It has been celebrated throughout the Church from the sixth century on. Originally celebrated in the East, the ancient title is the Dormition of Mary, or the Falling Asleep of Mary. The earliest writing we find of this feast is from the fourth century and it is written in the voice of St. John, whom Jesus entrusted Mary to the care of as He hung upon the cross. St. Therese Lay Carmelite Community Looking for something and you are not sure what? Are you wanting intimacy with God, a deeper way of prayer? Perhaps you are being called to Carmel. We’re lay Catholic people who belong to the secular branch of the Carmelite Order. Our community meetings are currently held at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Wildwood. If you think the Carmelite way might be for you, please contact Jackie Harig at 352.446.0445 or May Fischer at 352.771.1084. Through Carmelite studying, prayer and insight, your life will be transformed. The August 20-21 second collection is held on behalf of the Florida Catholic ministry. The ministry depends on the generosity of those who want to support Catholic communications and evangelization. Your support of the Florida Catholic is greatly appreciated. Watch for the opportunity to subscribe or renew in the fall. As a Minister to the Sick who serves in the hospital ministry, I asked, what could God possibly have in store that can top the love and deep feeling of His Presence? It became obvious when a patient from India who neither spoke nor understood English, upon viewing the elevated Eucharist, immediately folded his hands and bowed his head in prayer. He then enfolded my hands in his as he said a prayer of thanksgiving. What proof that when God is present and our hearts are open to the Universal Language of His Love, verbal communication is not necessary. For information about the Ministry to the Sick, please call our office @ 728-5652. Did you know that the Bereavement Ministry is located in the Pastoral Care Office? Do you belong to another faith tradition and have questions about Catholicism? Searching for answers? Please consider joining our RCIA group. Gatherings are informal and your friend, spouse or fiancé is welcome to join you if you would like them to. Through weekly group gatherings, faith is deepened in both small and large group sharing.
