Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 14, 2016
Focus: Truth to Power
God’s word can both comfort and
challenge. Living out the word in a
prophetic way can provide us with
comfort—but also with times of
profound challenge.

From the Pastor
Done for another year. Thank you to all the volunteers that donate their
time to put on the BBQ. People do the trash, hours setting up white elephant
and dinner, standing in those hot pits, washing dishes and then there is tear
down and so many are other jobs, THANK YOU. BBQ 2016 brought in
$12000.00 even though we were down 200 dinners served from last year
and last year we were 100 down from the previous year. We don’t have all
the bills yet. When we’re sure we have everything a report will be printed in
the bulletin.
Next week Cross Catholic will be here to talk abut their work in the
missions and ask for our financial support. This is the group that passes out
envelopes asking for your name and other info. If you would rather not be
put on their mailing list, feel free to take an envelope home and return it the
week after with checks made out to St Augustine and
we’ll forward the money to Cross Catholic and add the
parish’s name to their mailing list.

Following Jesus sometimes means being
rejected by others. Speak an encouraging
word this week to someone you know
who is trying to follow Jesus through the
fire. Say a prayer for who is trying to follow Jesus through the fire. Say a prayer
for those who are discerning a call to the
priesthood or religious life.

Katie, Mary, and Bill would like again to thank everyone who volunteered to help for the kids games at
the Barbecue this year. The people in this parish are
absolutely amazing - we had total coverage during all
three shifts!!! Many of you worked more than one
shift as well!!
We also would like to thank those who helped with
the setup on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, as well
as the tear-down Sunday evening - all of it takes a lot
of time, and some of the pieces are heavy!!!
This year we added a "Craft's Table" with it's own
new Tent, which we hope to improve on next year.
Also, we replaced the Tents over the Prize table, giving much more shade and better coverage, not only to
the "customers" but also to the workers. We also altered one of the shooting games, replacing the older
"repeaters" with Single-shot small Tennis balls.
We could not do any of this without all of you, and
believe me, your help is truly appreciated!!!!

In today’s second reading, St. Paul
encourages us not to grow weary or
lose heart, but to persevere in
following Jesus. Our willingness to
give of ourselves, even in the face of conflict and
division, is one way to measure our discipleship.

We are still finding the words to share the
extraordinary experiences of our pilgrimage. Please
know that your prayers for our safety and your
generous support of our travel carried us through
some challenging moments. The young adults who
made this pilgrimage were courageous, kind and
generous in spirit to one another and to everyone
we encountered. We experienced historical sites
that were both beautiful and horrific. We walked
many miles and offered many hours of prayer for
your intentions and for the good of the whole
world. We recognized that together we are the body
of Christ and we made decisions accordingly.
Without a doubt, we experienced hope and promise
and a love of God that was unmatched previously in
our lives. We bring back a desire to share mercy, to
shine light in the darkness and to live our faith
boldly. We appreciate your continued support and
faith in each of us. Please continue to ask all of us
questions, because we really do want to share what
we saw, what we learned and how it has changed
us.

In today's Gospel, Jesus said to his disciples: "I have come to set the earth on fire,
and how I wish it were already blazing!
There is a baptism with which I must be
baptized, and how great is my anguish until it be accomplished!" Your gift to our St. Vincent de Paul to
assist those suffering in poverty will help set the
earth on fire with God's love. If you are giving to
the church electronically be sure to check the
SVDP box. Otherwise, you may still use the
SVDP envelopes in your church packets. Thank
You!
