And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was at table in
the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his
feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her
head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

Usher Ministry
At the present time, we are in need of Ushers for all of our Masses. You will be
welcoming people to worship, tending their needs, helping them find a place,
gathering their gifts during the collection, and bidding them farewell when the
Mass concludes. By nature, you are a person who wants to help. You have a deep faith in Christ,
a love for the Mass, and a place in a community. Your desire to serve will help the faithful worship
when they arrive at Church. If you feel that you might be called to this ministry please call Yolanda
Ortiz, her information is in the bulletin.
Thank you and God Bless.
GREGORIAN CHANT
Starting on the weekend of June 11 & 12 we will have a contemplative period of time for prayer and music in the form of Gregorian
Chant prior to each mass during the weekend. We will resume mass catechesis on a seasonal basis. This will afford each of us a
quiet, prayerful time before each mass to prepare us to receive the Lord.
Gregorian chant takes it name from Pope St. Gregory the Great who served as the great link between the early Church and the
Middle Ages. As such, he symbolizes the chant of the churches in Rome, which spread to England and to Gaul in the seventh and
eighth centuries.
With the motivation of Charlemagne (768-814) and his Carolingian renaissance, musicians created new and more elaborate chants.
The early development is difficult to trace because all the music was handed on as an oral tradition; nothing was written down even
though the repertoire for the Mass and the Divine Office comprised well over 2,000 pieces.
Types of Chant
This music can be divided into three types, marked by the degree of difficulty. Simple chants allowed the whole congregation to
participate, and some could easily reach back before Gregory, perhaps even to the music of the synagogue.
More complex are the antiphons for the liturgy of the hours and still, they are not too difficult for a monastic community with
members of varying skills.
Finally, solo cantors or small groups of trained musicians would sing the complex or chants for the propers of the Mass. These
complex chants are built of structural notes that are linked by an elaborate interlacing of notes, not unlike the Celtic knots found in
the art of the Book of Kells. The effect is a kind of medieval jazz. We are happy to present the first type, the simple chants which
hopefully will inspire you and give you the precious few minutes before mass to encounter the Lord.
GREGORIAN CHANT
Master of Ceremonies Ministry
The MC is responsible for the proper conduct and
flow of the liturgy, ensuring that each minister is
where he or she needs to be, and that each element
of the liturgy happens smoothly and without
distracting or disruptive pauses or confusions. As an
MC you will become familiar with all the details and
rubrics of the Mass and the full range of rites and
celebrations. To be an MC, you should be well
organized and have the ability to work with other liturgical ministers before, during,
and after the liturgy. As an MC you have a deep faith in Jesus Christ, a love for the
Mass and the Eucharist. If you feel that you might be called to this ministry,
please call
Bob Applegate at 951-375-9442.
Thank you and God Bless

On Sunday, June 5th Fr. Dao gave
a special blessing to Alex Rodarte’s Seminarian Intern Advisory
Committee members during the
12:00 p.m. mass. Alex arrived to
St. Catherine of Alexandria last
August, 2015 and he has been
here helping to serve our
community for the past 10
months. The week of June 6th, Alex will return to St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, CA to finish his
remaining studies. God willing he will be ordained to Deacon in December, 2016.
During his Pastoral Internship, emphasis is placed on ministry of the word, sacrament, and service among the
man people and cultures found in the parochial setting. The Pastor selects a board of six members drawn from
the parish. They are to be chosen for their familiarity with parish ministry, for their commitment to the Church
and its ministers, and for their practical wisdom and ability to share it. The Intern Advisory Board meets once
a month with the Seminarian to support his desire to become a better minister and routinely
provide feedback.

The Bereavement Ministry seeks to support our brothers and
sisters during their time of loss. Death and its accompanying grief
is a process of highs and lows. Through prayer and the presence of
Christ, who fortifies us with his strength and love, we endeavor to
be a source of comfort. You are invited to join this ministry. For

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Last week’s “Treasure” no doubt raised an eyebrow or two
with the image of the deacons scurrying through the streets
of Rome, or perhaps galloping on horseback, with fragments
of eucharistic bread from the bishop’s liturgy. These would
be dropped into the chalice at outlying celebrations, presided
over by presbyters, to express unity with the bishop, and perhaps also to remind the presbyters that they were not free
agents. The Council of Laodicea forbade the custom of the
fermentum in the year 348. Generally, one of the rules of interpreting law is that people don’t make laws about things
that aren’t happening. So, by mid-fourth century, we have an
important clue that what had once been a Roman custom had
become widespread.
Interestingly, when the Church of England (and its related bodies) went through a liturgical renewal in the midnineteenth century, they reclaimed this custom from the
mists of history. Today, it is the custom in some Anglican
dioceses for a fragment of the host from the bishop’s Holy
Week liturgy (what we call the Chrism Mass) to be carried to
every parish. On “Maundy Thursday” (our Holy Thursday),
the fragment is dropped into the chalice to signify the
parish’s communion with the bishop. This modern revival of
the fermentum is different from the “co-mingling” action we
are used to, in which a fragment of the consecrated bread is
dropped into the chalice just before Communion.
