“Did you know”
Our gardening team; Gretchen Lathrop, Sandy
Turner and Chuck Lewis, as well as Bob Lathrop
and Al Turner who usually jumps in when the task is
physically demanding, took on a new role when
200+ trees were planted in the fall. All of these
trees must be watered when mother nature fails us.
You can guess who is doing that watering. Their
commitment to St James is something special.
Thank you

From the Pastor’s Pen
Mass Intentions
And so, did he see his shadow? Yes, Groundhog
Day 2015 and Punxsutawney Phil sees shadow and
predicts six more weeks of winter. Oh yippie! Here we go!
Predicting the weather has become part science and
part just luck. On the farm we had a “Donkey-meter” for
predicting the weather. It was a donkey painted on a
shingle. For a tail, it had a small piece of rope. Painted
on the wood were the words, “Tail dry normal, tail moving
windy, tail wet rain, tail gone, CYCLONE, kiss it goodbye…” Sometimes we would laugh and say that the
donkey did a better job than the guy or gal on TV. On the
farm, our livelihood depended upon the weather. A too
dry year or a too wet year could make or break us. But
one thing I remembered from the farm is that when the
first of November rolled around, we prepared for winter.
We would prepare for a long cold winter and wait to see
what would happen. There were times when we played
loaves and fishes with the livestock feed and hoped we
could stretch it as long as needed.
It’s still wintertime; we still have a few more weeks
before spring. I’m sure there are many who are ready for
spring, no more snow, and some warmer weather. And
then we hear the call for more snow. Part of me is excited
to hear that news, and part of me dreads it, for I love to
sit and watch the snowfall. To wake up this past Sunday
morning and see everything christened white, it was
picture perfect and beautiful.
Lent is just around the corner. It is a time that will call
us to once again reflect where we are in life. We know
Lent. We know what to do to prepare. Will we get ready
by giving up the same things again or making the same
promises again? Will this year’s Lent be a true change in
our lives?
As I look ahead to the next few weeks, I will be
traveling for various community and Vocation events. I
look forward to my interactions with others and sharing
our story of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. It will
be a time to engage others in retreats as we enter into
the season of Lent. And trust me, I will be watching the
weather app on my phone very close. Now, what kind of
an app can I find to keep me on my Lenten path?

Feb 18 -- Ash Wednesday
We asked you to step up to the plate and be a part
of our team and you brought your “A” game! At our
January blood drive, you pitched in to help local
patients by donating 117 units of precious blood!
Our starting lineup included 123 top-notch players
who registered to save lives. Rounding out the team
were awesome volunteers who helped us get gameday ready, provide support to the players, and tidy
up the field when the game was over. To everyone
involved, we tip our hats to you! We also want to
thank Community Blood Center staff for their hard
work, and the Kansas City Royals for providing two
tickets to each donor for an April game. Please join
us at our next home game on Tuesday, March 31st
in the social hall and be sure to register for your
appointment online at www.savealifenow.org.
Encourage someone to join you and with your help,
we are sure to hit another home run.

We might be familiar with different aspects of the
Catholic faith. But how does it all fit together? And
what difference does it make for our lives?
Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained opens up
the “big picture” of the Catholic faith in a way that
helps us know it, live it and articulate it to others.
Through beautifully crafted teaching and state-of-theart video, author, speaker and theologian Dr. Edward
Sri leads a team of dynamic teachers who provide a
clear and comprehensive explanation of the Catholic
faith. Part I focuses on Knowing the Faith journeys
through the core teachings of the Catholic Church
and Part II, Living the Faith, focuses on our encounter with God in the sacraments and moral life.

There have been a few times in my life where I felt so
broken, and alone I wasn’t sure I could ever feel Joy.
I experienced the Love of God, through the
tenderness of family and friends. I knew there was
Hope, because I believed in Jesus. As time passed I
also felt inner Peace, that helped me to see His Light
in my life once again. I must confess, however, that
Joy was in short supply. Even though I understood
the concept of an inner joy which comes from my
relationship with God, and I knew this was not the
same as happiness, I was at a loss as to how to regain
His Joy. I kept searching, and asking God to help me,
but Joy remained outside my grasp. I realized how
this loss was effecting my day to day living and
relationships. When I looked in the mirror I saw great
sadness and sorrow. It was an effort to get out of bed
in the morning, and to find anything meaningful to
occupy my thoughts and actions for the day. Then Fr.
Mike asked me to revisit the possibility of beginning a
Caring ministry. I must admit I thought I was the last
person to facilitate such a group, but I said Yes. I
begin researching, reading, and organizing, which is
always how I face a new challenge. What was born
was the Ministry for Healing-Sharing Our Losses:
A Journey of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.
I want to share this quote. It comes from a book, The
Rosary, by Florence L. Barclay, published in 1910:
”Enable with perpetual light,
The dullness of our blinded sight:
Anoint and cheer our soiled face
With the abundance of Thy grace.
Keep far our foes; give peace at home;
Where Thou art Guide, no ill can come.”
As I read these word I was reminded of the petitions
found in the Our Father: “Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.” As we allow Your light, Oh
Lord, to enter our lives; if we allow You to lead us, fill
us with inner peace, we will find the elusive Joy. It is
my prayer, for any of you facing a life changing event,
that the five weekly sessions of our Caring Ministry will
help you surrender your pain to Jesus, and begin
feeling His Hope, Peace, Love, and yes especially His
Joy.

Thank You! Thank you!
The concert was wonderful!
Please allow me a
moment to thank you all
for your support of our
concert -- The Music & Me
-- last week in support of
our professional development trip to the LA
Religious Education
Congress in March. The concert raised enough
that the expenses for the trip are almost completely
covered. I know that I speak for Danny, Bobbi &
Lori as well when I say that we were so touched by
your show of support! We are very grateful for the
opportunity offered to us, and we look forward to
learning some exciting and new things to share
when we get back.
February's Corporal Work of Mercy
Visit the Sick
Our Corporal Work for February is Visit the
Sick. We will be making both Valentines and Get
Well cards with our students. The
Valentines will go to Our Lady of Mercy and area
nursing homes, the Get Well cards will go with our
Hospital Ministers as they make their rounds at
the hospitals. Our parish will also be having a
communal anointing of the Sick on the weekend
of February 21/22 at all the weekend Masses.
Anyone suffering from an illness of any kind is
welcome to come up and receive the
sacrament. (Some people have the erroneous
belief that this sacrament is reserved for the dying
--it is not.)
We will be talking with our students about how
they can help care for those who are ill--our
stories will be: Now One Foot, Now The Other,
Get Well Soon, Grandpa, A Sick Day for Amos
McGee and Somebody Loves You Mr.
Hatch. These are all great stories that have to do
with reaching out and caring for others and a
great jumping off point to talk about empathy with
your child. We also will show a short video called
"Peach's Neet Feet" about a young woman who
paints shoes for chronically ill children.

appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you
were pleased to make it a privileged
sanctuary, whence you dispense your favors, and already
many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities,
both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with the
most unbounded confidence, to implore your maternal
intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of my
requests. I will endeavor to imitate your virtues, that I may
one day share your glory, and bless you in eternity.
Amen.

5
GREAT REASONS to Patronize the
Merchants in Our Church Bulletin!
1. They support the work of our church.
2. It keeps money in our community. For every $100 spent at a
locally owned business, $68 goes back into the community
and your tax base. For every $100 spent at a chain store,
only $43 comes back. Online purchases bring nothing
back to our local community.
3. Keeps our community unique. Where we shop, where
we eat and have fun—all of it makes our community
home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part
of the distinctive character of our community.
4. Creates more good jobs. Small local
businesses are the largest employer
nationally and in our community.
5. Get better service. Local businesses
often hire people with a better
understanding of the products
they are selling and take more time
to get to know customers.
