A Message from Fr. Mosimann
Dear Folks,
Without further ado: the winners of the 5th annual St. John the Apostle Photo Contest! This year was very interesting, with a few less
submittals than last year (without the Jumbotron reminders, a few folks told me that it slipped their mind). Also we have a repeat winner for
the first time ever: Mitch Catan is now our two time defending champion. Finally, the number one submission this year was sunsets. Tons
of pictures of sunsets. I eventually took to telling folks that it is hard to win with a picture of sunsets because it is hard to make the picture
stand out. But with that warning, our Grand Prize Winner has the sun featured prominently! Go figure, but let me explain:
Grand Prize ($75 gift Card): Mitch Catan, "Air Force Memorial" Ok,
so it is hard to win with a Sunset? But this picture shows
how! Context, framing, honor, character. Amazing reflection off the
memorial wall, the memorial with the pleasing lines soaring into the
blue sky, the Washington Monument on the horizon, the soldiers in
formation and at attention. This shot is a winner. Great work
Mitch! There is so much to love about this photo.
2nd Prize ($50 gift card): Mónica Hillary, "Face Painting". Great focus on the
foreground eye, and the face-paint. Nice depth of field and just a captivating
portrait. Frankly, every photo that Mónica submitted could have been a
winner, but we pulled this one out for the whimsey.
3rd Prize ($40 gift card): Ryan Feipel, "Caroline St, Key West". Love the
lighting, love the dramatic use of time lapse, love the sky. Great work
Ryan. Ryan also had several other pictures that were very near
winners. Bravo!
4th Prize ($40 gift card): Kristen Johnson,
“Henry Laughing at Bridge”. Just a pure joy.
Great to capture such a moment of
exuberance!
Turn the page for more winners!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
COAT DRIVE
Weekend of November 9th & 10th
The Knights of Columbus will be collecting new and
gently used coats the weekend of November 9th and 10th in the
church parking lot before and after all Masses. The Knights will
then deliver them to Assumption Parish in Keyser, WV, where a
large percentage of the population lives in poverty. The
parishioners of St. John have been very generous in prior years
and the generosity has been very appreciated. Look for a truck in
the church parking lot in which to place your much appreciated
donations.
ATTENTION STITCHERS!
The collection for the handmade scarves and hats
will take place the weekend of November 9th and
10th. This collection is done in conjunction with the
Annual Coat Drive. There will be a truck in the church
parking lot that weekend where items can be dropped off. All the
items will be delivered to West Virginia on Monday, November
11th. Since the Prayer Shawl Ministry packages each item
individually, if you have items now we would be glad to pick them
up prior to the November collection. Call Diane Reed at
703-443-9419. Thank you for all your hard work!

Virginia Bishops Paul S. Loverde of Arlington and Francis X.
DiLorenzo of Richmond have issued an election season statement
citing the vital role of a well-formed conscience when making
critical decisions involving civic life. The letter urges Catholics to
prayerfully prepare for this year’s elections in Virginia, as well as
when making any decisions about public policy. The Bishops
hearken back to a previously offered three-part framework
essential to conscience formation and call on Catholics to consider
each issue’s degree of importance. The letter can be found at the
Virginia Catholic Conference website at www.vacatholic.org.
