LEO THE GREAT CATHOLIC CHURCH~~~2427 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17601~~~OCTOBER 30, 2016 “But you [Lord] have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and you overlook people’s sins that they may repent.” (Wisdom 11:23) We hear these words from our First Reading this Sunday from the Book of Wisdom. What wonderfully prophetic words they are; written about 100 years before the birth of Christ, as they proclaim the promise of God to send a Savior, by whose Passion and Death, we receive the incomparable gift of the forgiveness of our sins. We see that call to repentance, the essence of life here on earth, to struggle in our weakness, to acknowledge our sins, and then to allow God’s grace to transform us. We come today, as we do each year, beginning November with two most important feasts, the Feast of All Saints and the Feast of All Souls. These days bring to mind a most important reality, the judgment that awaits each of us at death. We see how the Church here on earth is united to the Church that spans all places and times as we, “The Church Militant” are united to “The Church Suffering”, those souls in Purgatory that endure a time of trial and waiting, and also with “The Church Triumphant”, those holy men and women who have gone before us and now, and for all eternity, experience the fullness of God’s life in the glory of heaven. What a blessed communion we share with all the saints, some, who are famous and historic figures whose heroic faith has been formally recognized by their public canonization and then all the others, known only to God, maybe our own parents and grandparents, or brothers or sisters, who quietly and faithfully lived their union with Christ in this life and now are with Him forever. And for those in Purgatory, we intercede for them. We pray and offer sacrifices that they soon may be released from their suffering and purification. We will celebrate a special Mass on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. for all of our Parishioners who have died this past year and all of us have an opportunity to remember our deceased loved ones through the special All Souls Envelopes, in 14 Masses offered for them during this month. In addition, the Church prescribes special acts of prayer and devotion that each of us can undertake that bring a Plenary Indulgence that effects the remission of all temporal punishment due to sin that we can receive or offer for a soul in purgatory so that he or she would immediately be brought into the glory of heaven. These special acts include: (1) visiting a cemetery and praying for the souls of the dead on any day from November 1-8; (2) visiting a Church on All Souls Day; (3) visiting a Church on the day of its Dedication, for us, on November 3rd; and (4) visiting a Church on the Feast Day of its Patron, for us, the Feast of Saint Leo the Great on November 10th. For one to receive this extraordinary gift, one must be baptized and in a state of grace, without any undue attachment to sin, receive Sacramental Confession and Holy Communion, and recite the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed and pray for the Intentions of our Holy Father. We begin November with these special days. We thank God for His infinite mercy and goodness as we long, for ourselves and our loved ones, to all experience one day, for all eternity, the infinite love and peace of God. Father Hahn 3 219 ST. This is our eternal consolation and hope. Then will our joy be truly complete. 4 We will be sprucing up a few of the gardens on Saturday, November 5th, after the 8:00 am Mass until noon or whenever we finish. LEO THE GREAT CATHOLIC CHURCH~~~2427 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17601~~~OCTOBER 30, 2016 Recitation of the Rosary Immigration and the Pursuit of Peace “It could be said that each mystery of the rosary, carefully meditated, sheds light on the mystery of man. ‘Cast your burden on the Lord and he will sustain you’ (Ps 55:23). To pray the rosary is to hand over our burdens to the merciful hearts of Christ and his Mother. The rosary does indeed ‘mark the rhythm of human life,’ bringing it into harmony with the “rhythm’ of God’s own life, in the joyful communion of the Holy Trinity, our life’s destiny and deepest longing. Through the rosary the faithful receive abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother Redeemer.” (Saint John Paul II) We are one human family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. Loving our neighbor has global dimensions and requires us to take up the Scriptural call to welcome the stranger among us—including immigrants seeking work, a safe home, education for their children, and a decent life for their families. Does the candidate support comprehensive immigration reform that offers a path to citizenship, treats immigrant workers fairly, prevents separation of families, maintains the integrity of our borders, respects the rule of law, and addresses the factors that compel people to leave their own countries? We are blessed to have the Rosary recited everyday here at St. Leo’s. All are welcome anytime to participate in this beautiful prayer. The schedule is as follows: Sunday: 10:30 am-Church; Monday-8:30 am-Chapel; Tuesday-5:00 pm-Chapel; Wednesday-9:15 am & 6:20 pm-Chapel; Thursday-7:00 pm-Rm. 1; Friday-9:30 am-Chapel; Saturday-4:00 pm-Church. We are called to promote peace and pursue justice at home and abroad and to seek peace in a world marred by violence and conflict. What is the candidates’s position on the promotion of peace at home and abroad? Is the candidate seeking a responsible and effective response for ending persecution of Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East and other parts of the world? If you would like more information, visit www.Hbgdiocese.org/vote. Buying GIFT CARDS at Saint Leo’s: The Easiest Way to Help!! ~~PRAYER BEFORE AN ELECTION~~ Did you know that every time you purchase gift cards at Saint Leo’s, a portion of that sale goes right towards lowering tuition for ALL families in our PSR (CCD) and Parish School? Giant (10%), Lands End (16%), Hot Z Pizza (15%), Fulton Steamboat Restaurant (25%), Lancaster Brewing Co. & Gibraltar (20%), Isaac’s (15%) and thousands more can be purchased after weekend Mass and in our school office Monday-Friday from 9:00 am4:00 pm. Please help us in this effort! Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness, so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. Beginning Experience Weekend The ecumenical Beginning Experience (BE) weekend is an approved Roman Catholic program designed for those who are suffering the loss of a spouse through death, divorce or separation. Hundreds of persons have been helped to move towards successful, productive, and happy lives by attending one of these weekends. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment, so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. The weekend is led by people who have gone through this loss and are trained in facilitating the program. The next weekend will be held on November 4th-6th at the beautiful Camp Hebron, Halifax, PA. If you would like more information about this program, go the Diocesan website: www.hbgdiocese.org and click on the marriage and family link or you can check out: www.beginningexperience.org. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Please plan to vote on November 8th. Every vote counts!!! 7 219 ST. The clothing giveaway will be held at San Juan Bautista’s Plaza on Saturday, November 12th. To support the significant needs, donations will be received immediately. We have hundreds of less fortunate people who are desperately in need of warm attire. Let’s dig deep! We are asking for WINTER WEAR ONLY. Examples: Coats, Hats, Gloves, Sweaters, Winter Socks, Scarfs, Snow Pants, Boots, and Shoes. Blankets too!! We will accept winter wear for all ages and sizes. Please note, household items, spring and summer clothing will NOT be accepted. This post abortion retreat, will give you an opportunity to examine your abortion experience, identify the ways that the loss has impacted you in the past and present, and help to acknowledge any unresolved feelings that many struggle with after abortion. Because of the emotional numbness and secrecy that often surrounds an abortion experience, conflicting emotions both during and after the event may remain unresolved. These buried feelings can surface later and may be symptoms of post abortion trauma. Married couples, mothers, fathers, grandparents and siblings of aborted children, as well as persons who have been involved in the abortion industry have come to Rachel's Vineyard in search of peace and inner healing. The weekend is a lot of work but yields a fruitful harvest for all who are willing to labor there. Please accept this gift of healing as only our Lord can offer. We would greatly appreciate women’s, men’s and children’s clothes be bagged separately in large, tied trash bags. Please label each bag “CWH-Women’s”, “CWH-Men’s” or “CWH-Children’s”. This makes sorting much easier for our volunteers. You may drop the items off after Mass in the designated area. Thank you for your support! Come and let the healing begin on the weekend of December 2nd-4th, in York, PA. If you would like to register for this retreat or learn more, please contact Joy or Becky at 717-788-4959 or [email protected] or [email protected] Mentoring Couples Praying Like a Faithful Citizen If you are a couple committed to living a faithful, lifelong marriage based on Church teachings and would like to promote the beautiful vocation of marriage, being a Mentoring Couple might just be for you. You would have the opportunity to work with young engaged couples to prepare them for the Sacrament of Matrimony and help them discover the beauty and truth that God’s plan has for them in their marriage. Our action as Faithful Citizens should flow from prayer. When we pray, we experience God and we remember that he is in us and in all people, who are created in His image and have inherent dignity. If we want to truly be faithful citizens, we must know how to come to God in prayer, experience God in ourselves and others, and listen to the ways God is calling us to respond. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has suggested nine new ways to pray. To learn more, please go to their website: http://www.usccb.org/prayer-andworship/prayers-devotions/prayers/praying-like-a-faithfulcitizen.cfm. Any interested couple should call the Parish Office. A training session is being planned by the Diocese of Harrisburg for December 3rd, at St. Mary’s, Lancaster.
