聯合書院語文改善計劃 United College Language Improvement Project Leadership in English (SPE01) Self- presentation in English for social, professional and organizational contexts (SPE02) Objectives Objectives: ※ Give students increased confidence in using English well in a wide variety of common organizational situations ※ Have clear ideas about appropriate styles needed when interacting with different cultural groups and different types of people, using their E.Q. (Emotional Intelligence). This course aims to (1) provide students with the opportunity to improve their self-presentation skills in English, and to build their personal portfolio materials for use in gaining employment, academic exchange and post-graduate opportunities; (2) help students become more self-aware, through reflecting on their personal characteristics, their life experience and their educational backgrounds, expanding these to reach international expectation. Content 2015 年春季課程 Spring Programmes 2015 Registration period 報名日期 5-16.01.2015 www.cuhk.edu.hk/uc/UC_LIP This course provides students with a base for lifelong independent learning in leadership skills. It gives students the opportunity to develop their personal growth and leadership potential through the interpersonal skills training activities in each class. Activities like role plays are designed to simulate problems and situations students encounter in real life, and local examples are used as much as possible to keep the learning more relevant and ready for immediate use both on campus and off campus, and in international settings. * Students will need to have quite a good command of English to participate comfortably in this course (Level 4 or above in HKDSE / Grade C or above in HKALE / Level 5 or above in IB / 80 or above in Tariff or equivalent level) Teaching focus Using personalised, interactive workshop formats and assessment, the course focuses on providing them with the materials, confidence and skills to explain and articulate their potential in real life settings. Period : 27.01 - 31.03.15 (except 17&24.02) Day & Time: Tuesday, 6:30pm—8:30pm No. of Hours: 16 hours (8 days) Period : 26.01 - 30.03.15 (except 16&23.02) Day & Time: Monday, 6:30pm—8:30pm No. of Hours: 16 hours (8 days) United College Toastmasters Club Toastmasters training can help students to give better presentations in English, to develop the public speaking skills and ability, to effectively develop and present ideas, to offer constructive criticism and to accept criticism more objectively. The College will sponsor 50% or 30% of the club membership fee as an incentive for students who have attended more than 90% or 70% of meetings respectively. The 1st club meeting for second term 2014-2015 is scheduled for 15 January 2015 (Thursday) at 6:45 pm at Si Yuan Amenities Centre, United College. The following regular meetings will be held at Room 312, Tsang Shiu Tim Building on alternate Thursdays. You are most welcome to come and have a try on the toastmastering experience. Specifically, the course is designed to help students in the following areas: ※ To speak with confidence, with substance, with conviction and with clearly defined goal(s); ※ To speak in a style appropriate to the occasion and with suitable gestures and body language; ※ To develop a sense of timing and the appropriate use of pitch and voice qualities; ※ To practise public talks and presentations to targeted audiences. * Students will need to have quite a good command of English to participate comfortably in this course (Level 4 or above in HKDSE / Grade C or above in HKALE / Level 5 or above in IB / 80 or above in Tariff or equivalent level) Remark: An off-campus visit to Toastmaster Club Meeting will be scheduled during the class. Details will be announced in the first lesson. Period : 28.01 - 01.04.15 (except 18&25.02) Day & Time: Wednesday, 6:30pm—9:00pm No. of Hours: 16 hours (8 days) Workshop on Cross Cultural Understanding (SPE04) It is becoming more important to be able to communicate successfully across cultures in life on campus as well as when going abroad. This course will help you learn how to: ※ Develop the skills to communicate effectively internationally; ※ Develop your confidence to meet students from other cultures; ※ Learn how to understand the differences between their culture and your own culture better; ※ Help you project the right image and generate respect and trust with people of other cultures. *Students will need to have quite a good command of English to participate comfortably in this workshop (Level 4 or above in HKDSE / Grade C or above in HKALE / Level 5 or above in IB / 80 or above in Tariff or equivalent level) Period : 05.03 - 26.03.15 Day & Time: Wednesday, 6:30pm—9:00pm No. of Hours: 10 hours (4 days) General Information The United College Language Improvement Project (LIP) courses are open to all students of the United College, CUHK. This pamphlet describes the nature and content of each of the courses on offer from September to November 2014. If you have any queries, please contact the College Dean of Students’ Office for further information (Tel: 3943 7575). Application Procedures If you wish to join any of the courses, fill in the application form obtainable from the United College website (https:// cloud.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk/webform/view.php?id=19531&mf_page=1). Please note that enrolment is done on a first-come-first-served basis. To secure your place, you need to pay a deposit of $300 for each course. Applicants should pay the deposit via HSBC or Hang Seng Bank ATM machines to :The Chinese University of Hong Kong Hang Seng Bank 293-005005-001 A hard copy of confirmation slip for application and the ATM Payment Advice should be handed in for proper registration. Students are not advised to pay the deposit at Hang Seng Bank branches using counter service, as a service charge of $40 will be incurred and borne by students. The deposit will be refunded in full and a Certificate of Attendance will be issued upon completion of a course with no less than 80% attendance, except stated otherwise. Please ensure that the name you use on the application form is the same as the one in your bank passbook; otherwise you might have difficulty receiving a refund, if applicable, on completion of the course. The application period for the 2015 Spring Programme is 5 – 16 January 2015. Result Announcement Lists of successful applicants will be posted in the Dean of Students’ Office during 12:00 noon on 21 January 2015 and 12:00 noon on 23 January 2015. You are required to check the result of your application in person at Room 201 of the Dean of Students’ Office, and to sign and confirm your enrolment. Language Immersion Camps Class withdrawal, swap or cancellation Withdrawal from classes Before the start of a course for which you have registered, if for any reason(s) you cannot attend it, you should notify, at your earliest convenience, the Dean of Students’ Office at Room 223, Tsang Shiu Tim Building in writing or by phone (3943 7575), so that your place can be offered in time to other applicants. If you have to withdraw from class before the second session has started, you should notify, and seek approval from, the Dean of Students’ Office in writing. A 50% of the deposit will be deducted. Withdrawal without formal notification and approval will result in the full deposit being confiscated. Swapping classes Changing classes is normally not allowed. If for “good” reason(s) you have to do so, you should apply to the Dean of Students’ Office in writing, stating the reason(s) for doing so. Changing classes without formal approval will be deemed withdrawal from a course without formal notification. To help students to gain greater confidence in learning and using English / Putonghua To provide a proper ‘communicative’ environment for English/Putonghua To expose course members to a good range of enjoyable activities aiming to develop and enhance their oral English/Putonghua proficiency and fluency Applications first-come-first-served $350 deposit refundable for participants after satisfactory completion of three-day activities and a report. practising *Exact Camp Date – to be confirmed in due course Cancellation of classes The normal enrolment for the courses is about 15-20 per class. A course may not be offered if the enrolment number is below 15 before the commencement of a course, subject to the review of the LIP Committee. If the enrolment number comes down to 9 after a course has started, the course may be cancelled, subject to the review of the LIP Committee. The LIP Committee reserves the right to (1) cancel classes with good reason(s) and (2) make alterations regarding instructors, class locations, class schedules and the course content if necessary. Non-local Language and Culture Programmes We are tentatively planning some non-local language and study programmes to be held during the 2015 Summer Holiday. The programmes will be open to application in January 2015. Students with attensdance rate of 80% or above from other UC LIP courses will be offered additional scores for applying the following GOAL Programme* : ※ Culture and English Language Programme at Hertford College, University of Oxford, United Kingdom ※ Language Improvement Project — Non-local Culture and English Language Programme at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom *Globe-Oriented Active Learning Programme 2014/15 Studying Abroad Award Scheme The LIP is planning to arrange some non-local / overseas study programmes in cooperation with some renowned universities in the world. Students who have outstanding performance in the LIP courses and receive recommendations from their course instructors will be favourably considered for this Studying Abroad Award. The primary objective of this programme is to provide students in need of input and interaction with a short immersion to practise using English / Putonghua in an authentic context. This programme will be jointly organised by the LIP and the College GOAL Programme* in collaboration with some renowned Universities in the world. The content of the programme will cover: - Structured language classes offered by the receiving university - Intensive immersion between CUHK students and (i) student representatives of the host university or (ii) individual host families - Visits to some cultural and historical places *Globe-Oriented Active Learning Programme
