yuletide comedy about a Chicago couple (Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis) who boycott Christmas after their
daughter leaves home to join the Peace Corps, sparking unforeseen reactions from their militantly merry neighbors (led
by Dan Aykroyd). Some suggestive humor, comic violence and mildly crude language. (A-II) (PG)
COME TO THE STABLE (1949)
Sentimental but amusing picture from Clare Booth Luce's story of two French nuns (Loretta Young and Celeste Holm)
trying to establish a hospital in New England with some help from an eccentric artist (Elsa Lanchester) and a cynical
songwriter (Hugh Marlowe). Unpretentious, generally high-minded fun. (A-I) (NR)
THE FOURTH WISE MAN (1985)
Adaptation of Henry Van Dyke's vintage short story "The Other Wise Man," tells of a fourth Magi (Martin Sheen) who is
delayed in following the star to Bethlehem, then finally catches up with it in Jerusalem some 33 years later in an
encounter which fulfills his life's search for truth. Family entertainment with the universal theme of bettering oneself by
helping others. (A-I) (NR)
JOYEUX NOEL (2006)
Intensely moving World War I tale of soldiers -- Scottish, French and German -- who spontaneously agree to a ceasefire on the Western front on Christmas Eve as they hear carols wafting from the enemy's trenches, intermingle and bond
on a humanistic level, to the eventual disdain of their superiors. It conveys a powerful message about the senselessness
of war, while there is an admirable religious underpinning in the character of a dedicated Anglican priest (Gary Lewis)
who brings everyone together for a liturgy on that special night. Partially in English, partially subtitled. Battlefield violence
with death, some profanity and crude language, discreet husband-wife bedroom scene. (A-II) (PG-13)
THE NATIVITY STORY (2006)
Dramatization of the New Testament birth narratives from the Annunciation to the birth of Jesus. Mike Rich's screenplay
manages to flesh out Mary and Joseph while remaining faithful to Scripture, poignantly suggesting the humanity beneath

THE POLAR EXPRESS (2004)
Visually captivating animated fantasy -- in which Tom Hanks plays five separate roles -- about a doubting young boy

(Mildred Natwick) deliver her infant son on Christmas Eve, then take the babe with them as they are pursued across a
desert wasteland. Dedicated by director John Ford to Western actor Harry Carey, Sr., the story may be unabashedly
sentimental and the action romanticized, but its lyrical images and religious resonances celebrate the myth of the Old

All women of the Diocese are warmly
invited to attend a Prayer Shawl Retreat
on Saturday, January 17th, 2015 from
10:00 am to 2:00 pm. at the Diocesan
Center in Harrisburg. The program,
hosted by the Harrisburg Diocesan
Council of Catholic Women's Organization Commission,
will include prayer, knitting/crocheting, fellowship and
lunch. Beginners are welcome to be part of this time of
fellowship and sharing of this special ministry. If you
have a favorite pattern or two, please let them have it
beforehand to copy and share at the workshop. The
program is free but advance registration is required by
