Hope this Newsletter finds everyone warm and cozy and enjoying our gorgeous weather. With
this time of year, along with cooling weather, we are all getting into the holiday
spirit. Thanksgiving brings family and friends together to be thankful for their blessings and of
course feast on all the traditional fixins. The holiday season then kicks in full blast. I know
everyone will have the best holiday ever. I hope to see everyone at our Holiday Party, 5 December, at Tropical Acres. Let's all get in the holiday spirit together!!!! Don't forget a donation of dog or cat food, toy or something for our furry friends. All donations will be given to the Broward Animal Shelter. Animals need love too! Thank you in advance.
This has been a good year. We have had some fun events and parties, such as the Fleet Review, Commander's
a Ball and Awards Dinner, Sebastian, Punta Gorda and certainly all of our monthly Meeting/Dinners. Thank
you to all who volunteered for the Dania Flea Market, Boat Shows, calling committees and everyone who attended our meetings and contributed to the continuing success of our Squadron. It says a lot about our Squadron when 27 people have received Merit Marks for 2014. I would like to personally thank everyone who assisted me during my year as Commander. I wish you all a wonderful Holiday and very Happy New Year.
Sincerely, Cdr. Donna S McDonough, P

CRSPS 2014 Course Schedule
The year of 2014 has been a successful year for the Coral Ridge Squadron,
and the Education Department.
We've held three ABC classes this year on 2/15, 4/12, and 5/17. Out of a total of 19 students
we had 17 students that passed, and three new members in the Squadron. We also held a
Weather Seminar on 3/4 with an attendance of 3 students.
BTW, the ABC class has had a significant increase from 7 students in the previous year
(2013) to 19 students this year.
We also have scheduled the next ABC class on 12/13 and the request of two students and if
we have the minimum of 4 students we will deliver the class at Cardinal Gibbons High
School at our usual time from 8-5 pm.

Prop strike
Take precautions to avoid deadly accidents
Boating accidents involving prop strikes are not uncommon. If
you are struck by a boat’s propeller and survive, you will likely
be horrifically mangled at the least.
Prop strike accidents often happen to passengers who fall overboard after sitting on the
transom or gunwales while a boat is underway. If the boat lurches suddenly, a passenger is
gone before the captain can react and cut the engines. A prop strike accident can also occur
when a boat operator does not see a person in the water swimming, diving or clamming.
Water sports such as skiing, tubing or wakeboarding put people in the water directly behind
the boat’s prop. The smallest lapse of attention can result in tragedy. Many of these accidents result from inexperience, negligence or intoxication, and most can be prevented by
following a few simple safety practices:
 Turn your engines off when passengers are boarding or disembarking.
 Make sure all passengers stay properly seated while underway. Never ride on a transom, seat back, gunwale or the bow.
 Assign a responsible adult to watch children in the boat.
 When towing a water-skier, tuber or wakeboarder, assign a spotter and use hand signals
for communication.
 In congested areas, be alert for swimmers or divers. Learn to recognize warning markers and diver down flags indicating people in the water.
 The helmsman should use a lanyard attached to the engine kill switch. This is especially important when you are boating alone.
Get first-aid training so you know how to help if someone gets severely injured by a prop
strike or other life-threatening accident while underway. You can learn more about how to
avoid propeller injuries here. –Bob Russell
