Come Celebrate NUCA’s 50th Anniversary
Past. Present. Future.
Dear Industry Colleague:
I would like to invite all of my fellow utility and excavation contractors and associate members to attend NUCA’s
50th anniversary convention. I can assure you that this year’s event will not only be informational and fun, it will
also be memorable. Those of us who survived the recent recession are slowly but surely seeing work pick up.
And this year’s convention was put together to provide the information and tools for companies to examine their
operations, learn ways to reduce costs, increase productivity, improve profits, and bring some innovative thinking
into your company.
I believe one of the best things about our conventions is interacting with contractors from all over the country
to discuss issues I am facing in my company and hear how other contractors resolved these issues. I also enjoy
sharing helpful information with other contractors. Attendees will have many chances to interact—happy hours,
informal dinners, roundtable discussions, social events, and just sitting around waiting for the next event
to begin. There are a lot of other conventions out there, but the NUCA convention is unique because nearly all
attendees are company owners or management—the people that have to confront company problems and make
the tough decisions. I can’t put a value on having access to hundreds of other company owners under one roof.
One of the most exciting things about this convention is our celebration of NUCA’s 50th anniversary. Associations
come and go, but the fact that NUCA has survived 50 years—despite facing many periods of economic diversity—
says something about the kind of organization NUCA is and the constitution and commitment of its membership.
And that is something that we can all be proud of. I encourage all of you to come to warm, sunny Florida and
enjoy the educational opportunities, camaraderie, and great social events.

Apollo 13 Captain Jim Lovell | A Successful Failure
Two hundred thousand miles from Earth, trapped in a tiny computerized
spacecraft, Captain Jim Lovell and his Apollo 13 crew faced almost certain
death when their oxygen system failed. Lovell takes his audiences to the
moon, brings them into the tension-filled cockpit of the Apollo 13 mission,
and gives them an exciting look at the possibilities of the twenty-first
century. He will share his inspirational story as a testament to the essential elements of heroism: a courageous spirit, quick and well-reasoned thinking, meticulous
attention to every detail, and the spirit of teamwork that guided him and his crew safely back
to Earth. Lovell applies the “time when we did bold things in space to achieve leadership” to
the goals and ambitions of any organization, proving that even during challenging times,
innovation and new heights of leadership can be attained.
Profit Pipeline Executive Roundtables
Our Rountable sessions are open only to contractors. Contractors are encouraged to sit with
non-competing contractors or those from other parts of the country to discuss problems, ask
questions, give advice, or simply brainstorm on issues affecting their companies. Regardless
of the company’s size and location, all contractors face the same operational concerns and,
as company owners, have to address problems and make tough decisions.
Economic Forecast with Anika Kahn
Always a convention favorite, Anika Kahn, Senior Economist
with Wells Fargo, will present her economic perspective on
how the economy is faring and what our industry can expect
in the coming months and year. Kahn has more than 15 years
of experience in corporate investment banking. Based in
Charlotte, NC, she is responsible for producing commentary
on U.S. residential real-estate markets, and she contributes
to the company’s Weekly Economic and Financial Commentary. Anika’s commentary is frequently cited by publications such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Bloomberg
News, and USA Today.
50th Anniversary Celebration
We have lots of special plans for the final event of the
convention. Denim and Diamonds will be our theme
and entertainment will be provided by Cooper Piano
Dueling Piano Show. Cooper’s wild, zany show is known
for audience involvement, sing-alongs, personal toasts,
and just plain fun for all ages. Members will also be treated to a walk down memory lane with a slide show from
the last 50 years. Each attendee will also receive a commemorative 50th Anniversary Program. This is an evening
you won’t want to miss!
Building Our Own Miniature Golf Course
A Fun-Filled Charity Event
This year’s team building event, building a miniature
golf course, will be a great ice-breaker to start our
convention. Attendees will split into groups of 6-8, and
be challenged to design and create fun, one-of-a-kind
mini golf holes. The Green “carpeting” and other essential materials will be provided. Canned and boxed goods will be provided to create bumpers,
turns, and special obstacle challenges. Once the final course has been constructed, representatives from each team will play and score the course. At the conclusion of the event, NUCA
will collect the non-perishable food items that teams used to build their holes, package them
up, and donate them to a local food bank or local shelter.

As we start the New Year with a new board of directors and a new executive board,
I am happy to report that Theresa Mannix continues as our Executive Director.
Thanks to all for agreeing to serve in order to improve our industry. In addition to
our new board, we also have a new office. At the beginning of this year we moved
offices to keep SUCA on track towards remaining fiscally responsible. There has
been much belt-tightening over the last several years, and it looks as though all the
efforts previously made are paying off. SUCA’s future mirrors that of our members—what once looked bleak is now much brighter. I encourage all our members
to remain active, involved and to work towards increasing the strength of this association as our local industry grows.
Despite all that is new, SUCA will be facing many of the same issues and agendas
that we have previously. We will remain focused on the local issues, such as the
City of St. Petersburg’s hiring agenda and retainage in Hillsborough County, while
ensuring that local legislators are aware of our presence, our agendas, and our collective strength as active political constituents. In addition to our local political involvement, we will also be visiting state and national legislators to support and
strengthen the larger agendas affecting us all. Should you encounter any issues
with local municipalities, specifications, etc., I ask that you bring these issues to my
attention so that SUCA can pursue whatever recourse may be available.
I hope that the recovery we have all experienced recently will allow us to make an
old idea new again—SUCA members doing business with SUCA members.
During the recession it was necessary to do anything and everything possible in order to remain in business, let alone remain profitable. For those of us that survived
the recession, things are getting better, and my goal is that we use this to our advantage. I ask that if you have a choice, please choose to use SUCA members for
subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, professional services and so on. By doing so
you will be supporting another company that is also working towards bettering our
industry. If there is a company with whom you enjoy doing business that is not a
SUCA member, please ask them to join. Choosing to do business with companies
inside our association is just one more way that
we can all work towards reaching our goals and
supporting SUCA.
I look forward to the year ahead, I welcome the
opportunity to lead SUCA, and I thank all those
that have entrusted me with the leadership of this
great association.

months ago we have determined the areas of greatest
need: Confined Space,
Trenching & Excavation, and
CPR/First Aid. All three of
these classes have now
been scheduled.
Also, we are in the final stages of creating our first ever
OSHA Alliance. After numerous revisions and compromises, both SUCA and
OSHA are happy with the
wording. This alliance with
OSHA will give our members valuable insight into
new OSHA regulations and
allow us to assist OSHA
with new solutions/
regulations. SUCA &
OSHA will both provide and
receive input from a different perspective to ensure
all our workers stay safe
while allowing us, as contractors, to be as efficient
and profitable as possible.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I grew up here in Tampa and outside of four and a half years in
Gainesville (the fifth football season
was with sheer determination that
Zook could turn things around) and
a couple in Ft. Myers, I’ve lived here
all my life. When we’re not working,
my wife and I enjoy traveling and
spending time with our two dogs.
What was your first job?
At 16, I started working at a Butcher
shop a couple miles from my house.
The majority of my duties revolved
around cleaning, but from time to
time, I was able help customers
and, while the prime cuts were trusted to more experienced staff, I
learned how to cut some of the less
expensive meat. To this day, I can
still debone an entire chicken and
leave it in one piece. I learned three
things from that experience. First
and foremost, the meat saw is not a
toy. Secondly, one can save a significant amount of money by buying
whole cuts. But probably the most
important aspect was a deep respect for those who earned a living
with their hands and the value of a
hard day’s work.
What keeps you in Utility
Contracting?
It’s the people. I’ve worked on
both the municipal and engineering side of utility construction and it’s just not the same.
I’m lucky to work with some of
the best people in the industry.
They’re not just good at what
they do, they’re good people.
What excites you about the
future of this industry?
As we rebound from a tumultuous economic period, most
indicators are looking up.
There is an influx of local development and backlogs are
increasing across the board.
The foreseeable future shows
substantial promise.
What worries you?
Our political climate. There is
a negative, problem focused,
atmosphere that seems to
have permeated our system.
SUCA, NUCA of Florida, and
NUCA National provide an outstanding educational vehicle
and platform to make your
voice heard in Washington,
Tallahassee, and here at
home. Our organization provides a fantastic opportunity
to meet face to face with legislators and make your voice
heard.
Now that you’ve completed
your term as SUCA chair,
what are you going to do
with all that free time?
It’s definitely been a busy
couple of years, but I would
not have traded it for anything. I’ll always cherish the
experiences I’ve had, the
challenges we’ve overcome,
and the relationships I’ve
made. Going forward, I look
to further utilize my engineering license by expanding Dallas 1’s in house design-build
capabilities and by offering
freelance construction engineering services. I’ve recently started Construction Service Engineering, LLC to provide engineered MOT, Dewatering, HDD, and SWPPP
plans to contractors throughout the state.
